Why are so many people obsessed with colonizing Mars?
Even if we can melt it's ice and make it warmer it's going to be losing atmosphere due to weak magnetosphere. And it's gravity is unhealthy for humans.

This is on the level of "what is the evolutionary advantage of [insert retarded shit here]"

Shoot some rocks at it. Boom more gravity
>>7761803
The low gravity on Mars makes it incapable of sustaining long term settlements of humans.

Hello I've recently discontinued the SSRI Lexapro after six years and show all the major symptoms of ssri deficiency including severe depression, anxiety, irritability, nausea, and dizziness and I was wondering if you guys had any insights about what I can do or take to help return my brain chemistry and mood to normal.

Talk to a psychiatrist you fucking tard.
>>7759389
I'd suggest going to /adv/ but this really seems like a topic for professional help OP. Maybe some more knowledgeable anons can pull through here or there, but still.
Obviously, I have talked to several doctors, psychiatrists, counselors, etc. More than 50 at least- I've lost count. None of them have helped me. They've made matters worse. This is a last resort. I had posted on the /adv/ as well.
Couldn't we combat Global Warming more realistically since countries like China won't be cutting down on carbon emissions? Could we build satellites around the earth that have the capability of expanding into huge platforms on an intermitent basis to block out the sun's rays temporarily to lower the Earth's temperature back down to an acceptable rate and just use those whenever the temperatures start getting to high? Maybe even build a permanent sun blocking structure over the ice poles to ensure they don't melt?
Could this be feasibly done if all countries worked together on a scientific method to slow and reverse global warming?
>>7757052
>like China won't be cutting down on carbon emissions?
Actually China is undertaking big efforts to switch to renewable energies. USA is the main problem.
>>7757052
Its better to deploy a cloud of smaller reflective things than one large expandable satalite
You could, but global warming isn't real so who gives a flying fuck?
Are universities getting dumbed down?
Is this even a question anymore?
>>7756366
What the fuck you talking about? I'm a CS major and university is hard as fuck. They force us to take math classes with letters instead of numbers and we have to write fizzbuzz programs. Only the smartest students can do this.

Sadly, lots of CS majors aren't far beyond that. I say this as a CS major.
How many logical fallacies can /sci/ make per post? Let's find out.

With the new semester looming over the horizon, let's get a study general thread started.

Hypothetically and theoretically what would happen if the United States blew up the moon? Nothing?
Also would it be bad or dangerous to test nuclear weapons on the surface of the moon?
>>7759807
>Hypothetically and theoretically what would happen if the United States blew up the moon?
Everyone would die.
>Also would it be bad or dangerous to test nuclear weapons on the surface of the moon?
It would be dangerous to get them there to test them. Rockets blow up a lot. But no, a nuclear explosion on the moon would not hurt anyone.

I always wondered if we could say predict what an alien language sounds like (phonetically) (if they speak one that is). Because our hearing is firstly limited to a certain set of frequencies and I am assuming that all languages do have a collection of similar sounds like the "b" sound.
So I have been wondering what would actually be found if someone was to do something like this. Obviously it would be a lot of work collecting sounds and grouping them according to the phonetic sounds.

The circumference of a circle is a function of the diameter where
C = dπ
In my diagram, x is a function of the circumference so that
x = kC for some coefficient k,
When d approaches infinite so does the circumference because if C = dπ and d approaches infinity then C = d.
so as C approaches infinity so does x because x = kC and because C approaches infinity
x = C.
So from that we get the notion that a circle with an infinite diameter is a straight line but...
Where does the rest of the circle go? Is it beyond infinity? Does it exist?

>When d approaches infinite so does the circumference because if C = dπ and d approaches infinity then C = d.
you can't say this
Hi--
I'm 20 years old and a math major at my local uni.
I've been lurking for a bit now but have not been compelled to post until recently; I took the IQ test on http://iqtest.dk/main.swf and got an IQ of 115 twice. My main issue is timing. I can usually work out the last piece of the matrix but my brain cannot process the entire test fast enough, I always end up guessing or missing questions towards the end.
Is there hope? Am I still at a phase in my development where my brain can change in ways that will give me the IQ points I need? Is neuroplasticity enough at this point?

Hey /sci/, what's everyone's opinion of the landau course? I'm thinking of taking the time to start from the beginning and read through. Worth the effort or is it a bit of a waste of time?
ohhh my god those books look sexy, maybe I'll start with the fluids one
Who wants to go on the journey with me? I'm going to take the plunge and try and read about 2 chapters a week (at least for the beginning). I'll be answering all the problems and would like another anon to answer them with me.
You need a solid understanding of physics already to even start these books.

Will machine learning ever be rigorous?
I have been working on it for a few years now and only until recently I have realized that most of it was empirical.
Except for things like graphical modeling, a lot of the methods are based on statistic with a few bits of simple Linear Algebra and Calculus.
Many of the papers published, even by profound labs from Google, Berkeley, Oxford, etc. seem to focus only on the numerical results rather than the underlying reasons. A method is good because the experiments on that dataset is good, period. They might introduce some subjective opinions in their papers about how it performed well. But, in the end of the day, they are still empirical.
I'm not saying that empirical models are not good. However, it seems like 99% of the "researchers" out there seem to only care about the results without giving too much thoughts about why their methods worked so well. Of course doing so would require a lot of mathematical background and they might lack that. But with the current train of empirical papers, I have a bad feeling that we might fall into the same pit as social studies (If we haven't already).
Somewhere along the line, I have a feeling that there must be an important and advanced mathematical models that ML can make use of. But, people are too busy feeding new datasets into their Neural networks to even bother polish their mathematical knowledge.
tl;dr: people keep treating ML tools as black box. The current trend is getting better datasets instead of improving the underlying mathematical model. We will get stuck sooner or later.
