Hey /sci/, you probably don't remember me, but five years ago I made a post here about how you guys changed my life.

I went to college for a pretty run-of-the-mill liberal arts program, and (unsurprisingly) I was living paycheck to paycheck after I graduated. I worked two jobs to make ends meet, including a graveyard shift at a gas station for over a year. I was poor, I was exhausted, I was depressed, and I had nothing to look forward to.

... then, in January of 2010, 4chan added a new board called /sci/.

When /sci/ was first created it was an amazing place. Every day there were dozens of new and interesting discussions - physics students arguing over the finer points of relativity, engineers brainstorming new projects, researchers collaborating on ideas for papers, undergrads asking for advice and grad students sharing their knowledge and experience. Spending time on this board rekindled an interest in science I'd almost forgotten I'd ever had... and so, a few months later I took the biggest, craziest risk of my life and went back to school to study physics. I want to stress that I'm not one of those guys who 'wanted to be a scientists ever since I was three and a half years old' - I was terrible at science in high school, I'm still terrified of math, and if it hadn't turned out that I was actually pretty decent at doing physics I'd probably be back at the gas station working overnights.

An hour ago, I got a call from the chair of my department congratulating me on passing the Doctoral Exam and being admitted into the PhD program. They want to meet with me next week to go over the project I'm pitching for my dissertation, and at this point I'm basically one class away from being ABD. I don't know if anyone from the early days is still a regular here, but if you guys are out there, I just wanted to say thank you - you guys inspired me to take a huge risk and it changed my life.

Stay gold, /sci/.

Can someone red pill me on infintessimal groups, SO(3), and angular velocity?

I want to know how to derive pic related.
Abstract algebra books are boring af.
Anyone know of a good quick book or set of lecture notes on group theory?

thats a definition, there's nothing to derive

armstrong - groups and symmetry
>>
>>8615471
>thats a definition, there's nothing to derive
>>not deriving your definitions
My professor who wrote his lecture notes based on this book defined angular velocity as the vector [math] {^A\boldsymbol\omega^B} [/math] such that
[eqn] \frac{^A \mathrm{d} \mathbf{v}}{ \mathrm{d} t} = \frac{^B \mathrm{d} \mathbf{v}}{ \mathrm{d} t} + {^A\boldsymbol\omega^B} \times \mathbf{v} [/eqn]
holds.

Thanks. Will check out.
What's the prereqs?
>>
>>8615497
'deriving' usually means you some work to get from one side of the equality to the other

if your definition is just given by the equality, there's nothing to derive

>What's the prereqs?
basically nothing

Ive got this theory that a spacecraft should be able to get to max speed in space, and then shoot a probe or whatever with its own propulsion system from the primary. achieving speeds far faster than the first. Why is this not a thing? Pic unrelated

What are your opinions on physics compared to computer science? Is the dominance of physics over? Will computer science be the most influential branch of science in the 21st century or is it too limited in scope?

Note: This is not a university recommendation thread, but a discussion about the fields at large.

Hardware is still way too shit compared to biological organisms.

We need physicists to continue to help push physical boundaries of compute hardware.

I think computer science will just be more easily accessible and easier to monetize. But, if we are going by that criteria, might as well get an MBA.

So we all know videogames rot your brain, but does anyone here have any experience with kerbal space program?

I've been thinking of picking it up but I'm wondering if it actually teaches you anything about spaceflight, orbital mechanics, aerodynamics, etc. or if it's just another "sim" game with watered down physics to appeal to normies.

Videogames doesn't rot your brain at all...

I've been playing ksp for more than 100 hours and I recommend it to everyone interesting in space flights, orbital maneuvers etc... It's relatively easy to play and there is a lot of mods (realistic, new parts of real rockets, real solar system etc...)

A really good game I can only recommend

Never too late. Start by getting your mathematical foundations up to par (for now, up to differential and integral calculus) and learn the equivalent of physics 1 and 2 using the syllabus of a university. Once you brush up, go to a college to get your two-year because it's much cheaper there and transfer to a better university. Make sure you take good courses that exemplify your talents and desire for your major.
>>
>>8614573
>and learn the equivalent of physics 1 and 2 using the syllabus of a university

Or just read the textbook and do the exercises.

>nuclear engineering and astrophysics

These are dead ends with no jobs.

>astronautics

Enjoy unemployability after finishing your first and final project.

>electronic engineering

Unless you do analog, 90% of the work will be programming micro-controllers.
>>
>>8614573

Thanks for the advice. I've been self teaching coding and networking basics purely out of interest and possible entry level work that's not using my back. I'll switch my focus to maths and trawl some uni textbook sites/torrents. I simply cannot go to university though, not even 2 years. Fees and living costs, even deducted from assumed part time work during, would take me the best part of 20 years to save for at my current pay rate.

>>8614592

I realise most of it is far from the avenue of superb job prospects. I am however very open to compromise in terms of something related to my interests/passions and something that will pay the bills. I think Nuclear Engineering can have good job prospects but it is very much dependent on where one lives.

>90% of the work will be programming micro-controllers

I'd be quite content with that.

Why dont we have a single picture of the earth from any of the geosynchronous satellites we have in orbit?

They orbit at 35,000km - more than enough distance to get a good picture of the earth.

Are you telling me no one has strapped a fucking digital camera to any of them?
61 posts and 11 images submitted.

Why would anyone want to take pictures of the Earth from a geostationary orbit? It's a long way away, and you only get to look at a single spot. Placing cameras in LEO is better in every possible way.

jesus christ
>>
>>8610841
You know, satellites do not exist for the purpose of convincing flat earthers. Sane people usually already got it.

>>8610853
Well you can't just use a "shitty camera". It needs to work in fucking space. It's also not like you can just strap it to the satellites and that's it. It demands some engineering to power it, to process the pictures it makes and then send those pictures back to earth. If your satellite is supposed to something else entirely, then that's not something someone will do in his free time, because why not.

Despite that, here you go

You should go into tech consulting if you want to find out more about that subject.

The budgets are much, much bigger for national projects, so the tech (not sure about science specifically) is amazing.

Data centers being spun up, drones intercepting phone calls, and all that other cool shit that has been brought to the attention of the public after Snowden caused a stir.

1: Smart ballistics/missiles. Things that can maneuver on their own and avoid countermeasures while having countermeasures of their own. Payloads can be mass or nukes. But the nukes are only for frying crew with radiation, not much else.

2: Micro railguns.

There's not much else you can do without overheating. You can't hide. You can see everything. You can avoid pretty much anything you can detect. Thus, the smaller and faster the projectile the less likely it is to detect and avoid in time. Lasers don't work very well due to the amount of heat they create on your ship.
>>
>>8604987
>long range
Lasers for burning off communication equipment and other hull structures. Or even puncture the hulls, depending on how strong we can build lasers with current day reactors.

>mid range
Missiles. Maybe even nukes if you can afford it. EMP attacks might also be a good idea, depending how much money you can afford against shielding, might affect your own ship too though.
Good old Flak
High Mass Railguns. It's hard to defend against huge rocks with high relative velocity.

>close range
Hull breeching drones
Rotary (gatling) guns for shooting down missiles and drones
