Pancake sorting problem
Explain to me why my solution isn't o(nlogn) given that flipping the tray costs o(1)
>>8622066
flip and resize your picture
check some usual sorting algorithms and see where they are different from yours
count the number of operations yourself and see where there might be problems
do your homework by yourself
>>8622066
>taking a picture of a computer screen
just kill yourself
>>8622078
Yeah that's pretty retarded sorry
Thoughts on book encyclopedias?
Do you find them outdated and obsolete now that we have wikipedia and the internet?
Do you own a set?
>>8621910
>Thoughts on book encyclopedias?
I find them outdated and obsolete now that we have the internet.
More over, I argue they were never most useful, as it's always been better to have many good and focused books about one subject, than one shallow book about many different subjects.
>>8621910
Books are stupid and reading is stupid.
>>8621913
You're an idiot.
Encyclopedias are meant to give brief summaries.
The entries are well written and generally still valuable.
Best books on systems theory, emergence, chaos theory, etc.?
"The Black Swan" deals with it a bit.
>>8621801
Go to your library, find the one which interests you. The best book is the one you actually read.
>>8621811
I want a high-level exposition of these concepts not popsci brainlet shit
>Arguably be the greatest logician of all time (or at least the greatest logician since Aristotle)
>come up with arguably one of the greatest achievement in human thought, and probably the greatest mathematical achievement of the 20th century
>believe that you are being secretly poison and god
Yes, yes i know that being a mathematical logician is not the same as always thinking logically, but i just find it ironic sometimes
Is there a difference between scientific/mathematical and practical intellect?
>>8621656
After studying category theory, I started to question my agnostic beliefs. I saw some things with the monoid, and know there is something more to the world than what is tangible.
>>8621687
Can you elaborate more please?
He was a pretty chill dude. Towards the end of his life he became convinced that there was an international conspiracy to cover up hidden works of Leibniz
I have a hard time recovering from mistakes, regardless of the context or magnitude. I feel I have permanently proven that I am intellectually inferior. The feeling always recedes eventually but the wound is susceptible to reopening with further mistakes, which I inevitably make. Do any of you struggle with this? Have you found any coping mechanisms for reducing the time lost ruminating on your continually renewing status as a moron?

> I have a hard time recovering from mistakes, regardless of the context or magnitude. I feel I have permanently proven that I am intellectually inferior. The feeling always recedes eventually but the wound is susceptible to reopening with further mistakes, which I inevitably make.
It's like looking to a mirror.
> Do any of you struggle with this?
Yes.
> Have you found any coping mechanisms for reducing the time lost ruminating on your continually renewing status as a moron?
I wish. Some people both here and IRL have tried to help/convince me, but I always feel I can't trust their judgement, since I'm the only one inside my head and I only see a fog.
>>8621360
>reducing the time lost ruminating
This is the only thing worth of your entire post.
Yes it is. And you won't do it because you only come here to spout bullshit and feel better without doing anything until you fail again.
That's the average life.
The only solution that will make a difference between commom scholars and you is to master basic mathematics until calculus.

>ITT: Brainlet tries to justify why he is also pucci
/sci/'s thoughts on cédric villani
>>8621334
He looks like a villain from professor layton or something. Lmao
>>8621334
spider whisperer and a massive autist
probably also a good mathematician. I have no experience in advanced math, so even wildberger sounds credible to me
>>8621340
despite looking like the most autistic/edgiest mathematician i've ever known, he has a really good way of communicating and conveying abstract ideas to a less knowledgable public
How do I do this shit? I've tried all methods, should I try the good old "t=tan(x/2)"
>>8621166
are you a brainlet?
1/x^2=x^(-2) integrates to -x^(-1) and 1/xsqrt(x)=x^(-1.5) integrates to x^(-0.5)/(-0.5)
Actually it's easy.
> Separate into three different ones.
> First one is easy,
> Second one square root of x = t
> Third one is easy.
I always have to show how dumb I am on the internet.
>>8621170
I actually am.
Graph theory is my favorite are of math.
Does /sci/ approve of graph theory or has my life been a lie? Yes, I am that insecure ;_;
>Does /sci/ approve of graph theory
no

What's the easiest programming language to learn? I started C++ but that was too complex for me so I gave up, but I'm ready to start again.
>>8620705
isn't the language just a tool?
>>8620712
/thread
You might as well ask which language is the best to speak in. It's the ideas and thoughts you have that actually matter.

Are zombies theoretically possible?
Can we bring back the dead? answer me this
>>8620666
Based on the thousands of dead people who voted for hillary they are already among us
>>8620666
yes. Here's a Pepe
>>8620666
Yes I can create them I am a witch

3 zombies rise from the ground as a I fly off *cackles again* *coughs*
Are phd dissertations/theses available to be read online?
I met a market maker a little while ago and he said he got hired because he did a phd in discrete math. I'm interested in the field and I'd like to read some such papers to see if I can understand/decipher them.
>>8620534
Usually professors link their dissertation on their website.
If they got published by a scholarly journal, then yes. However, you'll need access to a database like JSTOR which can be expensive if you aren't part of a school.
>>8620534
you probably won't understand a discrete math phd thesis. pick up a discrete math book instead
Is weed actually bad for you?
Are there any reputable studies on the effects of marijuana consumption on cognition, lung health, and other areas?
>>8620413
No long term studies I know of; obviously chronic, frequent inhalation of smoke is detrimental to cardiovascular health. On the anictodal side any ex-pot head can attest to the permanent impairment of short term memory, and active smokers experience significant mood swings and some general cognative imparement between highs, much as a smoker gets on aggravated and lethargic after going hours without nicotine, or an alcoholic experiencing the same after going hours unintoxicated.
It will probably be several years before studies have any sizeable long term data on marijuana abuse.
>>8620413
long term use Is going to seriously mess up your ability to retain information
I'm PRETTY sure my IQ dropped 10 points after 4 years of chronic use
So doing some random maths for school and thought about root 2 in relation to triangles. If you have a triangle and 2 sides are equal to 1 and the hypotenuse is equal to √2 then how does the hypotenuse end? √2 is an irrational number and the decimal never ends or repeats, but shouldn't it have to end at some point for the line to end in the triangle or does the line keep going on forever? Which wouldn't work when applied to real world geometry.
>>8620210
Sure it does.
Take square.
Cut it on the diagonal
what's the new exposed length?
>>8620210
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeno's_paradoxes
The number represents a real length that would take an infinite amount of time to measure precisely. That doesn't mean the length is infinite.
What impact will Trump have on american education and science?
same impact as he'll have on the economy and on foreign relations.
he'll completely crap the bed and loudly insist that everything is better than ever
did I say "crap the bed"? I meant "piss the bed".
>>8619455
Wasn't he putting in charge a bunch of guys who were climate change deniers?
>>8619455
He will fuck everything up, just like Brexit will.
What a shitty time to do science, man.

Are all good topics to have foundations in to study CS. Why is CS a meme here?
>>8618008
Everything is a meme here. You can even see people saying E.E/math/physics are a meme
>>8618012
true even math is a meme.
>>8618008
because CS hardly ever actually means CS, it means "generic shitty computing program for brainlets who want to do TI or something"
also what you listed is a CS/Math double major:
CS:
>Algorithms
>Data Structures
>Computational Complexity
>Cryptography
>Machine Learning
The rest isn't really core CS, you will use only the most basic stuff of fields like statistics and number theory unless you specialize on them
