What makes an island an island?

Why is Australia considered a continent but Greenland isn't?

Is it by size or just arbitrary?

I thought Australia was part of Oceania along with like 14 other countries. I know nothing about geography though, so 99% sure I'm wrong.

What is root of minus four multiplied by root of minus 9?

There is this faggot teacher at my uni that keeps bugging us with this question.

From my point, in elementary school we would say, it does not exists as number, in high school it would be something like 2i * 3i = -6 and at uni it is still unidentified since we dont define "i" as square root of minus 1 but as i^2 = -1.

So what would be the most logical and simplified explanation of this?

Also, getting disappointed at narrow education and interest my teachers have. fucking hell.

That's how most complex analysis texts treat it.

Just like how you can't make zero a denominator because it has no multiplicative inverse in the field axioms.

Can someone knowledgeable explain why physicists prefer to do away with locality rather than realism when it comes to Bell's Theorem? What is actually meant by 'realism' anyway?
14 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>7751976
Abandoning "realism" would essentially mean abandoning science. "Realism" is the principle that something real exists - that there exist things with an existence independent of our own minds and representation schemes.

From Wikipedia:
The physicist's Realism is the claim that the world is in some sense mind-independent: that even if the results of a possible measurement do not pre-exist the act of measurement, that does not require that they are the creation of the observer (contrary to the "consciousness causes collapse" interpretation of quantum mechanics). Furthermore, a mind-independent property does not have to be the value of some physical variable such as position or momentum. A property can be dispositional (or potential), i.e., it can be a tendency: in the way that glass objects tend to break, or are disposed to break, even if they do not actually break. Likewise, the mind-independent properties of quantum systems could consist of a tendency to respond to particular measurements with particular values with ascertainable probability.

It makes a lot more sense to abandon locality than realism, favoring the pragmatical world than the immediate one. The world does not revolve around you.

Black is the absence of light.

Light needs to enter our eyes to see.

How then can we see black paint?

Are our eyes actually seeing black paint, or are they actually seeing the essence of the paint itself?

A question best left to philosophers.

Ethanol is a magical compound, you can find it labelled as "alcoholic", that's the government's method of saying "this drink will relax you and give you a good time".
You shouldn't question it's magic, but rather accept it.

it doesn't, it's poison.

Alright y'all fuck wads listen up. I found the solution to the energy crisis right here and I'm not even messing around.

So I got to thinking. What if we put a giant ass funnel in front of a wind turbine to make the wind all go right up in there like pic related. A flawless idea except for one thing. It's pretty fucking expensive to build giant ass funnels.

So I got a solution all up in here and it will be in the next picture.

Ba Boom.

You know that giant ass pole they all sit on? A big fucking pile of wasted potential. So we take that pile of waste and turn it into something useful. Straight up more effective windmills all up in here. Suck a dick geothermal energy, you just got pwned.

We cut it in half, flip it sideways, and make it catch that wind yo. It's gotta be concave and shit of course. But it sends that wind straight up in there.
>>
? There's no energy crisis since nuclear fission is a thing.
>>
You know windmills have brakes because they some times already cannot handle the amount of wind incoming? You're just gonna break it

Hello /sci/

Do we have any geologists here?

My friend gave me a piece of a rock. He tells me it's a piece of meteorite but I'm not sure. I think it looks a little too perfect, and it isn't magnetic. Is it a type of cannon ball or a ball used in a large tumbler or grinder? The pieces on the inside are quite brittle.

What is it?

Is listening to music while studying detrimental to your performance in studying?

I heard that music with vocals is detrimental and instrumental music actually enchances your performance. What do you know about this?

Who is this semen demon?
>>
>>7751269
Music with vocals is distracting anon. You try to read a book while you've got someone singing a catchy tune in the background and you're gonna have a bad time. It's like trying to count something while you've got someone yelling out random numbers at you (or even worse, counting something else out loud).
>>
>>7751269
I like to study in complete silence.
However, this is often hard to attain and so I find it helpful to listen to music since it removes any outside sources of noise. I found that the best kind is relaxing and repetitive piano music, such as Satie's Gymnopédies, since it's a nice but non-distracting background.
Songs, on the other hand, are way too distracting for me; at times I risk to start singing along instead of keep studying.

I have two. The best of the two was from the early 1940s.

I took one to a computer science final exam once, but I had a calculator for backup. That was in 1998 or so.

The T.A. picked it up and played with it for a few minutes. I don't think he knew how to use it.

Should I go into Life Science (specifically gentech/biochem) if I want to research biological immortality and cell regeneration and maybe cure some diseases in my spare time?

Since Artificial Intelligence and robotics are growing rapidly I think it's time we advance biological intelligence, cell / organic regeneration techniques also to compete against the machines. Why should they have parts that are easily replaceable and we shouldn't ? My superb intelligence could help humanity in this aspect.

Or should I give up the flesh and go full computer/A.I/robotic mode in the hope I can upload my mind to a machine in the near future ?

In which field should I put my mind to great use ?

I don't like the fact I'll die one day I think it's rather dull, so I have to stop the process. I'm just deciding which field is more promising. I hope you can help. I don't think Grey's will want to help me achieve my goals so I have to do it myself or with other scientists.
