Sup bros.

I'm a biology student, and I fucking hate life, and I mean this literally. I feel like I have looked into the abyss, and the abyss has looked back into me. I fucking hate animals. I hate living systems. I hate diversity. I hate conservation. I hate conservationists. I hate "sustainability". I especially hate vegans.

I actually love biology, I love the study of living systems, but I hate that the science has gotten so convoluted with the activism. Biologists, almost by definition, must be "in favor" of biodiversity, promoting biodiversity, promoting conservation of ecosystems, etc. I fucking hate it.

Now, my nihilism isn't unique, absolutely not. I don't consider myself a special snowflake in that sense, but I do consider myself a special snowflake in that I think I'm the only person in my department who would argue against conservation, for example. I'm like the only person who would write projects and give presentations where I argue *against* the two "traditional" cornerstones of modern academic biology--that of "yay to biodiversity!", and "yay to conservationism of that biodiversity!". And let me tell you, while arguing against conservation may be common among conservative and right-winged persons, a biologist against conservation is...not fucking heard of. It seems so counter-intuitive.

When considering enthalpy and entropy (you physics boys know what I'm talking about), there is no way in my opinion to view life as a "good" thing. I almost have the mentality of a comic book supervillian, who wants to "purify" the universe by eliminating all life. But the funny part is that *this is fucking true*. Life is all about reducing the free energy of a system, and of course increasing the entropy of the system, at the selfish expense of lowering/maintaining the entropy of its volume. Any way you slice it, especially in any moral context, is that life is fucking evil. It's evil, and how can life be allowed to continue unless it's okay to be evil? And what is natural selection but better systems at lowering enthalpy forcing inferior systems to become extinct?

Any way I fucking look at it, I hit pragmatic brick walls. For example, I have a simple project to work on, and I end up hitting this wall because I enter a series of feedback loops which conclude with "Fuck life." And I don't mean "fuck life" in a fatalist kind of way. I mean "fuck life" like "FUCK YOU ELEPHANTS, GO EXTINCT ALREADY", or "FUCK YOU PANDAS, AND MAY CHINAMEN USE YOUR BALLS FOR TRADITIONAL MEDICINE". I hate animals. Animals suck at lowering free energy. Fucking primates at Oak Ridge National Laboratory synthesized plutonium 238 the other day. THE AMOUNT OF FREE ENERGY LOST GOING INTO THAT BLOWS MY FUCKING MIND. As a biology student, an organism being able to produce plutonium 238...you don't get it. I study diatoms. I study algae and photosynthesis. Photosynthesis ultimately produces sugar. My diatoms and algae produce sugars. And these fucking primates at Oak Ridge produced plutonium 238. When I look at this outside of the box...I can't stop thinking that humans are the greatest shit since sliced bread.

Who cares about some fucking tropical tree frog that's going to go extinct? WHO CARES?! PRIMATES CREATED PLUTONIUM 238. PRIMATES CREATED THIS SUPER AWESOME NVIDIA GPU I HAVE. Like...the magnificience of primates is...unparalleled. And as a biologist, having this mentality is, in all honestly, detrimental to my future career. In a way, other biologists don't take me seriously. Why should they? They have no obligation to take me seriously even if I, along with many others, are correct in our views. The sun will end most life on Earth in around 1 billion years--not when the sun becomes a red giant, but far earlier, when the surface temperature raises but enough degrees to cause protein denaturation to be thermodynamically favorable. That isn't a high temperature. That's less than boiling point, even 80 degrees or so would kill most multicellular life on Earth's surface. Who cares about biodiversity when it's going to end? But who cares, since what matters is *now*, and not the future? But if sustainability is maintaining the "now" into the future, then sustainability is a moot point.

This shit is just fucking bothering me, and I need to tell someone because no one gives a fuck. And you guys don't give a fuck, but at least I got this off my chest for now...until this post falls off page 10, and contributes to the increased entropy and future heat death of the universe. The greatest trick life ever pulled was making everyone think it was a circle. There is no circle. It's a god damned straight line, and you're hobbling around with a broken leg think it's a circle. God, I hate life.

I sound like a fucking child.

Is it possible for decision trees to split a set of data into subsets where the sum of the entropies (weighted respectively) of each subset will be greater than the original entropy of the set?

I know its a bit contrived, but can there be a scenario where I would need to worry about negative information gain?

Or will this not be a problem and all I have to do is plug and chug and only minimize entropy after, without worrying about its relationship to entropy before?

A friend of mine said "I think we shouldn't invest in space exploration while there are hunger people on the world". How do I answer her?
15 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>7756882
By that logic we shouldn't be doing anything BUT feeding the hungry people.
>>
>>7756882
"why are you still feeding your kids as tons of people needs their food a lot more ?"
Or, in a more rational way, "are these mutually exclusive or hindering each other ?"
>>
her point of view is naive

in the short term, not spending money on other things and spending it on hungry people helps the problem, but only temporarily and for as long as you continue to do it

in the long term, spending money on technology and exploration results in advances which reduce the amount of hungry people permanently, while also improving the well being and living conditions of everyone else permanently

if the people who made decisions were as naive as her, we'd still be living in the dark ages with many, many more hungry people and needless and senseless death all around us.

Just abolish CS as a major, and instead make it a specialization within either maths or physics, for students who have taken all the basic courses.
>>
>>7756626
All those classes are great and all, but there is a finite amount of time one can spend in school. You can't cover all the math topics you listed, only around half of them and slightly touch on the others. It would be a 5-6 year degree for an undergraduate if you followed your requirements.

My question is, are you and your fellows prepared for the mind control renaissance?

Did anyone know that if you fall into a black hole, and if somebody were to watch it happen, all they see would be you touching the horizon and then the image of your body will appear to be frozen like a computer screen, then your body would fade away until they can't see you anymore? They wouldn't be able to see you actually enter the black hole. Any other cool facts or any thoughts?

Can we take a moment to discuss the prospect of nanotechnology?

We have plenty of art forms depicting this new, very possibly revolutionary idea. Science fiction is usually just hints for what's next, as we've seen over time.

Share your ideas, concerns, concepts around laws of dynamics and such. This is something, I believe, we should really focus on.
