Become a dog breeder. It's the only way you'll ever get to do it without getting lynched by SJWs and religious fanatics.

It's fun if you're into it. Sadly over half of the entire industry is made up of overpaid morons who call themselves engineers despite being glorified copy pasters.

You mean, why are the brainlets celebrated now. There's still incredible scientists, its just that they aren't as eager to chase the spotlight.

Even if the temp part weren't anthropogenic, the ocean acidification part definitely is.
Then again, reducing CO2 emission is pointless since methane trap have already been trigerred so the run-away process is already started.

Personally i don't care, since i plan on becoming an unreal human bean.

Should I be worried if I don't find anything particularly remarkable about theorems or proofs that my textbooks tell me are "beautiful"?

e.g. Hardy, in A Mathematician's Apology, says "It will be clear by now that, if we are to have any chance of making progress, I must produce example of ‘real’ mathematical theorems, theorems which every mathematician will admit to be first-rate"
These two theorems and their proofs are the infinitude of the primes and the irrationality of the square root of 2. All I can think is... "okay... I guess that's kinda cool?" I cannot conjure up the genuine feelings that these really are interesting results, let alone "beautiful" or "first-rate."

No, people have different tastes. I am only truly interested in theorems with geometric significance.
>>
>>8711947
My strong impression is that you havent found the right theorem yet. But keep looking ;D
>>
>>8711947

I never found any straight up proofs to be "beautiful"

Really I've never had much fun with math without using a computer. Using a computer you can always pull a fractal out of your ass with pretty much everything you can think of.

Einstein wrote a recommendation to the White House to build the A-bomb.
Grothendieck organized a seminar on Algebraic Geometry in a war zone.

Einstein died wealthy and as a symbol for genius itself.
Grothendieck died in the woods, autistically pondering why the devil made the speed of light 299 792 458 m/s and not a round number.

Einstein was owned by big daddy Bohr all the time.
Grothendieck was owned by no-one.

Einstein went into all fields of theoretical physics.
Grothendieck started out like that, but then went into Algebraic Geometry and never found his way out again.

Why are American SATs so shit? British A-Levels and other European secondary education standards (or even the International Baccalaureate) are far more superior, yet the SAT is still used in admissions tests for almost all American Universities.

Would any Yanks like to explain this strange phenomenon?

>test that is highly g-loaded

Good schools just increase the cutoff you need. If you want to get into Ivy-level schools your SAT will probably need to be very close to the maximum score.

Then they start looking at number/score of AP courses and extracurriculars.

sage because the only two good unis in britain have their own entrance exams anyways

>Best universities on the planet use SAT

Pick one dumb ass. If your A-levels were so good then we'd use them, we don't so they aren't. QED.

Just watched Bill Nye last night on CNN talking about exoplanets. This is getting ridiculous. Hurricanes? Grab Bill Nye. Exoplanets? Grab Bill Nye. Higgs boson? Grab Bill Nye.

Despite his honest advocacy to popularize science, Bill Nye is not a researcher, nor Neil Degrasse Tyson or other pop /sci/ figures. Why can't the media contact the actual researcher and have them on TV describing their findings, rather than having Bill Nye the TV guy who pretends to do science talking about every single scientific stories there is.

Because they explain it in a way brainlets can understand.
>>
>>8710974
But the ways they explain it are often very wrong and result in non-brainlets being confused later.
>>
>>8710964
I wouldn't say it's harming science just ruining brainlet's perception of science by giving them a psuedointellect. But who cares, because why did anyone ever really care what brainlets think to begin with?

Is it possible to direct electricity through air? I mean shooting lightning accurately at a target.

Also, is it possible to shoot lightning or create arcs in space or does the vacuum prevent that?

Just wondering because I'm in the middle of designing a board game and would like my spaceships to be able to have electricity based weapons but if that's physically not possible I would drop that. And since you are the smartest bunch on 4chan I thought I'd ask here.

You wouldn't really be able to direct it, it'd just hit whatever is closest.

>Is it possible to direct electricity through air?

Companies have done it (Picatinney Arsenal [sp?]). It seems really hard to do though.

It's not possible through vacuum in the sense of lightning because you need a medium to send current through. You'd also need ground to complete the circuit in air, unless it's a double lined lightning gun. In space it might as well be some kind of particle weapon.
>>
>>8710505
I know that spaceships don't operate within an atmosphere. I just wanted to first establish whether it's possible at all because it interests me, and then ask if it's possible in the vacuum space.

>>8710507
I know that there is some kind of electro laser where they use a very powerful laser to create a plasma stream that lasts for the tiniest moment, but in that time they send current through that stream since it's conducting in that form to hit whatever the laster shot at. But I also want to know if it's perhaps possible to target lightning without that.

Since Trump is cutting domestic agencies to rebuild the military, I'm wondering which is better for science? Defense spending or spending on things like the EPA that are getting cut?
67 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Well, it's not quite that simple.

Besides the NSF, agencies like the EPA, the NOAA, etc that are getting cut are the best bang for your buck with regards to science funding. So this will take a lot out of them and really, really sucks. But, those agencies make up only a small fraction of the federal budget, much more of it goes to things like housing and transportation where effectively 0% of it goes to funding any sort of science.

So defense spending is better than social spending, and overall in terms of gross dollar value $54B to the military is probably worth more than, idk haven't looked at the numbers, maybe $5B to actual sciences and $49B to housing and infrastructure. But, this comes at the cost that all the new research funding goes toward defense related activity, while the sciences funding being cut can go to research with merit in many different fields.

>rebuild
what the fuck does this even mean? the US military has never had a period where its been demilitarized and had to "rebuild" anything. It gets more and more funding every fucking year
>>
>>8714654
The US military was pretty badly demoralized after years of Obama's misrule. Some additional defense spending goes a long way to reassuring the military that Trump won't neglect them like Obama did.
