Hey /sci/,

Chemfag here. I'm currently finishing up my sophomore year and preparing to enter into my upper division courses. I'm really liking organic chemistry but I am not liking how it's taught. However, I am aware that this is an introductory class and that everything else I'll learn with time, so it's not too bad. However, I've recently encountered a problem in my pursuit of chemistry, and that is that if I ever want to do chemistry, I specifically have to do it either in an academic setting where I may have little choice in what I may want to study, or work for a company and only focus on what they want me to do for them. I cannot pursue chemistry as an amateur because either
1. Reagents are banned
2. Glassware is banned
3. Analysis tools are literally in the millions of dollars range.

So my question is, what do? Are there chemists here who were bothered by any of this at all? If so how did you deal with it? am I doomed to be someone else's puppet?

lol if you thought organic was serious shit, wait till you get a good beating from biochem where labs are nothing but titrations and other annoying shit
>>

I didn't though, I honestly don't understand why people believe organic is the most hellish class there is. I had no problem understanding the subject matter, but it was a shit ton of work to do. I'm more worried about Pchem than anything, since I've heard that is the class that makes or breaks you.

Please explain what this is.

I have a really intresting question that i have been thinking about for months. i thought i will ask you guys.

what makes the jet engine and the rocket fly? I mean i understand that mass comes out at high speed and that is how they fly, but it makes no sense.

take a propeller, for example, it pushes the air backward and that causes the propeller to be pushed forward. i can get that.

now take a jet engine. air comes in one end and then is ignited and then the air speed up and goes out the other end. now why would that cause the jet engine to move forward. i mean the air escaping is not pushing against any thing at all. this air was sped up the the heat produced by the burning of fuel. this is working nothing like the propeller. the same is true for a rocket engine. the rocket is not pushing against anything in space. so why is the rocket moving forward.

a similar thing happens with bullets and recoil. the rifle only recoils once the bullet has left the barrel. why is the recoil of pushing the bullet not enough? why does the barrel rise? it is the same thing as a rocket engine. but how are they working?

>the rifle only recoils once the bullet has left the barrel
I don't think this is exactly true. I think the slide pulls back in time with the bullet leaving; only when the slide has hit the end of its track does it kick the gun. This revolver has kick from the start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSlnLBcWbHA

The reason a rocket flies is the difference in force from the pressure of the propellant on the back wall and the non-existant wall that is the nozzle.
>>
>>8704644
Of course it's pushing against something. It's pushing against the propellant, just as the the propeller is pushing against the air. It doesn't matter what happens to the propellant, just that it pushed the propellant back and thus gained a force in the opposite direction.

> the rifle only recoils once the bullet has left the barrel.
Nope, wrong. The rifle recoil travels at the speed of sound immediately after the propellant ignites.
>>
>>8704644
You are trolling right? A jet engine is just a couple of propellers in a ducted fan cowling with some fuel injected and ignited to increase the velocity of the escaping gas. Its not much different than a propeller.

>the rocket is not pushing against anything in space

Yes... it is. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. You cant throw shit out the back of a rocket without said shit throwing the rocket in turn. The only reason gas can escape the nozzle is because of the pressure the nozzle exerts on the gas, and bice versa.

I don't know about any tech podcasts, but 99% Invisible is fucking fascinating. I think it started out just being about architecture/civil engineering stuff, but they deviate from that pretty regularly. It's a well known fact that light travels in the path that takes the shortest amount of time, not necessarily the shortest distance. This fact is used to derive snell's law. But what if you have a material with such a high index of refraction that it would be faster for the light to just bend around it? In theory it's possible, but has this ever been verified?

If this is true, this would cause a lensing effect around the edge of any material. Is this taken into account when measuring gravitational lensing around distant galaxies? If not, then the amount of lensing that's actually due to gravity should be less then what we currently measure. This implies that galaxies are not as massive as we calculate them to be, which could possibly eliminate any need for dark matter in our models.

What are your thoughts /sci/? Also general physics thread.

No. Light travels in straight lines. Also even if it were possible for light to move like you describe then it would need to imply information propagating backwards in time (how would the photon know to bend before it hit the object?) I think there are some strange metamaterials that cause some strange effects, but nothing like you described. Finally light travels the path such that it's optical path length and geometric path length are both minimised (Fermats principle), the bending nature of the path would seem to imply that the geometric path length isn't minimised.

There, three reasons this wouldn't happen irl.

My turn:

I'm trying to do this classical mechanics question:
>Assume that the earth consists of a core of uniform density [math] \rho _c [/math] and a mantle of density [math] \rho _m [/math]. Further assume that the boundary between the two is of a similar shape to the outer surface, only with a radius 3/5 as large. Find the ratio [math] \rho _c / \rho _m [/math] that explains the observed quadrupole moment.

I've been at it the past couple of hours and I'm at a bit of a loss.

i dont understand something and it's making me feel stupid

my friend says that "all pigeons are birds" doesnt mean that "all birds are pigeons", but if its all pigeons, then how can he be sure? he tells me it's a logic rule, but i dont understand

It means that there are other types of birds apart from pigeons.
Alternatively, pigeons can't be of other types of animals but birds.
>>

nigga have you never heard of seagulls? Those are birds, but they're not pigeons. q.e.d.

a square is a figure with four parallel sides. it can be argued that all squares belong to the group of shapes we call rectangles

however, not all rectangles have four parallel sides of equal length. equal length is what defines a square. so not all rectangles are squares.

all M&Ms are candy, but not all candy are M&Ms.

now, if the only birds in the sample set that you're talking about are actually pigeons, then yes, all the birds are pigeons. obviously, pigeons are a type of bird, all pigeons are birds.

but not EVERY bird in existence is a pigeon.
