Hello /sci/,

Mechanical Engineering undergrad here.

In cryptocurrency mining using graphics cards or ASIC's, or even just in server rooms, waste heat seems to be a large untapped resource that could be used to reduce the power consumption of the components.

Using a small thermoelectric device, the temperature differential could be used to drive a voltage which could be used to produce a small amount of energy which the component could use, to even say reduce the power consumption by 1-5%, which for a 150W graphics card could turn into a substantial saving. Especially when the manufacture of the small thermoelectric device is fairly cheap (£5ish), whereas a new graphics card (say rx 580) is £200-300.

Do you guys think this idea could form a decent dissertation paper?

Cheers

I think it's a neat idea. I...is that good enough?

Thanks senpai.

I was more curious to see if there was something obvious I was missing, or if this was already done by Nvidia/AMD/IBM or something

I think that you'd get a better idea if you just ran it by your supervisor.

What should one do in the case of a heart attack? I mean, besides shouting help and maybe calling an ambulance, are there any ways to minimize the pain on the chest? Pic unrelated.

Chew a 500mg aspirin and hold it under the tonge. That will improve survival up to a 50%.
Pain management is just symptomatic relief and won't affect overall survivam

>>9167339
you will feel chest and arm pain. obviously call for help and scream like a faggot. People are not ready for it (CPR and such), so maximize your chance. the more people know the better. and no there's nothing you can do for the pain in your immediate state.

>>9167428
don't do that. your only chance is for people seeing you. don't die in your bathroom alone, looking for meds.

I don't get it. I get the basics, but the third filter is black magic.

here's a question:
two filters, #1 horizontal and a #2 vertical.
why doesn't the first one let 45 degree light partially through, and the second one also let it partially through?
is it a filter or a polarization re-orienter?

matrix multiplication

Technically, you just need to write the linear equation into coeffient matrix. The answer is :
T =
[1 -1 0 0]
[0 0 1 0]
[1 2 0 -1]
[0 0 0 1]
>>
>>9167274
that doesn't make sense? I cant find T with matrix multiplication

Are there any benefits of creating humanoid robot that is larger than human for a war purposes? Or would it be just a useless tall target, that would be the first thing destroyed during battle?

No, obviously not. You could do some minor damage to one side of the hip and it would be disabled. Not to mention the numerous other issues. This is just retarded humanocentrism, like we have when talking of life, intelligence and the general future.
>>
>>9166904
No purpose. Real battle robots would probably be like giant tanks if they were big, or spidery
>>
>>9166904
depends on the scale, something like the tau suits or heinleins original MI suits are probably doable because you could maintain high degrees of mobility while still gaining the adaptability of the human form. It would be literally impossible to build something titan sized and still retain any degree of functionality. And in both cases I find it hard to imagine a world in which you can construct something like that with all the functionality we dream of and not have the technology to build a swarm of smaller and cheaper drones

Is learning LaTeX a worthwhile endeavor for undergraduates?

How would I go about learning it?

If I type my problem sets in latex will my professors give me better grades? Will it lend more validity to my work compared to hastily scrawling shit on badly torn notebook paper 15 minutes before class?

>Is learning LaTeX a worthwhile endeavor for undergraduates?
yes

>How would I go about learning it?
try starting with overleaf.com

>If I type my problem sets in latex will my professors give me better grades?
no

> Will it lend more validity to my work compared to hastily scrawling shit on badly torn notebook paper 15 minutes before class?
it'll make it easier to read, and graders like that, you don't want your grader to be in a bad mood when they look at your work
>>
>>9166838
>How would I go about learning it?

Do your homework assignments in it and look up what you need.

>give me better grades

When you fuck up something, it will be far easier to fix.
When you do similar (sub)problems, you can just copy and paste.
The easier it is for the grader to read, the easier it is for him to follow your work and give you (partial) credit.
>>
>>9166838
How would I go about learning it?
Go here https://www.latex-project.org/get/
Get it.
Start writing your notes in latex. If you don't know how to make some symbol, look it up.
If you just start doing in, you will get used to it in about a week or so.

I'm having a debate with a coworker and he says that if you have 2 water bottles, one full and one empty that the full one will hit the ground first if dropped at the same height. I said that weight does not effect air resistance and that the 2 bottles have the same drag. Therefore they will hit the ground at the same time. He also says that mass and weight are the same thing... which one of us is correct?

Picture is of the eclipse I took in NY using a window to make 2 reflections of the sun.

Just go outside and drop 2 water bottles you dingus.
>>
>>9166704
We did and he said the full one hit first, to me it looked like he let go of it first
>>
>>9166687
The earth is attracted more to the full bottle so it will hit the ground first, but the difference is negligible.

what the FUCK is the difference between these three?

I know that two/three is used for partial derivatives as opposed to one... but I have seen them used interchangeably in the same context.
I have ALSO seen them used for separate values in the same context.

this would mean you're eligible if you're either (at least 35 and born in the USA) or (both parents were citizens and you were a resident for at least 14 years). the eligibility rules are the following 3 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States#Eligibility):
>at least 35 years old
>born in the USA, or both parents were citizens
>have lived at least 14 years in the country

which is e--> (a∧(b v p)∧r)

Can anyone recommend a good book or website covering Complex Analysis stuff?

I'm doing my MS Math, taking a class on it and the teacher's a Russian asshole. I have rudin's Real and Complex Anal and read it all the time but I'm looking to supplement it cause the prof covers a lot of other things.

Thanks

If evolution is real, how come people never die from eating the fruit from a plant of normally safe to species that mutated to produce a toxin?
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>9166341
Eating the fruit from a plant doesn't kill the plant. Infact, whatever eats the fruit usually is helping spread the seeds by pooping them out somewhere else
>>
>>9166351
That has nothing to do with my question. Poisonous fruit and undeniably exist, if they could mutate to produce a toxin in their evolutionary history why couldn't a normally safe plant eaten by humans mutate to produce a toxin as well.

Yes. Also from an environmental perspective. If not solely plants, then at least minimise your meat consumption. Americans, as a whole, eat so much meat. There's also a stigma against eating it in many places which I find extremely strange.
