Anyone into this?

Made my own whoopie slings, adjustable ridgeline, continuous loops, soft shackles.

Got a Q tho for anyone in the know - what length of bury do I need for a locked brummel on 1.8 and 2.2mm dyneema cord? It's not going to be critical load bearing so I was thinking of doing short ones (3''?)

I can do 3 core rope but not the stuff pictured in OP.

Generally make my own dog leashes etc.

3 core rope?

I swear /out/ is a bunch of gear-whores. As soon as it's not shiny sharpened steel or branded clothing that you fags can argue about, no one cares.

Splicing is a legit skill, everyone who hammock camps would benefit from learning it,

Soft shackles are light weight and super handy, basically a legit replacement for a carabiner in 9/10 camping applications

Whoopie sling, if you don't want to tie knots ever again when you hang your hammock this is the shit you want to know.

Which one, and why?

Highest priced brando I've seen.

I got carbon fiber Hi-Tec on sale for $25us/pr. VERY light!

I still prefer my single one piece.
>>
>>928357
Leki used to be good but the last one I had sucked because it would collapse during use. I only use one pole and put some weight on it

I switched to Black Diamond flick locks and haven't had any problems.
>>
>hello. I am so fucking retarded I would like to pay 100 dollars for a stick.

gearfags piss me off, but people who actually buy hiking poles astound me.

also, just go hike a trail. people realize hiking poles are fucking useless and throw them in the bushes.

half my car camping set up is from discarded random camping crap I found in national forests.

AYO sc/out/s HARSH CLIMATE STORIES THREAD

I frequent /lit/ and /out/ and there is an author by the name of Cormac McCarthy that is obsessed with the climate and geography of the South West - specifically the Texas-Mexico border area. If you've seen No
Country for Old Men its the guy who wrote teh book behind the film.

I've spent time inna Adirondacks and select Pacific Islands, not exactly the most punishing environments.

What stories do you have about Mother Nature and her apathy towards your wellbeing? General harsh climate thread.

you ever fart so loud you shut down the woods?

this morning I woke up to birds chirping and ehat I can only assume was a raccoon trying to get into my beans and rum.

and then I announced my awakening with a trumpet blast.

the whole woods went silent for about 5 seconds. it was majestic.

I was touring Crystal Cave near Sequoia NP with my 10 y/o step-daughter and kept teasing her when they turned out the lights I was going to fart

>LIGHTS OUT

>PPPPPPPHHHHHHHHUURRREEETTT!!!!!!!

>furious leg kicking by 10 y/o

>guide: ok, ok imagine if....
>secondary shock wave
>PPHHHRRReeetttttt!!!

>guide: ok, forget it...

/out/, do you sometimes feel looked inside civilisation? like earth is no longer big enough, because there are no more white spots on the maps and there is no longer any place to go to that is truely solitary, truely unexplored, truely YOURS, at your hands, to be transformed into whatever YOU deem to be best? anywhere i go, even if it is the most remote corner of sibiria or whatever, there is always somone, some gouvernment, laws, police, politics, people, the abhorrent safety-net of civilisation in general.
i do feelt trapped sometimes, it's like some kind of cabin fever. there's no frontier anymore, no place to PUSH.

do any of you ever have to cope with that feel?

Iconic Sequoia 'Tunnel Tree' Brought Down By California Storm

A powerful winter storm in California has brought down an ancient tree, carved into a living tunnel more than a century ago.

The "Pioneer Cabin Tree," a sequoia in Calaveras Big Trees State Park, saw horses and cars pass through it over the years. More recently, only hikers were allowed to walk through the massive tree.

Over the weekend, a powerful winter storm slammed into California and Nevada, prompting flooding and mudslides in some regions. The Associated Press reports it might be the biggest storm to hit the region in more than a decade.

On Sunday, a volunteer at the state park reported that Pioneer Cabin had not survived.

Good evening, /out/

I'm going to be that guy now. Which I never thought I'd be.

My grandfather is in hospital right now, he'll probably make it through the night, but after that predictions are sketchy at best. Probably not a question of weeks, probably days.

Aneurysm of the aorta, burst blood vessel, that sort of thing. So the prognosis is not good.

This man raised me (due to the absence of a dad) to be a real man, with /out/doorsing and such. Gave me my first pocket knife (pic related of the type - though I lost the real one when I was like 12), with the only instructions being "cut away from yourself", taught me angling, woodworking, sawing, basic auto repair - you name it.

To quote friends of my soon-to-be-wife, it's surprising I'm such an adequate, manly and even gentlemanly man, despite growing up without a father. But that's no surprise, that's just my grandpa, without him I'd be a useless pussy.

And now it looks like I'm about to lose him, and soon. I've had a talk with him, and nothing has been left unsaid, I've told him he's been more of a father to me than anyone else ever would have, and he's said if there's one thing he's happy about it's how I turned out - but still.

This fucking hurts. My mother is out of the country, haven't told her yet, and my grandmother (whom I also love dearly) has a heart condition, so I'm trying to ease her into it.

If I don't get a call from the hospital tonight, I'll call tomorrow morning, check how it all is, and probably bring my grandmother there & take him home for... no one knows how long.

My gf is lovely, but this is all a bit much to lay on her. I have no siblings, and my mother was his only child, so this is all on me now.

Hold me, /out/. This is not a good moment.

First so sorry, there are no words from me to comfort you, but I can offer support.

Second tell your mom and his wife now! You two may have nothing left unsaid, but you are keeping that from them.

All the best, anon.
>>
I just lost my grandmother whom I was very close to so I know a similar pain that you are feeling. Remember all those times you spent together while you were growing up? Those aren't going away just because your grandpa is leaving. They happened and they made you who you are, and you shaped the man he became as well. You have to remember that he loves you, and just because he won't be here forever doesn't mean that the love is leaving too.
You can get through this, and I sincerely hope you know that he is as comfortable as possible and knows that you care so much for him.
>>
>>926772
Sorry to hear that, anon. It's how life works and none of us will be here forever, make sure he is comfortable and try to be on his side when time comes.
You'll always have the memories of you two together, be strong.

I'll be here probably all night so if you want to share fell free to do so.

I have a national park 6 hours drive from where I live where I love to go hiking. This year I'm planning on making a permanent settlement there, off the beaten track and hidden from rangers. It's going to be as unnoticeable as possible to avoid curious souls from creeping about. I'm thinking about using a natural cave formation and widen it out using rocks to create walls, then cover it with moss so it looks natural and becomes as stable as possible.

I will also make depots around the park where I place dry goods and spices as a backup in case my place gets raided by people or animals, or if I get stuck in bad weather while out hiking.

If I can get the place set up in time I plan to winter there and attempt to do some fur trapping and use the paleolithic fall pits to hunt reindeer.

The thing that worries me is not if I can succeed or not. I've done several similar projects (although all of them during the summer season). I'm worried that I'll be prosecuted later on if I decide to write a book or make a film about the project. How likely is it that the park officials will react, and how should I deal with it or prevent it? Any ideas?

There is a reason for the caveman dragging a woman by the hair back to his cave meme.

Enjoy sexing yourself for a year.
>>
>>926444
if you;re worried about prosecution my suggestion would be to NOT change the physical construct of this cave. Building 'walls' sounds a retarded way to get yourself buried alive. Not sure what your moss comment is about either.

How you gonna hide the smoke from your fire?

Hey everyone! So my wife and I are kicking around the idea of relocating in the somewhat near future. We're currently in southeast MO, have a small farm on a handful of acres and are slowly becoming more self sufficient. As we get our finances in order we're beginning to plan for a new house, but aren't quite sure whether or not we want to stay in Missouri. We're considering the northwest. Wyoming, North Dakota, etc. Our most important considerations are a cold climate, very little gov oversight and regulations, and land that would allow us to sustain ourselves. What states would everyone recommend?

Look around the Salmon River Mountains in Idaho. Very cold but has nice summers to be able to grow lots of potatoes and other crops.
>>
>>926288
The northwest is full. Try Wisconsin or the UP.
