Hi all,

I'm looking for /sci/'s finest MS Excel savants who could potentially crack a painfully annoying issue I have been facing on a daily basis. To put it briefly; I work with sets of data on MS Excel on a daily basis and I frequently have to use the CTRL+F solution to find the criteria I am looking for so I can subsequently replace it with another value. Take the following example:

I have two spreadsheets open- A and B. In spreadsheet A I will have to CTRL+F the word 'unknown'. This will give a result which will contain the word unknown (of course) among other information which I require i.e. 'ABCCorpeation;Unknown;ID1234'. I then manually CTRL+C the ID value at the end of this string of information and open up spreadsheet B. I again CTRL+F and instead of searching for 'uknown' in spreadsheet B, I paste my copied ID. Spreadsheet B is a very simple spreadsheet which just contains IDs and names, so when I paste this ID it gives me a single result and in the column beside it, I can copy down the name associated with the ID. I then go back to spreadsheet A and replace the word 'unknown' with this copied name. Then I would move on.

I assume you struggled to read through that cripplingly long-winded description of my task, but that is an issue which I have to laboriously tackle every day. To add to my woes; the spreadsheet 'A' I describe is actually dozens of spreadsheets which I look for the word unknown in and replace with an actual name after matching it with its corresponding ID.

So my big question is; is there any way that this could be conceivably simplified using a several nested functions, because to date I have been struggling to do this or even fathom how to tackle it or what to use. Please /sci/, help this MS Excel goblin ease the pain in his fingers. Any advice would be truly appreciated

You could use VBA, or C# (adding reference to the office assemblies).

/g/ could help, but they'll give you shit at first because LOL, not FLOSS
>>
Several possible ways, ordered by increasing complexity and timeconsumption (2 minutes to 1-2 days of work)

A) Check out the vlookup-Function and its documentation
B) Design a pivot table to do what you wish
C) Write a custom macro
D) Write a C# program that parses your Excel-File and returns a new excel-File with the desired result.
>>
>>9164321
Thanks man, I might holler at /g/ alright. VBA was the method I was thinking for this one
>>9164323
Cheers pal. I'm aware of how VLOOKUP works, but i'm struggling as to how I would implement it when the data is not only separated by semi colons, but that the task I'm performing takes place over so many spreadsheets. Thoughts on how vlookup may be written to attack this issue?

Math majors and working mathematicians come in here please.
So I'm 19 and going back to school January. I thought since most people aren't that good in math and I practically have 4 months of free time. I want to get really good at math and major in math. The market can't be saturated, not a field where employers can pull the "you're overqualified" bullshit, they're all high paying jobs, probably no grad school so less debt and I become a better critical thinker. No one is born a fine artist neither, sure some folks are gifted in mathematics, but after learning the reason most folks are bad at math due to laziness. I really want to be good at it. /adv/ is full of depressed people who only talk about relationship problems. So I know I'm at the right place. Thanks in advance.

I'm 19 too, 4th semester sophomore, pure mathematics. I say sure, go for it. It is literally impossible to not get a job with a math degree (but you shouldn't get into math to get a job). If you want a kickstart get a geometry book (proof based) and study it. Euclidean Geometry is amazing to teach the essence of math. Also, I don't mean coordinate geometry. I assume you already know algebra so coordinate geometry won't help you. I mean pure axiomatic geometry, so that you learn the more abstract way math is done.

Other than that, if you get into math prepare yourself for the existential dread. Let me tell you something about me. When I was 5 I was diagnosed a genius. I attended special genius schools. I attended prestigious private high schools. I had all the odds in my side, and now I am succesful as a math major but you want to know what I am compared to Terence Tao? A piece of shit. What I am compared to Gauss? A retard. What I am compared to Riemann? A disgusting worthless ant that has no value at all and will die with no one caring for it.

I have to live with that every day. Could you live with that? Could you stay happy with those thoughts killing you from the inside? I can. Can you?
>>
>>9163819
There are jobs you can get with a math degree that still pay like shit. Teaching, for example. Grad school can pay for itself, and graduate level math classes are really where you get into meaty, interesting problems. Undergraduate math is all introductory or survey courses, rarely (if ever) developing theory from a fundamental level. If you're going to major in math, at least minor in computer science (or just take some CS electives). The courses at your CS department are not going to be mathematically rigorous, and they'll be full of the most annoying autistic weebs you will ever meet, but they will teach you skills you're likely to need. Look into undergraduate research assistantships. They'll give you a glimpse of what grad school is like, letting you make a more informed decision about whether or not it's for you.

How hard is it to get a reasonable working understanding of quantum mechanics? Is this a worthy goal for the pure intellectual sake of it if you aren't a physicist and your profession is in another field?

I feel like it's kind of an ultimate goal of mine but I don't know how long and arduous this road is.

This is your island savant with existing people.
Useless in other fields but way above in the one were all ressources go. Same result as if you would upscale the brain but keep the ressource allocation normal.

Btw if you are interested in a real example of bigger brains with people look at neanderthal. They had bigger brains but research says it was allocated different so not quite what you're looking for.

Why isn't science and intellectual inquiry at the forefront of the public mind? I'm sick of excuses being made for anti-intellectuals and pseudo-intellectuals. The topics being denied by the public to the detriment of society and the environment are not advanced. They are high school level let's make no mistakes here. And these people do not understand them

Why is education not a primary concern of the US? Please explain this to me. Do these people not realize the amazing use cases for mathematical and scientific knowledge? Do they not comprehend that adherence to the intellectual status quo holds our species back from reaching its full potential

I can go on and on for hours about this and it's beyond frustrating in a way that is just demoralizing and disappointing. What can be done?

How can we fix this? I'm so sick of this. Is it just a problem of the fact that the average IQ of our species is relatively low and the only people who understand what's going on are at the high extremes? How can we overcome this without trampling the rights of the unwashed idiotic masses?

Why do we have a narcissistic anti-intellectual uneducated buffoon running the most powerful nation on Earth? Why are we allowing him to appoint a woman fundamentally against education, as the head of the Department of Education? A person fundamentally against environmental restrictions on businesses, as the head of the Environmental Protection Agency?

Why is this happening? What has gone wrong? Is democracy just broken? Have we allowed ourselves to get intellectually lazy as a society and years of standing by as conservatives pumped out anti-intellectual propaganda through the radio and television waves has condemned us to mediocrity?

Literally what the fuck is happening that we are allowing this to happen

How are you people dealing with the saturation in STEM, especially in the US?
Everyone and their mother is being memed into getting a science degree, and the job market simply can't handle it.
None of my friends who did mechanical engineering found jobs yet, same with my chem E friend, and it's been 6 months since graduation.
The only one in my group of friends that has a job in his field is a comp E, but even then he's only making like 40k, 20k less than the average for a new grad 5 years ago.

I decided to get my PharmD and I'm seeing that it's literally fucking impossible to find a job as a pharmacist anywhere but Texas and Alaska, the market is simply too saturated; too much supply and not enough demand.

Stem degrees aren't cheap, I was on a full ride in undergrad and I'm most likely going to finish grad school with 120k in debt.
What are you /sci/entists planning to do once you finish school? This shit literally keeps me up at night and the apathy is starting to affect my desire to study.

I'm in my mid 30's and went back to community college a few years ago, decided to major in Computer Science. I'll be transferring to a good University next year.

My question is: Can I earn a living wage while being competent at my profession? I'm not a genius but I have straight A's in everything CS, MATH, Physics, etc related, so I think I can at least function.

Or do I need to "stand out" and out perform everyone while working ungodly hours weekly just to keep my job. I really just want to live and not make my job my life.

What would happen, if a sun made out of ice would collide with a normal, lava made sun?

The stars would be exactly the same sized and the overall temperature of the sun made of ice would be -1000 °C and the normal sun's would be respectively 1000 °C.
Would the suns annul each other so that only empty space would remain or would a sun of zero °C spring up?

Holders of bachelor degrees in math, how much harder than calc 2 does a math degree get? I've done well in everything so far but I'm just curious how much harder it would get. Does the switch away from mostly algabra based problems mess with you?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>9165218
Intro to proofs is to analysis as Calc 2 is to multivariable and diff eq.

I think that the difficulty is the same or easier because hopefully you reach a level of maturity such that the difficulty comes from volume of work more than application of ideas.
>>
at the undergraduate level many of the proof problems are still "algebra based" that is, they are proofs by symbolic manipulation.

on the whole though, the difficulty depends on the school. If you go to a serious school and get hit with hard real analysis (rudin tier stuff) then it will be pretty difficult, atleast relative to the average math student's capabilities.

I did a minor in art, and I also got an EMT-B during a summer, which I sort of consider another minor. The art classes got me out of the math zone and in touch with some really cool people who are still my friends 3-4 years after I finished my degree (whereas I never talk to any of the people I met through my major). I also considered applying to medical illustration programs for a while, but ultimately decided it wasn't a direction I wanted to take.

The EMT was a cool experience and enabled me to work Friday nights letting chads puke into my bucket and reporting them over to the police.
