Just wondering what governments and CEOs of oil companies would do or say if they suddenly realise that they only have 1 years worth of oil left

>peak oil
>only have 1 years worth of oil left
They'd have more than that.
>the hypothetical point in time when the global production of oil reaches its maximum rate, after which production will gradually decline.
>>
>>8611477
Peak oil refers to the peak in production, after which the barrel per day output will gradually decrease because current deposits are drying out and new deposits aren't enough to make up the difference.
>>
>>8611540
That'll never happen unless its accompanied by the declining demand of oil

If there is a shortage of teachers then why aren't teachers literally earning millions?

Because the budget won't stretch to cover several thousand (tens of thousands?) Of teachers all earning millions. If you didn't know that already, then I have some bad news for you.

But according to Econ 101, supply and demand should set the wages. If there really is a short supply of teachers and there is a high demand for them, then why aren't teachers earning millions right now?

We know a lot about black holes, what we don't know a lot about are dark matter and dark energy. A black holes leaves a lot of signature signs, mainly to do with its incredible mass (light warping around the horizon). Dark matter is simply a math equation that didn't work so everyone was like "well, there's probably something else out there we just can't see." That's it.

Then look at options for career advancement. Or just enjoy working. Working is about loving what you do.

Besides, she got into HR with a shitty comm degree because she's a woman. I fell for the business management meme and I'll probably never advance past operations manager unless I get a graduate's degree. I love what I do, but it hits home when you see people a bit younger than you driving better cars and having bigger houses with more career advancement opportunities.

Getting a master's degree in anything can suck though. Takes forever, no promise for payoff in many fields, etc.

If humanity is doomed in the long run due to environmental damage and the near impossibility of interstellar travel,
is there any point in putting a significant amount of effort into accomplishing anything or having kids?
Most people take these aspects for granted but truly if even Darwin dictates that we have no reason to live, why even try to do anything beyond that which leaves you content?

Maybe this would fit more on /his/ but it didn't seem out of place on /sci/.
I'm assuming that most of the people on /sci/ have their own answer to this question since they usually circlejerk about grades and careers.
I figured it'd make the most sense to ask people who'd be more likely to have already considered this shit.

How would /sci/ go to isolate peaks like these?

Top graph is my raw signal, where I'm trying to get "shocks" from. Second graph is a transformed version which makes them more obvious. In each burst, I want to know how many shocks there were (in this easy case 2 per burst, and maybe 3 for the last one).

The problem is that the level of the signal, relative levels of the shocks and number of shocks are widely variable; and timing is as well to a lesser extent. So for example, a simple threshold won't work because there will either be shocks under it, or it will mark two shocks too close together as a single one. Simple local minimum/maximum won't work either because of the noise.

I've tried a few approaches, but they either end up not being robust enough to variations of the signal or too sensitive to noise.

>>8611804
Smooth then FFT?
>>
Sort of depends on what part of the shock you want to pick. Peak or onset?

I would suggest trying cross correlation with a template shock. If that works then you're golden. The trick is figuring out what to use for the template shock.

Faulting that I would try using kurtosis. Specifically go on google scholar and search for 'kurtosis baillard'. That could be helpful as kurtosis should be level insensitive and should pick out the onset of the shock.

If you have a method that works but is too sensitive to noise, you could try wavelet denoising. If you're using matlab the wavelet toolbox has some pretty simple functions you could try out.
>>
check height of a position
check if heights to the left and right are lower or equal
repeat step 2 always moving one more sample to the left and the right until a threshold in width or height difference to the first point is reached.
This should reliably detect arcs with a minimum width or height if the graph is as smooth as your trandformed one.
I have an interesting idea for a really noisy graph which would cause the algorithm to miss a general large shock due to many smaller maxima in the graph. Im not sure if this would work but it sounds cool to me:
Start with a very small threshold and detect all maxima with the algorithm.
These maxima now make up ylur new graph. Now increase the threshold and do it again. Repeat until the threshold is as big as the initial threshold you wanted in the first place

Should you go through this book even if you're going to be assigned a different book? Is it really worth the extra time? This is my dilemma.

Some genius medfag want to save my life? All my salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, sublingual, accessory parotids, all both sides) have been swollen for over 7 months now. I have been to countless specialists and a rheumatologist, and was ultimately diagnosed with "idiopathic sialadenosis", because they ruled everything out. I was checked for every virus, every bacteria, every autoimmune disease multiple times, every STD, and they found nothing. I was basically told to live it with... which is not possible. I look worse than the guy in this pic. I am only fucking 19 years old too, this shit is ruining my life completely.

So I've trying to get my head around the concept for a while now.

As far as I can tell it is simply ignoring the fact you're dividing a negative number by a negative number for the ease of calculation.

Is that seriously it, or at an I missing something? It seems like it should just be a footnote about expressing double negatives

Define a binary operation * on two ordered pairs (a,b)*(c,d)=(ac-bd,ad+cb). No need to invoke sqrt(-1) at all.
>>
>>8608686
Our definition of the natural numbers is axiomatic rather than constructive. We have not told you what the natural numbers are (so we do not address such questions as what the numbers are made of, are they physical objects, what do they measure, etc.) -
we have only listed some things you can do with them and some of the properties that they have. This is how mathematics works- it treats its objects abstractly, caring only about what properties the objects have, not what the objects are or what they mean. If one wants
to do mathematics, it does not matter whether a natural number means a certain arrangement of beads on an abacus, or a certain organization
of bits in a computer’s memory, or some more abstract concept with no physical substance; as long as you can increment them, see if two of them are equal, and later on do other arithmetic operations such as add and
multiply, they qualify as numbers for mathematical purposes (provided
they obey the requisite axioms, of course). It is possible to construct the natural numbers from other mathematical objects - from sets, for
instance - but there are multiple ways to construct a working model of the natural numbers, and it is pointless, at least from a mathematician’s standpoint, as to argue about which model is the “true” one - as long as
it obeys all the axioms and does all the right things, that’s good enough to do maths.

Have you realized that RTL/Anticlockwise is the true direction?

>Earth rotates on it's axis in a counterclockwise direction
>Earth rotates the sun in a counterclockwise direction
>The Moon orbits the earth and on it's own axis in a counterclockwise direction
>The sun moves from east to west (RTL)
>Cartesian coordinates increase from right to left
>The few remaining ancient languages, Arabic, Hebrew, and Chinese are traditionally RTL
>Ancient languages often did not have a preferred direction. It was European influence that changed them into LTR
>Driving on the left makes more sense because counterclockwise turns are more natural (which is why most countries do it)

>>8614423
Woops, I mean Cartesian angles increase from right to left. Disregard. Also Arabic numerals are traditionally RTL.
>>
>>8614423
Wouldn't the Earths orbit around the sun be clockwise, viewed from the opposite perspective though? Doesn't it all depend on what you designate up or down/North or South?
>>
>>8614439
Yes, indeed it does.

I've been trying to solve this for an hour and I feel like it's really easy but I can't

for the group N (all natural numbers) there are functions f,g,h, from N to N
I need to give an example of these functions where f is one-to-one so that
g o f = h o f, but g isn't equal to h

How do I do this?

I can't think of anything that doesn't step outside of the bounds of the group, and I have to use all the numbers of the group due to f needing to be one-to-one

What obvious thing am I missing?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
natural numbers aren't a group but you only need g and h to agree on the image of f, so for example define g and h to be the same on even numbers but different on odd numbers

f(n)=2n
g(n)=n/2 if n is even, n+1 if n is odd
h(n)=n/2 if n is even, n if n is odd

then g(f(n))=g(2n)=n=h(2n)=h(f(n)) but g isnt equal to h
>>
>>8614281
>I have to use all the numbers of the group due to f needing to be one-to-one

Wrong. You don't need it to use all the numbers because the function just has to be one to one, not onto. so what >>8614299 says works.
>>
f(n) := n+1
g(n) := n
h(0) := 9001
h(n) := g(n) if n != 0

Advanced placement is notoriously a high school thing, for students wanting to take higher level courses. It does not exist at the college level, it would not be called AP Chem, but instead would be called Chem 120 or whatever designation your school uses.
