For the purposes of science fiction, what would be the most convincing way to send information backwards through time? I've done some light research and (if I'm being generous) I've picked up a cursory understanding of popular quantum physics, but I'm not able to articulate a satisfying method for a time-traveling file transfer.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Today's challenge is to prove that every [math] m \times n [/math] rectangle, where m<n and on every line we have a permutation of the numbers [math] \{ 1, 2, ... n \} [/math] such that on every column there is at most one occurrence of each number from 1 to n can be extended by adding more lines until we obtain an [math] n \times n [/math] square.

This is known as extending a Latin rectangle into a Latin square.
106 posts and 17 images submitted.
>>
this seems trivial unless you put some restrictions on what the extended square looks like
>>
>>8571623
how is this not obvious?
>>
>>8571649
>how is this not obvious?
addendum: if i understand the problem correctly then just start with 1, 2, ..., n and for every new line push all numbers to the right and put the last number on the first spot.

If there are an infinite amount of universes, then shouldn't their also be an infinite amount of universes that have discovered inter-dimensional travel and made contact with us?

From Gauss' Law, the electric field above an infinite plane is [math]\vec{E} = \frac{\sigma}{2\epsilon_{0}}[/math]. Can the same result be found by summing the electric fields from each charge on a grid, to infinity? For a charge density of [math]1\frac{C}{m^{2}}[/math], the result should be the same for [math]1C[/math] charges [math]1m[/math] apart on a grid, but I don't see how the [math]\frac{1}{r^{2}}[/math] relationship vanishes by summing charges. Is this kind of a sum for the field even valid?
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Not exactly, but in the limit as you get much farther away from the grid than the spacing between points on the grid, they will become indistinguishable.

Are you familiar with the multipole expansion?
>>
>>8574526
No, can it be used to express the combination of all the charges' contributions?
>>
>>8574532
Multipole expansion is essentially binomial expansion of the Coulomb potential (at least in the case of electrostatics). Each successive term describes a finer effect of the exact charge distribution than the last. Most problems in electrostatics aren't exactly solvable, but can be approximated to arbitrary accuracy using this method and a computer.

In this case, most of the latter terms would be expected to die if you measure the field a far enough distance away. But as you get closer, the percentage that the higher terms contribute to the shape of the field will increase dramatically and reveal the true shape. I don't know what the solution looks like close by, but it definitely varies largely based on what part of the 'square' you are above.

And happy new year. I wish I had something else to do besides be on /sci/

Hey, /sci/ /v/ here my friend and I are arguing over the chances of a loot crate giving a specific skin in our game. There's a 1% drop rate for this skin in each crate. We know a third person that opened up 200 loot crates each with a 1% chance of getting this skin. He didn't get it.

Now i say there was only a statistical chance of 2 out of the 200 crates that would have contained the skin but my friend says 13%

i haven't done this kind of math since high school and can't remember how to figure any of it out

who's right?

I would like !y paper to be peer reviewed but there are alot of junk science websotes that only want my money and doesnt care about my work. I have it on a word document and its free to read amd critique. I also want to start a buisness in tbe future and be a rock star because im a cool guy. The eagle is here because eagles are cool

How accurate are IQ measurements in the sense of converting grade level to mental age and then dividing by chronological age?

If a pupil in the 1st grade (age 6) has the verbal ability of a 5th grader (age 10) and the mathematical ability of a 3th grader (age 8) - thus resulting in overall ability of an 4th grader (age 9) this gives an overall IQ score of 155

Source:
http://www.vcbconsulting.com/gtworld/iqgrade.html

Will this score be consistent throughout the lifespan? Will this lead to scores of 145-160 on actual IQ tests?

I don't know OP
Was IQ originally intended to do this?
Oh wait. The answer is yes.
This is a perfect example of where it could be applied exactly as designed you stupid fucking twat.

>Trusting IQ as a reliable predictor of individual success.
IQ tests are only really useful when considered on the societal level.

please don't reproduce
I met many retarded people in my years on this site but you easily made it into the top 10 with this
you actually don't understand shit, so please let me give you this one advice, and please take it:
you are horribly stupid and it hurts, don't ever try to spread the shit you believe to know about anything ever again.

now please try to think about the shit you're telling us here for at least 5 minutes and maybe you find the giant flaws in your logic all by yourself.
no one is here to give you private lessons. Maybe google "How do IQ tests work?".
if you still don't get it then, just kill yourself

Light is a wave (in this model) and waves interfere. Think about tossing two stones in a still lake at the same time. The ripples interfere with each other and make cool patterns. Light does the same thing. Cool.

In order to make waves, we need a medium. Sound waves have air, waves in a string have the string, water waves have the water, the list goes on. It stands to reason that light has a medium, so we call this the aether. Since the Earth is moving through space, it stands to reason that it is moving through the aether such that we should feel an aethereal wind. Cool.

This apparatus splits the light into two beams and then interferes it with itself. Cool.

Each beam is affected by the aether differently, so we should be able to detect which way the aether is moving based on the interference we see. Cool.

The interference pattern was the pattern we expect from a "still pond" i.e. no aethereal wind. From this, the aether model lost merit and now our models don't include it and we view light as having no medium. Cool.

This agrees with the bizarre result Maxwell's equations give: light travels at the same speed in a vacuum regardless of reference frame. Cool.

You can't just plot random points in geologic history on a logarithmic scale and expect it to tell you something about the future
>>
>>8573367
How did you manage not to get a straight line when you use 2 time the same scale ?
Why is industrial Revolution dated in the XVth century ?
Why did your plot need to precise "logarithmic" ?
Why isn't there any sources ?
Why is the planet behind the plot not the Earth ?
Why this meme subject ?
Why is this graph obviously taken from history channel or any other garbage information network trying to do science ?

Too much of a bait to be serious, you are a but a faggot op, and your oc is pollution for the spirit. Please stop posting this kind of thread.
