Lived my whole life in the orange.

If you're a naturefag, go to Yosemite and Grand Sequoia in the central eastern part hugging Nevada. Camp for a few days and hike around.

If you like popculture and urban stuff, obviously LA and SF. Sacramento is cool for a day trip because of the old western theme. Also San Diego has some cool shit like an aircraft carrier and a good zoo. Plus you can go 45 minutes south and check out the shit hole that is Tijuana and the border.

Northern California (past SF) is Oregon-Lite and kind of redneck iirc. Lots of trees and flat land.

I'd recommend coming to the Central Coast (orange) if you want to experience the beach scene or whatever. Santa Barbara and Pismo have good beaches with large college populations (college girls + the beach is always good) plus there's a small nude beach by Pismo :^). This area is called wine country as well, so if you're 21+ and into that, there ya go.

Enjoy
>>
>>1119839
That's nice, the college I'm going to is in Orange County. How much would it cost to get to Yosemite from there? Also, how much money should I bring and are domestic flights the best way to get around even within state boundaries?
>>
>>1119898
Since I'm right in the middle of the coast, I tend to just drive wherever. However, since you're so far south it'd probably take 8-10 hours to drive to Yosemite. Really anything travel over 7 hours to drive is best just flown. But it really depends on your preferences (if your time is limited, fly. If not, drive. But the San Joaquin valley is boring af so be prepared). You'll be next to LAX and I can't imagine tickets for intrastate travel being over $200.

Also, if you make any friends, a road trip up the coast from LA-SF would probably be a good way to see a lot of the state, though i've never done this.

Hello /trv/
I plan on visiting Montreal, Canada next weekend and I have a few questions:

1. Do locals mind speaking English? or do they treat it the same way people in France treat English speakers?
I know enough French to order food and make small talk, but eventually I would exhaust my vocabulary.

2. What are must-see attractions /trv/ recommends?

3. What are important norms to keep in mind? (e.g. talking on public transport, general manners etc.)

Any other suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you!

>Hello /trv/
Bonjour!

>1. Do locals mind speaking English? or do they treat it the same way people in France treat English speakers?

In Montreal, you will experience no language barriers unless you are way out in the suburbs. Outside of Montreal, it's expected that you make some sort of effort to speak French, in smaller towns you will be stonewalled if your French isn't fluent. So as long as you stay in town, you'll be alright.

>2. What are must-see attractions /trv/ recommends?

Foufones electrique. Tam-tam. Any strip club.

>3. What are important norms to keep in mind? (e.g. talking on public transport, general manners etc.)

Always tip 15%, 20% if the service is good. You can't smoke indoors. Don't talk bad about the church, people are very Catholic. Walk left, stand right on the escalators. They love a little ass kissing about their culture. Pretend you give a shit about hockey.

People are pretty carefree tee bee aich, really anything goes and you have to be deliberately offensive to piss anyone off.

I speak French so I've never experienced 'rude' Quebeckers until I went out with my Anglo friends. It's true sometimes you'll be treated differently. Not so much rude but maybe just... not friendly.

If you're from the states you're fine. It's the Ontarians they dislike. Hard to tell the difference.

My dad and I planned a trip for a couple days in Quebec and spent 14 hours driving up there. We stop at a restaurant 2 hours from the border to eat lunch and his passport is stolen.

I take it I can't shmooze Canadian border patrol? I have my passport and my birth certificate with his name on it and we both have licenses but I didn't wanna waste our time if it's 100% futile.

My specialty is amusement parks, so here are my tips for Tokyo on that topic:

Tokyo Disney Resort: per hardcore theme park fans who travel the world just to ride rides (yes, these freaks of nature exist), the two theme parks in Tokyo Disney are the Holy Grail of theme parks.

Tokyo Dome City: baseball stadium complex flanked by amusement zones. One of them has Thunder Dolphin, the biggest roller coaster in the Tokyo area, which rides along and dips over the tops of skyscrapers.

Sega Joypolis: giant arcade with one ride that is part arcade game, part looping roller coaster (an actual roller coaster, not a simulation).

Hanayashiki: oldest amusement park in Japan (dates back to being a flower garden in the mid-1800s). It also has the oldest roller coaster in the country, which dates back to the 1950s. It's a very small park, though, so don't plan your whole day around it.

There are a couple of other decent parks in and around Tokyo, but these are the most notable ones.

I'm thinking about visiting several places in the UK next month, and I was wondering how many days it would be worth to stay in the places I had in mind. I was thinking of going to London for a few days (which I've been to twice already), then seeing Oxford and/or Cambridge, Bath, Bristol (maybe), Manchester and/or York, and then Edinburgh. I imagine Oxford and Cambridge can be hit in a single day, but what about the others? Should I add some other places that might be better? I wouldn't mind going somewhere with some great nature like the Lakes District, either. Currently living in Paris right now.

>>1119133
Edinburgh requires at least two days, though most of the rest can be done in a day or even half a day. It really depends what kind of pace you want togo, if you want to take a few extra days to just relax in nice places then maybe stay an extra day in York and Bath

How are you travelling? Be aware that the trains are very expensive, and slow if you're going off the beaten track.
>>
>>1119139
Thanks for the advice. Everything you said sounds about right to me.

I haven't really decided yet, but I was thinking about taking the bus. I know it'll probably take quite a long time travelling from place to place, but I imagine it's quite a bit cheaper. Do you agree or should I try some other means of transportation?

Oh, and also -- if I had to choose between Oxford and Cambridge, which is more worth seeing?

Not really sure what's up with mine. It doesn't include MANY of the places I've visited. For example, I lived in Delhi and it doesn't show very many checkins, even though I had data and frequently used Google products. Literally no history for cities like Srinagar, Belgrade, Kolkata, Bangkok, et cetera.

Updated/Continuation of Thread

I currently live in Toronto, Canada as a fresh college graduate with my mother downtown and I am debating if I should start my career here or in San Jose, California.

>Money:

The career I am pursuing is a police officer. Cops in Toronto start off at 58k CAD which is 44k USD. Cops in San Jose start off at 84k USD which is 110k CAD.

If I were to join Toronto Police, I would have to stay 6 years to reach 110k CAD when San Jose starts at that salary (84k USD). If I were to stay 6 years in San Jose Police, I would be making 106k USD which is 140k CAD. It seems there is more money to be made in San Jose Police.

>Housing:

After researching, both housing markets are expensive without a doubt. Since I live in a condo in downtown Toronto, I know that the prices are ridiculous for the amount of little space you get. While in San Jose, yes the prices are expensive too but you get more space for your dollar. Plus it would be less expensive if you lived outside of the city in San Jose. I have a friend who is an Electrical Engineer and he wants to move to San Jose, so I might rent with him, keep costs low.

>Other Expenses:

The cost of living in San Jose is a little bit more expensive (27%) than Toronto. But you could argue that I am making more money in San Jose to be able to afford the high expenses. On top of that, you have to account that the Canadian dollar is 0.76 cents to the American Dollar.

>Other Reasons To Move:
Beautiful weather all year round, new experience, saving money, having independence and meet new people.

>Reasons Not To Move:
From what I heard, a lot of immigrants, ghetto areas, gang bangers, Spanish people, shit healthcare compared to Canada, gas prices and high car insurance.

>So it with worth moving for a possible better quality of life? Questions to me.

Things to think of.
If you are a police officer they may require you to live in the city you serve, the city I live in in us requires this, though there are ways around it.
Also Canada is much safer with less violence possibly why they make less money. Also have you thought about competition? I didn't think it was that easy to just get a police position in a large city, but if you are qualified then go for it. Also, the Bay Area/San Jose have many many towns and suburbs, Mayb keep checking the job postings/city websites of all of them as well.
>>
>>1118606
Thanks for your input. Yes, obviously Toronto is safer than San Jose. I chose San Jose because its one of the highest paying cities in California beside the other factors.
>>
>>1118609
And they're willing to pay more for another cop cause its probably a shitty area with too much violence and not enough ppl are applying

Hello guys, from past lack of money or friends I never traveled in my life, always delaying it for a better time. I live in Israel and it was always my dream to visit places like Venice, Rome, Prague, Amsterdam, Berlin and a couple others that don't currently come to mind. (yeah I know, entry level places, but its a start)
Suddenly one of my friends decided to get married and have the ceremony in two months in Bled, Slovenia. Now as beautiful and interesting this place seems, it's nowhere near my list of destinations. Plus the flight there is about 1.5x more expensive compared to one of the other cities I mentioned.
The idea of flying to Rome comes to mind, from there to Venice (or just flying straight to Venice) and from there somehow finding my way to Bled. (and probably after that going all the way back since from what I see two way tickets are cheaper than two separate)
Problem is I'm paranoid AF and don't know how to execute this trip.
How much in advance do I need to book the train/bus tickets to get there, since it's a long distance drive, or are most working on a pay-and-go basis. Do you know of any website that can provide reliable transport information in that region? How would you guys plan it?
I would like the trip to take around two weeks.
Thanks for the help.

Venice is one of those entry-level places and it's great. So yea, go there.

If you have a bit more time, check out tickets to Milano. Not much to see tehre but it's cheaper to fly into and you can see Verona on your way to Venice.

On the way to Bled also check out Triest and Koper - they are next to each other.

train and bus tickets - a few days in advance. WIth some cheap bus companies it's worth checking a few weeks in advance .

Also check blablacar for car sharing. It's very popular in Europe. Most rides appear just a few days in advance though

For planning ground transportation you can use
rome2rio.com

and relax, it's all easy
>>
Fist off, thank you so much for the reply, I'll check out the sites and the cities. Trieste and koper sound like a solid midway destination, but as for milano from what I see it doesn't matter as much if I fly there or Venice, will look more into it.
>>
>>1118143
As a first time traveler, a paranoid one at that, you should go ahead and book all the transport, if not all your accommodation. It'll help you to relax about it all hanging over you. Summer is THE time to be a tourist in these major cities as every school kid is out of school, so expect it to be hot and annoyingly hot with high prices and high occupancy and crowds. I wouldn't go to Rome or Venice in the summer (but you could).

Is price an issue or just going to hit off your biggest favorite dreams on the way? Slovenia might be most easily accessible by train from a 10day Prague-Vienna-Budapest trip idea. You might also like a cruise that dumps you in Split and book inland from there as well.

Hey /trv/. I made this thread on /pol/ yesterday and it went about how you would expect from pol.

You see, 2 years ago when I got my job I told myself i'd try to save $5000 to begin my dream of going to Japan. I picked up a second job in 2015 and worked relentlessly, about 40 hours a week. I didn't buy a car, walked home (i'm 90 minutes from work walk-wise) and cut my spending to just food and bus tickets.

Now, 2 years later, i'm finally at my $5000 personal goal. What a ride.

So, now I want to "begin" my journey. I'll soon quit my two jobs but I need to figure out where to go from here. How do I get to Japan work-wise?

As far as I know, these are my ONLY options:
*Join the navy/military and hope to get stationed in japan. If not, they'll pay for your 4 year bachelor's degree when you get out

*Move out of America and go somewhere else to get a bachelor's degree. A bachelor's degree is a requirement for Japan work visa's and the only workaround is marriage or 10 year work experience

*Get married to someone in Japan. This is the only workaround to the bachelor's degree requirement that I know about

*Get a student visa and acquire your student loan in Japan. What could possibly go wrong?

--

I can finally begin my life at $5000, I just need to know the most optimal route going forward..

Any experience, /trv/?

Don't quit your jobs until you've got another job lined up (or a place at a university for your bachelors).

Have you actually been to Japan yet? Why not travel there first and figure out if the country is the way you expected it to be.

>*Join the navy/military and hope to get stationed in japan. If not, they'll pay for your 4 year bachelor's degree when you get out
You could try this. Seems kinda like a waste of the past 2 years though. Maybe if you took a vacation there with the money then joined the military after you knew for sure you were making the right choice?

>*Move out of America and go somewhere else to get a bachelor's degree. A bachelor's degree is a requirement for Japan work visa's and the only workaround is marriage or 10 year work experience
Why not in America?

>*Get married to someone in Japan. This is the only workaround to the bachelor's degree requirement that I know about

>Why not travel there first

I was saving up for a 14 day trip.

However. Do you think I will go to japan for 14 days, spend $3000, come back, and say "Holy crap that was awesome and totally worth 2 years of suffering. Now let's do 2 more years of suffering to make our 5k back"

Probably not. I'll probably be exhausted, give up my dream, and buy a car and settle down. Right now, this might actually be a "once in a lifetime chance" to reach my dream for real. I have to double down on it while I can.

>>1117730
>Why not in America?

Let's see...a bachelor's degree in Germany costs $0. And a bachelor's degree in America costs $300,000 and enslaves you for the rest of your life.

Hmmmm. I think it's an easy choice. Go to the country with an actual affordable education.

I'd like some outside perspective because honestly the route looks like kind of a mess right now (to be fair this mapping program is shit) and also I have no idea what i'm doing. so, if this were your trip, what would you add/cut from it?

>>
>>1117291
- I'd spend less time in England on this trip, London'll be enough
- Paris is largely an Arab/Gipsy tourist trap these days, just saying. (I seriously thought I woke up in Kabul last time I got off the bus in Montmartre)
- Skip Luxembourgh, nothing to see there
- For the love of god skip Brussels, any Belgian will concur, have Antwerp as your base instead, and see Bruges and Ghent, and the coast from there
- Amsterdam is fun, go to Haarlem or up north in the province to see something else of Holland, 4 days may be too long, given everything else you wanna see, but the Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht aren't interesting to a foreign tourist imo
- Köln/Aachen/Rhine isn't the most interesting to see on such a tour, just saying
- Don't skip the Atlantic coast, in France, Spain or Portugal would be good
- 8 days in Switzerland might be a bit long, and expensive
- Slovenia is beautiful, but a bit of an odd egg in your list
- Bratislava?
- I don't go nowhere near Turkey, given the political situation right now.. Greece is very much affected by the refugee and economic crisis as well.
- I'd strongly recommend Spain, Mediteranean France and Portugal for a first European experience over places like Bosnia, Albania and Greece

Also, your route is indeed a bit weird. What transportation will you be using?

And don't forget to see the beautiful European nature and landscape, it's more than just big, old cities.

Source: Dutchfag who's been around Europe for quite a bit
>>
Dublin is a good starting point and 2-3 days are okay. And in general there is nothing wrong with the places you want to visit. But you make the same mistake as most "first trip to Europe" guys. You rush it.
You want to spend 2 days "in a region". Sounds good. But you will end up spending one day to arrive and one day to depart and have no day left to actually see something. So better slow down a bit and at cut half of your targets from your list. Or more.
Think about your priorities. Where do you really want to go? What is essential? What is just nice to have?

If you travel by train it's smart to include at least one scenic route.
http://www.eurail.com/europe-by-train/scenic-trains
This way you can enjoy beautiful landscape while travelling.
