> people still think Freud was bad and didn't engage in the best practice of his time

A lot of Freud's work in his approach to psychoanalysis, and I recommend strongly here reading "Introduction to Psychoanalysis" compiled from his lectures, played a seminal role in framing the scientific method in psychology, and in delineating sharply empirical methods from the predominantly romantic conception of the psyche that existed until then. While several of Freud's conclusions were fault, any form of rigorous psychology would have been difficult or long delayed without the foundations he set, and his observations that there unseen machinations of consciousness largely holds true today too.

An outdated "psychologist", but not a bad one or an incompetent one by any means, no more than Newton was a bad physicist or Boyle was a bad chemist.

John William Money.

Thought up gender identity being separate from biological sex. Convinced parents of newborn twins to reassign one of the boys into a girl. Then rause the baby as a girl. Had the boy twin dry hump his twin "sister", to reinforce gender identity. The sister eventually killed himself in his 30s.

If you look at our existence, what are the chances that you say that starting from literally nothing, one obtains an object capable of typing on a keyboard and communicating with another object to ask him if god exists?

You'd probably say it's impossible. And yet ...

Are there legitimate medical reasons for routine childhood circumcision, or is it just a cultural practice that hasn't died out yet?

If there are no good medical reasons for ritual circumcision, why hasn't the medical community called for this practice to be banned?

There's no legit medical reason.

The practice is intended to "hide the Jew" and reduce pleasure during sex.

Because Jews are in control of it.

What is going on in the answer for exercise 3-7 (page 54 of the PDF)? When I saw the question I got an algebraic mess because I squared both sides and tried to see what would happen.

Why is he allowed to say in the answer, "Tee-hee, "z plus or minus a"? Wouldn't the minus be implied to be in the value of a?

Why does he casually mention that a could be complex? Why is this allowed? It never happened before.

Srsly, I'm not sure if I should continue if this shit continues. If I want to git gud at applied maths, is Kreyszig good? It seems like a lot of easy questions are in that. What do you recommend?

I have a very dumb question. Hopefully somebody will enlighten me.

I have this conception that whenever one studies not only one gets more proficient at the subject (complexity becomes more and more familiar) which, according to blain plasticity, one’s mind gets more accustomed to doing said task.

Now I don’t know much (barely know anything) about the brain, but is one harming the brain when you submit it to studying? What is happening to neurons? Are the connections strengthening? Does the brain die a little whenever you submit it to a rigorous task?

Or is it the contrary? Is the brain becoming ‘’healthier’’? If so, what does healthier mean?

How much is too much? And what does this head pain mean? (Besides that I should stop studying for the day)
I know this entire deal is very dumb, I am dumb. But I want to know more.

Please respond.

It's not really the answer to your question, but in general: Studying/thinking/concentrating is fairly labour intensive and concentration/motivation is a limited resource. You also might have forgotten to drink enough water, you might just be in need of a snack.

You're not harming yourself, no.

>You're not harming yourself

This is whats unclear to me. Because I am pretty sure I once read something about how (and what I will say its all fuzzy because I barely remember it) whenever one studies there's this acid and that apparently ''damages'' the neuronal connections.

Now I remember the people on said thread related this last problem with lack of exercise. But this also kept me wondering about the effects of ''using'' the brain and learning new stuff.

For some reason I am really fixated with the idea that, at some degree, such effort or product doesn't come without exchanging anything, hence the brain would have to give something in order to achieve it. Thats why I asked if we ''died'' a little whenever we studied.

"material physics" is chemistry

So, think of jobs a chemist would take. Most obvious examples would be working quality control inside a plastics or fertilizer factory, or being an FDA inspector. Luckier ones work as R&D people, who spend their time cooking up plastics or fertilizers and testing them. This is where your middle school study of the scientific method comes into direct use.

Better jobs are for fuel companies (ie, Exxon), industrial suppliers (ie, companies that make lubricant for power plant turbines and coolant for transformers), or defense contractors (especially in regards to metallurgy).

Remember that employers want to see real-life examples of your work in their field of work. This means home science experiments like comparing and contrasting different formulas of corn-based plastics, tin (can be made with a DIY furnace), or propane. Note that having experience with mechanical engineering (especially diesel engines or welding) might be very useful depending on where you want to work.

ITT We finally settle the debate. We've pretty much settled which analysis' textbooks are the best, but when it comes to Linear Algebra there's not much love for a single or a couple of texts.
State your pick and your reason.

I'll start, Linear Algebra - Hoffman and Kunze, it's a traditional approach to linear algebra which I think is preferable to for example LADR, it covers a lot of more advanced topics, rigorous and is perfectly fine as an introductory book.

You're free to also pick this and/or add more reasons.

For mathematics student, German books like the one from Volker Mehrmann is pretty straigtforward and comprehensive. There's an english translation.

Some weeks ago the idea of making a daily math challenge thread gained popularity and then a guy started doing it, first with a problem about circles and then a problem about an integral with circles. Unfortunately he stopped, but I am here to save it.

Here is Today's problem:

Suppose that a sequence [math] a_1 , a_2 , a_3 , ... [/math] of positive real numbers satisfies:

[math] a_{k+1} \geq \frac{k a_k}{ (a_k)^2 + k - 1} [/math] for every positive integer [math] k [/math].

Prove that [math] a_1 + a_2 + ... + a_n \geq n [/math] for every [math] n \geq 2 [/math]

RULES:
1) If you have a proof, show full work. This means that:
2) The method of proof of leaving it as an exercise for the reader is invalid, for even the most trivial detail of your proof.
3) Everyone welcome, which means
4) You may tackle this problem in any way you see fit. The most elementary and the most complex methods will be praised equally.
5) When you post your solution, also tell us your major. Just for fun.
6) If you do not understand any detail of the problem, feel free to ask questions
7)Latex is encouraged but pictures of handwriting are also okay.

>>

Great first equation.

First, there is no a0, our first term is a1. But that is not important.

Regarding the heart of your question, to solve this problem you do not need to know the first term. The "hard" part of the statement is that you need to prove that for ANY arbitrary first term, the theorem holds.

So for your proof you will have to assume an arbitrary a1 and prove it like that.
