Faggy question, /sci/:
Any other STEM majors out there who feel like they're losing their sense of humor the more they study science?
Making people laugh used to come really easily to me, but after three years of school, my comic wit has pretty much dried up completely. And I generally feel a lot more... Spock-like.
I notice there are a lot of aspie kids on /sci/ who don't pick up on sarcasm and can't tell when they're being trolled- more than on any other board. Wondering if there's a correlation.
Well yeah obviously learning science makes you more autistic/social Caterpillar i mean how does that not make perfect sense.
I totally get it. You dont want your pleb friends to find you uninteresting but you realize you have to make sacrifices if you want to learn science, like becoming autismo overnight.
>>8699892
You see that happen with programmers alot.
Especially gloom. He is completely silent unless you try and talk to him....
The trouble with understanding is that the more the science is engineered the less funny it gets...just like the way the more maths is scienced the less funny it gets.
However. Philosophers, comedians and artists will always chuckle cause their imperfections...
make their own problems to laugh at.
I don't think it's you anon. I think it's society as a whole has changed.
Just look at /pol/ and Trump. Nobody can tell if the things they are saying are serious, or just a joke/hyperbole. This was a big problem when Trump was campaigning because he said some crazy stuff and nobody knew if he Trump meant it literally. Then there are those on /pol/ who are ironically racist who are cheered on by actual racists. Society have changed so irony and double entendres are our way of saying anything we want with out actually meaning it.
There was also a study done on sarcasm over the internet. They concluded it is impossible for anybody to tell sarcasm from written text unless there's some clue like a smiley face next to it. People will just assume it's sarcasm if they disagree with it and assume it's serious if they do agree.
How the fuck do I prove that the area of an ellipse with minor and major axis a and b is pi*a*b WITHOUT doing an integral?
you times a and b because of the power between them. then you multiply by pi to show the significance of that fact. well-ah!!

Space deformation from the area of a circle ?

Pic related are in my self-study holster. Are they terrible? Is there better? Recommendations pls.

Place them upright, otherwise they degrade faster.
If I killed myself by shooting myself through the roof of the mouth, would I hear the shot before dying? Or would I be off to DMT heaven before then?
>>8699351
Also, on that note, if I obliterated my brain in such a manner, would I even be eligible for a DMT heaven?
Yeah the DMT is produced in the liver so you're good senpai
>>8699351
you're in luck: many bullets travel faster than the speed of sound
How many of you guys work at interesting locations for your various scientific (or non-scientific) jobs? And if you do work at an interesting or remote location where is it at and what do you do there? The Antarctic, under the ocean, remote mines, any place that you hazardous place that you won't find many people at.
>>8699048
*any place potentially hazardous that you won't find many people at.
>>8699048
Why are the buildings above the ground?
>>8699048
I don't. But I remember some anon here who (from his posts) worked for a while at McMurdo. Which I thought was pretty cool.

If humanity ever takes to the stars and begin to live traveling through deep space, how would we measure time in its most basic form for the average person? Would we continue to use the concept of Earth hours, days, etc?
>>8698825
Atomic clocks could determine seconds, but anything higher than that would be arbitrary.
>>8698825
I suppose it depends on how important the sun is.
Most planet colonization plans have everyone living under 6 feet of dirt in order to avoid radiation damage. If you are doing that, then there is no point in synchronizing your schedule to a sun you never see.
If you are on a space station, asteroid, or tidally locked planet, you can make days and nights any length you want, so why make people adjust to anything new?
Only in the distant future would people be walking around with light from a different star visible most of the day. Who knows what we will be by the time that happens?
>>8698825
Assuming that circadian rhythm cannot be changed, then probably. People living on those planets would be permanently jet lagged.
environmental engineering vs chemical engineering. which is superior /sci/?

Smegma
Environmental but I'm biased because that's my field.

just do civil
>chemical engineering

Pure math guy here. Interested in applied CS. What skills are needed to do research in computer systems / operating systems area at the PhD level?

Why don't they teach about higher dimensional shapes (like hypercube, pentaracts, etc) in middle or high school?
>>8698406
Because its retarded. and kids will not understand it.
Same reason we don't teach quantum mechanics, its a field filled with bullshit online, and for a non-physicist, its very hard to tell the difference.
>>8698406
i know all about the tessaract

With all the recent talk about how the general population is not well versed in important topics like science, the government has finally responded. Kinda...
I do wonder what effect this will have? Will Grade 13 and 14 be optional or mandatory? Will they be college level classes that can count for credits? Or will it be a completely 2 year delay on being able to get a diploma and then attend uni.
Well, either way I suppose the education level of everyone in the country will increase which is a good thing.
They could stop teaching worthless crap in all the other grades instead.
can you link me to this article?

highschool is a joke anyways
quebec does it right with cegep, you get kids used to responsibility and give them more freedom
After watching this video I have become a skeptic.
This alarmism has really gone out of hand. Obviously global warming is real and it's happening and we are contributing to it, but he's right: there's no reason and no evidence to believe it will be catastrophic which is what conservatives have been saying all along.
The only argument the scientific illiterate alarmists have been able to muster is "what if we're right? We'd have to pay an enormous price then." Which is easily rebutted with "what if you're wrong? The price would be just as high."

Yeah it's bullshit. Notice how CO2 always follows temperature change, it can't be responsible.

>I have become a skeptic
Are you referring to the last time you posted this exact same thread and got BTFO? Nah you were probably lying then too.
>SLR when data non-independent

Fuck off you stupid cunt.
Meditation is being promoted throughout the healthcare industry and in schools and gyms.
Most people deny it's religious whatsoever 'you can meditate and not buddhist/hindu/relgious' they say.
But is it /really/ any different from other religious practices? Are there real benefits to meditation that are substantial? Or have we all just decided to push eastern religion/philosophy all over society as a trend that's slowly been integrating with our own culture since the 60s?
>>8697852
It's a waste of time.
>>8697852
it's not science of trying to be science you dweeb
it literally means "dude cut the noise and breathe slowly for a bit"
>>8697861
you're a waste of space
>lightspeed is always the same
why the heck is lightspeed so special? are there any studies? do we know it yet? i need to understand!
>>8697743
It's the speed limit. Yes there are lots of studies. Having a speed limit is essential to maintaining causality.
>>8697750
>it's the speed limit
but why?
every mass that travels faster converts into energy? is it just a natural stop sign? WHY??? i need to understand!
>>8697743
>Why
Not really a question for science. At a certain point you just need to accept it: that's the way it is.
Doesn't 7 earth sized planets orbiting a star completely destroy established Astrophysical theories on solar system formations?
No, it's a tiny star. Think of it more like a very massive gas giant with satellites.
