I need more songs like this.

During my college years, I spent my summers working at a camp for the disabled. The counselors were beholden to three rules when it came to codes of conduct: 1) No Sex On Camp Grounds 2) No Drugs on Camp Grounds 3) No Alcohol on Camp Grounds. Nearly everyone broke the first rule, of course. It makes sense, to be sure. Spend your entire day dealing with Nature's mistakes, being spit, pissed and puked on, of seeing madness and misery, and one wants to experience something like human warmth in order to restore something like sanity.

Now, I think I was the only one of my coworkers not to break this particular rule over my four years of employment. Each night the couples would rush off to some dark place they knew they wouldn't be discovered, and I was left with nothing but the light of a campfire guttering out and bad memories. So I would go to my car and retrieve the bottle of liquor I kept secreted in the trunk, wander off to the cabin reserved for the "music and drama" classes we taught, and begin to drink myself to sleep on a couch stained by the piss of the campers who had sat on it. And I would listen to the music of Tom Waits.

One summer, I listened to the album "Alice" almost exclusively.

However, regardless of how drunk I was, I would wake with a start whenever this song began to play and immediately skipped it:

I could endure the Waits' songs about circus freaks and derelicts. But a sad, simple little song about impossible love was just far too much. It was far easier to live life down in the cold and dark of the ocean if I could pretend that there was no sky and stars above. It was more bearable to sleep alone if I could drink myself to the point where I forgot I was the only one each summer doing so. It hurt far too much to be reminded that affection exists, no less than it would pain the things that dwell in the sea's abyss if they knew that, although there was light, they would never see it.
