What is the difference between knowledge and intelligence? Is there one at all? How can someone be classified as a retard if he doesn't know how to write for example?

Pic unrelatet... or maybe it isn't?

I don't know if who made that picture but they're fucking retarded if they think that was real
>>

Intelligence is the ability
Knowledge is the data.
You can have a lot of ability, but lack the data to use it to your fullest potential.
>>
>>8566029
Slow down there peasant. This board is supposed to be intelligent you know..

Saying "no way" about something you have no clue about is a big redflag for being a low IQ.

Eh? There's a major black swan tier loss on the left.

Is it possible to publish math research if you have a PhD in an applied field, such as biomedical science?
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8565746
Theoretically possible? Yes. I know a handful of examples of non-PhD papers even off hand (the AKS primality test was a pajeet undergrad research project)

But you are almost certainly not going to be intellectually qualified to publish new mathematics without a graduate degree in it, especially in the modern era. Not to mention that you've spent all your time getting a PhD in something else instead of learning math.
>>
>>8565763

Then why do so many people on /sci/ teach themselves math? What's their endgame if it's not to contribute to the field?

For context, I'm applying for a PhD in pharmacology because the industry prospects are bretty güd, but /sci/'s boner for math makes me worried that I'm taking the easy route. I assumed I could learn math as a hobby and know how to publish by the time I finished grad school.
>>
>>8565772
I don't think most people think about the endgame, they just want to learn math

you can learn math as a hobby, but you need to be really anal about it. it's like learning guitar I guess, you can't be the guy that learns guitar as a hobby and is decent-ish and has a shitty band, you need to be the guy that becomes a highly technical virtuoso player by spending hours on end practicing

>Venus has too much atmosphere and is too hot
>Mars has too little atmosphere is too cold
Could we just smash Venus into Mars or vice versa and get a planet with a happy medium? Mars has a lot of iron, so would that iron sink to the core of this new planet and create a magnetic field?

Let's just spin Venus up to a 24 hour day, and that will fling off most of the atmosphere, then we just pack it in a big balloon over to Mars. Boom, 3 planets instead of 2, and we don't have to wait for any lava to cool down.

It's not about the time, it's about the efficiency. The main reason we haven't put a base on the moon or a man or Mars yet isn't because it takes too long, it's because it's too expensive

Is it true that people consider EE autists? Why?
15 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Depends on the department/area of focus. People who specialize in electronics are weird/autismal but for example the telecommunications people are kinda "cool". Control engineering where I'm at is a mix between the two extremes I guess.
>>
>>8563991
This is autistic.
So you're saying I can have a normal conversation, fuck a good amount of women, but then one day someone asks what major I'm in and if I say "EE" I'm autistic? Makes sense.

Anyways, CS has the most amount of autists in it, always taking about Star Wars and making jokes about stupid shit.

What would the implications be if someone were to find and release a solution to Navier-Stokes?

Imagine such a solution works for compressible fluids and all viscosity profiles. Also presume that the general solution isn't some fuckhuge summation but is rather a plug and chug formula for finding fluid behavior at (x, y, z, t). What all fields would be affected, and how?

"General solutions" to PDEs like this one aren't really a thing, some sort of boundary conditions or symmetries have to be specified, since PDEs depend on arbitrary functions.

In any case, finding a practical, useful solution to the equations is not the Navier Stokes problem. Proving the existence, uniqueness, and continuity/differentiability of solutions is, which is a great deal trickier.
>>
>>8561615
Of course, you make up boundary conditions to start with and work from there. With that, you can find very close and consistent approximations for the turbulent effects that happen in real fluids.

I'm talking Navier-Stokes as it applies to physics and how much of science would be uprooted if a computer could find and model true fluid behavior just by plugging in the numbers. I imagine a lot of otherwise insoluble problems in physics could be solved if fluids didn't have to be dealt with using weeks of calculations on clusters of supercomputers.

Can AI make art that humans will appreciate and buy?
45 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
One day? Yes.

The magic reasoning that anything humans do can't be replicated and improved by an intelligent enough AI is foolish.
>>
>>8560939
Op here.
I want to be an artist but have no talent.
Im studying CS and wonder if i can still be an artist.
>>
>>8560951
You'd have to have a background in the arts to be able to teach an AI the concept of aesthetics as it applies to art.

In faxt, I hate to say it, but AI will hit a dead end if STEM continues to refuse the legitimacy of everything outside itself. A human like AI will need the help of the soft sciences to become a reality.

i'd say engineering uses as much math if not more (useful) math than a mathematics degree.

when /sci/ talks about engineers, they mean architects

I guess the main reason to do math is if you REALLY like it, same reason you'd major in art i guess

Two weeks ago I got the interview for an internship at the job of my dreams. I thought it went well, but at the end one of the people on the panel asked me "what happens if you are driving at the speed of light and turn your headlights on?" I kind of froze up, I started trying to come up with something but they stood up and said "don't worry about it, you'll hear back from us soon" and shook my hand. WTF should I have said? Pretty sure I just threw away the opportunity of a lifetime.
