I have no idea about cockpit audio, but I was 8 and saw it live as well. We all watched it in class together during school, (first teacher in space) then had a big assembly later that day due to the disaster and all that.

Well, you know, Reza Aslan had that Believer episode about Santa Muerte the Sunday before last. Plus a lot of my family live in Mexico, so it's kinda relevant to me.

Catholics don't like Santa Muerte. The official Church position is that it's a religion for gangsters and other criminals, but, like, most of the gangsters I've seen have been wearing cross necklaces, so the Vatican might be projecting a bit there. Santa Muerte is a saint for people who feel alienated by the more mainstream Catholic religion (and I know I do), so on some level, Catholics may resent the fact that the Santa Muerte cult highlights what is ugly about their own faith.
