While most animals tend to mate with members of the same species, researchers have captured the bizarre moment two very different animals became intimate.

Video footage shows a Japanese macaque male mating with a female Sika deer.

This is only the second time two animals of unrelated species have been seen mating, since a fur seal was filmed mating with a king penguin in 2014.

The strange situation was captured by researchers from the University of Strasbourg in France, while filming on Yakushima Island south of Japan.

Japanese macaques comfortably live side-by-side with Sika deer, and the deer often eat food that the monkeys have dropped, or even monkey faeces.

While some macaques have been seen grooming the deer or riding them in a playful manner, they have never before been known to mate.

But in November 2015, researchers observed a healthy adult male macaque attempt to copulate with at least two different female Sika deer by performing sexual mounts on the animals' backsides.

Alexandre Bonnefoy, co-author of the study, said: 'The male mounted the deer and displayed some copulation behaviours, which included about 15 sexual movements over a period of 10 seconds, before dismounting.

'Ejaculation seemed to have occurred as the deer licked the seminal liquid after the mount.

'This might indicate that the sperm could be a good source of protein to the deer.'

While the macaque did seem to ejaculate, the researchers note that penetration did not occur, as the penis was directed at the back and not the genital area of the deer.

The researchers suggest that it might be explained by the difference in the build and size of the animals involved.

The male monkey also tried to mount a second female deer, but without any success.

She attempted to escape, and tried to get rid of the monkey by moving faster, turning around and displaying threatening behaviour.

The monkey went on to display a form of mate-guarding behaviour in that he chased other peripheral males away from the deer under his watch.

The researchers believe the hormonal surge experienced by the Japanese macaques during breeding season and the close cooperation between these primates and Sika deer culminated in this copulation behaviour between two unrelated species.

Marie Pelé who led the study, said: 'It could also be a sexual manifestation of the known play behaviour between Japanese macaques and the deer they are known to sometimes ride.'

This is the second time that animals of unrelated species have been seen mating.

In 2014, an Antarctic fur seal was seen coercing king penguins into sexual relations in Antarctica.

But according to lead author Ms Pelé, the interaction observed in Japan differed from the Antarctic case, as it involved sexual interaction without penetration, and also included mate guarding by the monkey.

Scientists on Tuesday revealed the "highly unusual" behaviour of a male monkey filmed trying to have sex with female deer in Japan—a rare case of inter-species nookie.
Sex between animals from different species is uncommon, but exceptional cases are known to occur, chiefly in domesticated and captive animals, scientists reported in the journal Primates.
Mating is usually driven by the need to procreate, while sex across the species line is mostly fruitless or yields sterile offspring.
For the new study—only the second on the phenomenon of inter-species sex—a Japanese macaque or "snow monkey" was filmed mounting at least two female Sika deer much larger than itself.
Without penetration, the young monkey makes sexual movements while riding on the does' backs on Japan's Yakushima Island.
On some occasions its impertinence was tolerated but at other times the deer bolted and ran. The monkey ejaculated on the backs of the does, which licked the seminal fluid, researchers said.
"No ambiguity is possible, it is clearly sexual behaviour," study co-author Marie Pele of the University of Strasbourg, France, told AFP.
Furthermore, the monkey appeared to "guard" the targets of its affection, chasing away other male macaques.
The scientists speculated the behaviour may be driven by "mate deprivation" in a community where competition for females is stiff, boosted by a surge of hormones in the breeding season.
"Sometimes young males, like the one in the study, do not have access to females in their social group as these are claimed by older males," said Pele.
"This young macaque... did not have access to females, but was very excited. It took advantage of the presence of the doe."

Snow monkeys and Sika deer live in close proximity at Yakushima—the deer eat food the monkeys drop from the trees, and sometimes feed on their faeces.

The team said further study is necessary to understand the origins of interspecies sexual behaviour, including zoophilia—when humans are sexually attracted to animals.
The only other published scientific study on inter-species sexual behaviour was the much-publicised 2014 report of fur seals forcing themselves on penguins in Antarctica, the authors said.

Hiring naked women to clean your house is now an option for Londoners.

The London-based home cleaning company Naturist Cleaners is offering £65 an hour to have nude ladies clean private homes.

The cleaners will show up with gloves and slippers – and nothing else.

There are three services: With the client nude, with the cleaner nude, or both.

"I must stress that the cleaners are completely nude. They clean properly, they are not pretending. So the client is getting the benefit of a nice experience and a professional clean for an hour or for however much is paid for."

>Notting Hill Carnival poses a "real risk to public safety" and in 2016 saw four stabbings so serious the victims nearly died, according to a report.

>The event - at which 450 arrests were made last year - must be made safer, London's mayor has been warned.

>It is one of Europe's largest carnivals with up to 7,000 police on duty, 50,000 performers and a million visitors. The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee said overcrowding and a rise in violent crime were the main issues.

Does anyone else find it ironic that a carnival set up to showcase the best of black culture and creativity and improve relations between London's black community and everyone else is under threat due to violent crime committed by nigs?

I live there, this problem is overhyped. 450 arrests in a crowd of 1 million plus shows how well behaved most people are. Now I've never found the carnival that much fun, but a lot of people do. You do get some housing estate savages but they shouldn't ruin the fun for everyone else. Besides if they said they'd ban it people would still go there and have a carnival. There is literally no way to stop it, the whole danger thing is really overhyped.

A Florida man is accused of having sex with his dog -- abuse that may have been going on for years. Bradley Jean Hubbard was arrested after a family member called deputies to report sexual abuse of "Baby Girl," the family's pit bull.

The unnamed family member, "could not take it anymore" after seeing Hubbard take the dog to his room to have sex with it. She reportedly told deputies the abuse had happened more than 100 times over the last three years.

Investigators subsequently took Baby Girl to a veterinarian, who determined the dog's genitals showed signs of abuse, according to a newspaper report.

Hubbard, 23, now faces charges of engaging in sexual acts with an animal and causing the pain, suffering, or death of an animal. He has since been released on $15,000 bond.

Jail records show Hubbard has several prior arrests on charges including battery, larceny, and resisting arrest.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/17/world/africa/nigerian-jet-mistakenly-bombs-refugee-camp-killing-dozens.html

>DAKAR, Senegal — A Nigerian fighter jet searching for Boko Haram members on Tuesday accidentally bombed a camp for displaced people who had fled the militants, killing dozens of camp residents and at least six humanitarian workers, and wounding numerous others.

>The bombing struck a government-run camp in Rann, Nigeria, near the Cameroonian and Chadian borders, an area where Boko Haram had recently increased attacks.

>Government officials could not provide an exact death toll, saying they were focused on treating the wounded. Doctors Without Borders, the medical charity, said its teams in Rann had counted 52 dead and 200 wounded as they tried to provide first aid and stabilize patients who were awaiting evacuation.

>But there was little hope of evacuation until Wednesday, raising the prospect that many seriously wounded victims of the attack would die overnight as ill-equipped rescuers stood by helplessly.

>The Nigerian military has been locked in a fierce battle with Boko Haram fighters for years as they rampage through the country’s northeast, carrying out attacks on military positions and, more recently, frequent suicide bombings that have killed hundreds. In the government’s zest for rooting out the militants, civilians have frequently ended up detained, hurt or dead.

>Among the dead in the bombing were six workers from a local Red Cross organization, said a spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross, adding that 13 were wounded. Two soldiers were also wounded.

>A humanitarian helicopter sent by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross was arriving late Tuesday, and medical teams in Cameroon and Chad were being prepared to treat the wounded.

>“This large-scale attack on vulnerable people who have already fled from extreme violence is shocking and unacceptable,” said Dr. Jean-Clément Cabrol, the director of operations for Doctors Without Borders. “The safety of civilians must be respected. We are urgently calling on all parties to ensure the facilitation of medical evacuations by air or road for survivors who are in need of emergency care.”

>Military officials said local workers for Doctors Without Borders had also been wounded, but the group could not confirm that.

>On Tuesday afternoon, President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria acknowledged the military error on his official Twitter account.

>Mr. Buhari has said repeatedly that Boko Haram has been defeated, even as the group has carried out marketplace bombings in Nigeria, Cameroon and elsewhere in recent weeks. This week, two suicide bombers — one of them a girl about 12 years old — detonated explosives at the University of Maiduguri, where students and teachers had gathered for morning prayer. The blast killed four people, including Aliyu Usman Mani, 60, a veterinary medicine professor and father of two, and forced the university to postpone exams. The bombing also came as the United States is considering selling the Nigerian government warplanes, despite objections from some officials in Congress over the military’s past record of human rights abuses.

>The violence has uprooted more than two million people from their homes in the region. Some of them wind up in camps like the one at Rann, where 20,000 people in the past six months have fled to escape Boko Haram’s marauders.
...
>>
>The small, densely packed camp includes people living in an old schoolhouse, mud-brick homes and other structures, some of which were smashed in the bombing, said Hugues Robert, the Nigeria program manager for Doctors Without Borders.

>The bombing struck the camp early Tuesday afternoon, said Mr. Robert, who has been in touch with his team in Rann. The camp has been largely inaccessible for months, he said, and the charity’s workers had reached Rann for the first time only in December. Workers had returned on Saturday to establish a malnutrition screening clinic.

>On Tuesday, that clinic was converted into a triage center as the wounded victims of the bombing, some with grievous injuries, jammed under the tents, lying in the soil to await treatment from the small number of medical professionals there, who were equipped to treat hunger, not blast wounds.

>Darkness had fallen by the time more help arrived, and it seemed impossible to evacuate anyone before Wednesday, Mr. Robert said. “It’s really chaotic,” he said. “A lot of people won’t survive the night.”

>Rann is known as a hotbed of Boko Haram activity. The military had cleared the area of militants just this spring, stranding 3,000 people without food or water, according to local news reports. But with the end of a rainy season that had limited mobility, Boko Haram has regained a foothold. Late last month, a military post near Rann was attacked in a battle that lasted three hours, an indication of the strength and firepower of militants in the area.
...
>>
>Before the bombing on Tuesday, the Nigerian military had been informed that fighters were amassing to attack a military post nearby, according to a Western diplomat who requested anonymity in talking about security issues. Armed with geographic coordinates of where they thought the fighters were assembled, the air force launched the bombing strike but hit the camp in error.

>At a news conference in Maiduguri on Tuesday, Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor acknowledged the mistake, calling it “disturbing.”

>In a statement issued by his spokesman, Mr. Buhari pleaded for calm, calling the bombing “a regrettable operational mistake.”

A mentally challenged 12-year-old girl is reported to be in a critical condition after allegedly being gang raped by a school principal and three teachers in Bihar’s Jehanabad district in eastern India.
“She is my only child,” said the girl’s mother, who is a physical education teacher at Kako secondary school, where the alleged attack happened. She added that her top priority was to save her daughter and then fight for justice.

The girl was found by her mother in a disheveled condition on the rooftop of the school following a thorough search. The four suspects are on the run.

Four teachers allegedly raped her on the roof of the building, the Hindustan Times reports.

The girl’s mother was giving classes at the time of the incident. She said her daughter “is not mentally sound. As there is no one to take care of her at home, she accompanied me to school,” the Indian Express reported.

“When I did not find her for some time, I started looking for her and reached the rooftop. She was found in a bad condition there,” her mother said.

She took her daughter to the Kako police station, where police recorded her statement and referred the girl to Jehanabad Sadar hospital.

“As my daughter’s condition worsened and the bleeding did not stop, I took her to Patna by train and admitted her at the Patna Medical College and Hospital. She was referred to the maternity ward after the emergency ward did not accept her case,” she said.

Kusum Bharati, who is in charge of Jehanabad women’s police station, said a rape case has been launched against Aju Ahmad, the principal of Kako secondary school, and three teachers, Atul Rehman, Abdul Bari, and Mohammed Shaukat, on a complaint by the victim’s mother.

>Mexicans overwhelmingly say they oppose the wall U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has promised to build along their northern border.

>But in Mexico's Ciudad Juarez, where extensive fencing was erected by the United States to secure the border between 2007 and 2010, residents have a more nuanced view of what a wall can mean. They say the Juarez fence has both caused and relieved problems in the city and nearby areas.

>Some say the barrier has made life in Juarez better, diverting drug and human traffickers to more remote spots where crossing the border is easier. Others say the high fence bred a new kind of crime in the city, encouraging drug dealers who find it harder to get wares across the border to divert some of their product to expanding and serving a local market.

>Juarez's newly elected mayor, Armando Cabada, sees both sides. He says the fencing, cameras, sensors and stricter controls on border bridges have stopped flagrant crossings of undocumented Mexican migrants into downtown El Paso, Texas, which sits just across the fortified border, in sight of his wood-panelled office.

>On balance, however, the negatives have outweighed the positives, he says. He notes that shortly after the wall was built, Juarez was plunged into a hellish war between cartels that made it the murder capital of the world, while El Paso remained the safest U.S. city of its size.
...
62 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>After the border got tighter, Cabada said, "the narco traffickers had to battle much harder to cross their drugs into the United States, and a lot ended up staying here."

>The increased local supply of drugs changed social dynamics in the city and addiction and petty crime soared, he said.

>It is hard to isolate causes of the chaos that engulfed Juarez in 2008 when the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels fought over trafficking routes, but the belief that tighter controls contributed to the city's deadly, downward spiral is widespread among business leaders, security officials and politicians consulted by Reuters.

>The city of 1.4 million saw murders rise from 336 in 2007 when work on the fence began, to 3,057 in 2010 when the work was mostly concluded. Only two people were murdered in El Paso in 2010, down from eight in 2006.

>Last year murders were back below 2007 levels and normal life has begun to return, but strong demand for methamphetamines in Juarez has triggered a local turf battle and a new spike in violence, Cabada and city security officials said.

>Drug use in Juarez is among the highest in Mexico, government health surveys show.

>'LESS CHAOS'

>A poll conducted in May by Baselice & Associates Inc for Cronkite News and other media groups spoke to 1,500 people in 14 border cities in Mexico and the United States. It found that 72 percent of respondents on the U.S. side and 86 percent on the Mexican side said they were opposed to building a wall.

>Esteban Sabedra, a factory worker living in working class Anapra, on the western fringe of Juarez, is among the minority of Mexicans who would like to see more secure fencing.

>Sabedra's home is a city block away from a rusting, low wire fence in place since the 1980s separating Juarez and El Paso, that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection is now replacing with 1.3 miles (2.0 km) of 15-foot-high steel bollard barricade.

>He welcomes the new structure, saying he hopes it will deter human and drug traffickers who currently ply the neighborhood and intimidate residents.

>"(This new fence) is not a problem for us, on the contrary, it's better, less people will move through here," said Sabedra, who earns 150 pesos ($7.28) per day making brake pads for the U.S. market at a Juarez assembly plant. "There will be less chaos."

>Indeed, experts say fencing around El Paso is one of the factors behind a sharp drop in U.S. border guard apprehensions in the sector, to 14,495 last year from 122,256 in 2006, a drop partially attributed to illegal migrants shifting routes to less protected stretches of border.

>Migrant flows are a fraction of what they were in the sector largely because of the greatly increased security presence including the fencing and a near doubling of border agents, the Washington Office on Latin America rights group said in an October report.
...
>>
>DERELICT HOMES, SPAS

>Ciudad Juarez's public prosecutor, Jorge Arnaldo Nava López, blames the El Paso fencing for contributing to a sharp uptick in crime along a fertile strip through the desert known as Valle de Juarez. The crime spike has been particularly acute where the barrier ends near Guadalupe municipality.

>"It has fostered a displacement towards the villages on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez," Nava said.

>Valle de Juarez used to be a popular weekend escape for the city's middle class. Now, brutalized by violence and abandoned by outgunned municipal police, many of its spas, holiday homes and cotton farms lie derelict.

>Officials and migrants say Mexicans and Central Americans pay gang members hundreds of dollars to wade across a sluggish stretch of the river and try their luck dodging border guards to reach the towns of Tornillo and Fabens on the other side.

>Fortification of the border could push the chaos elsewhere. But Nava, who previously headed Chihuahua state's anti-kidnapping agency, fears it could also spark blowback in the form of increased extortion and kidnapping if local gangs now dedicated to drug trafficking are frustrated by a new wall.

>"We are not exempt from the possibility that this kind of crime flares up, and that (more) drugs intended for the United States begin to stay here in Ciudad Juarez," said Nava.

>(MOSCOW) Russia has started to cut back its forces in Syria, beginning with an aircraft carrier group, Russian state news agency TASS reported Friday.

>Warships led by Russia's sole aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov, will be the first to leave the conflict area, the chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, is quoted as saying.

>It is not clear if the Kuznetsov's warplanes will leave with it or if any will stay behind in Latakia, Syria.

>The reported initial withdrawal of forces come as a nationwide ceasefire -- negotiated between Russia, Turkey and the Syrian government as well as Iran and Syrian rebel groups late last year -- largely holds across the country, according to the United Nations.

>Russia's air strikes since 2015 in support of the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have been crucial in helping them to gain the upper hand in the long-running conflict and pushing rebel fighters from the key city of Aleppo in December.

>The decision to cut Russia's military presence in Syria was made by Putin at the recommendation of his Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on December 29, according to Russia's state-run agency Sputnik.

>"In accordance with the decision of Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces Vladimir Putin, the Defense Ministry is beginning to reduce the Armed Forces grouping in Syria," Gerasimov reportedly said.
The warships led by the Kuznetsov will leave the Mediterranean on Friday headed for Severomorsk, in Russia's northern Murmansk region, Gerasimov said.

Since this article has returned to the front page, I think this makes the whole argument of "Russia should be our biggest ally against ISIS" a hell of a lot weaker. It's not a coincidence that their withdrawal was timed after the Russian backed ceasefire and the fall of the last major rebel stronghold. Russia doesn't give a shit about ISIS, they're not the primary target of ISIS, and they most likely never will be unless the west spontaneously explodes

In order to get the Russians to fight ISIS, the US would have to provide concessions (probably the removal of sanctions), and the US would gain very little in this exchange since Russia adds nothing to America's fighting capabilities in the region that current allies do not already provide. Such an alliance is just welfare for the Russians.

The John Doe has since died and the attorney for the deceased client was ordered by a Superior Court Judge that he must now reveal the name of the individual. Going by the handle ‘Abe List,’ the individual tweeted the comment out last July.

>The order follows a ruling last year by the Court denying the anonymous Tweeter’s anti-SLAPP motion that stated the tweet was just hyperbole and because of that could not be deemed “defamatory.” They also said that the Tweeter had died and now Woods was harrassing the family.

It also sends a message to others who believe they can hide behind the anonymity of online social media to falsely accuse public figures of heinous behavior without recourse to themselves.”

TULSA (KFSM) — A man in Oklahoma is hoping to change the law after he has to continue to pay child support for a baby that is not his, according to our affiliate KOTV.

When Thomas’ high school girlfriend got pregnant, he married her. Five months later she had a little boy and he believed he had a son, but their marriage fell apart.

Thomas decided to take a paternity test when the boy was three years old.

“It comes back zero percent. I was in my office and I saw that. I should’ve expected it but I didn’t and it hit me. I’m telling my co-worker how shocked I am that someone could do this to someone,” he said.

The judge ordered Thomas to take another DNA test and he got the same result. The judge first ruled that Thomas was off the hook financially, but then reversed the decision because Oklahoma law says men must question paternity within two years of the child’s birth.

Thomas said that he had no reason to question it before he did, but, because he missed the deadline, the judge ordered him to pay around $500 a month in child support and nearly $15,000 in back support – for a child that is not his.

“I wish I was telling a lie,” he said. “I wish it wasn’t the truth but it is. That’s what makes it so crazy. Everyone I talk to about this can’t believe where the court system is coming from.”

Thomas wants lawmakers to change the law. He said he believes DNA matters regardless of when a man learns he’s not the father of a child.

“At this point, there’s really nothing I can do to get out of the $15,000 or get out of the child support, it’s done, it’s the law,” he said.

>WASHINGTON — President Obama on Tuesday largely commuted the remaining prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the army intelligence analyst convicted of an enormous 2010 leak that revealed American military and diplomatic activities across the world, disrupted the administration, and made WikiLeaks, the recipient of those disclosures, famous.

>The decision by Mr. Obama rescued Ms. Manning, who twice tried to commit suicide last year, from an uncertain future as a transgender woman incarcerated at the male military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. She has been jailed for nearly seven years, and her 35-year sentence was by far the longest punishment ever imposed in the United States for a leak conviction.

>Now, under the terms of Mr. Obama’s commutation announced by the White House on Tuesday, Ms. Manning is set to be freed on May 17 of this year, rather than in 2045.

>The commutation also relieved the Department of Defense of the difficult responsibility of her incarceration as she pushes for treatment for her gender dysphoria — including sex reassignment surgery — that the military has no experience providing.

>In recent days, the White House had signaled that Mr. Obama was seriously considering granting Ms. Manning’s commutation application, in contrast to a pardon application submitted on behalf of the other large-scale leaker of the era, Edward J. Snowden, the former intelligence contractor who disclosed archives of top secret surveillance files and is living as a fugitive in Russia.

>Asked about the two clemency applications on Friday, the White House spokesman, Joshua Earnest, discussed the “pretty stark difference” between Ms. Manning’s case for mercy with Mr. Snowden’s. While their offenses were similar, he said, there were “some important differences.”

>“Chelsea Manning is somebody who went through the military criminal justice process, was exposed to due process, was found guilty, was sentenced for her crimes, and she acknowledged wrongdoing,” he said. “Mr. Snowden fled into the arms of an adversary, and has sought refuge in a country that most recently made a concerted effort to undermine confidence in our democracy.”

>He also noted that while the documents Ms. Manning provided to WikiLeaks were “damaging to national security,” the ones Mr. Snowden disclosed were “far more serious and far more dangerous.” (None of the documents Ms. Manning disclosed were classified above the merely “secret” level.)

>Ms. Manning was still known as Bradley Manning when she deployed with her unit to Iraq in late 2009. There, she worked as a low-level intelligence analyst helping her unit assess insurgent activity in the area it was patrolling, a role that gave her access to a classified computer network.

>She copied hundreds of thousands of military incident logs from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, which, among other things, exposed abuses of detainees by Iraqi military officers working with American forces and showed that civilian deaths in the Iraq war were likely much higher than official estimates.

>The files she copied also included about 250,000 diplomatic cables from American embassies around the world showing sensitive deals and conversations, dossiers detailing intelligence assessments of Guantánamo detainees held without trial, and a video of an American helicopter attack in Baghdad in two Reuters journalists were killed, among others.

>She decided to make all these files public, as she wrote at the time, in the hope that they would incite “worldwide discussion, debates, and reforms.” WikiLeaks’ disclosed them — working with traditional news organizations including The New York Times — bringing notoriety to the group and its founder, Julian Assange.

>The disclosures set off a frantic scramble as Obama administration officials sought to minimize any potential harm, including getting to safety some foreigners in dangerous countries who were identified as having helped American troops or diplomats. Prosecutors, however, presented no evidence that anyone was killed because of the leaks.

>At her court-martial, Ms. Manning confessed in detail to her actions and apologized, saying she did not intend to put anyone at risk and noting that she was “dealing with a lot of issues” at the time she made her decision.

>Testimony at the trial showed that she had been in a mental and emotional crisis as she came to grips, amid the stress of a war zone, with the fact that she was not merely gay but had gender dysphoria. She had been behaving erratically, including angry outbursts and lapsing into catatonia midsentence. At one point she had emailed a photograph of herself in a woman’s wig to her supervisor.

>Prosecutors said that by making secret material available for publication on the internet, anyone — including Al Qaeda — could read it. And they accused Ms. Manning of treason, charging her with multiple counts of the Espionage Act as well as with “aiding the enemy,” a potential capital offense, although they said they would not seek her execution.

>Ms. Manning confessed and pleaded guilty to a lesser version of those charges without any deal to cap her sentence. But prosecutors pressed forward with a trial and won convictions on the more serious versions of those charges; a military judge acquitted her of “aiding the enemy.”

>In her commutation application, Ms. Manning said she had not imagined that she would be sentenced to the “extreme” term of 35 years, a term for which there was “no historical precedent.” (There have only been a handful of leak cases, and most sentence are in the range of one to three years.)

>“I take full and complete responsibility for my decision to disclose these materials to the public,” she wrote. “I have never made any excuses for what I did. I pleaded guilty without the protection of a plea agreement because I believed the military justice system would understand my motivation for the disclosure and sentence me fairly. I was wrong.”

>After her sentencing, Ms. Manning announced that she was transgender and changed her name to Chelsea.

>The military, under pressure from a lawsuit filed on her behalf by Chase Strangio of the American Civil Liberties Union, has permitted her to partly transition to life as a woman, including giving her cross-sex hormones and letting her wear female undergarments and light cosmetics.

>But it has not let her grow her hair longer than male military standards, citing security risks, and Ms. Manning said she had yet to be permitted to see a surgeon about the possibility of sex reassignment surgery.

>Until recently the military discharged transgender soldiers. In June, Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter changed that policy and said it would instead provide treatment for them, eventually including such surgery if doctors said it was necessary.

>But President-elect Donald J. Trump mocked that change as excessively “politically correct,” raising the possibility that he will rescind it.

>Even if he does, Ms. Manning will soon no longer be subject to the military’s control.

>WASHINGTON — Two United States Air Force B-2 bombers attacked Islamic State training camps outside of Surt, Libya, overnight, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

>Military analysts were assessing the impact of the strikes, but officials said it was possible that dozens of Islamic State fighters may have been killed.

>The Pentagon’s Africa Command announced on Dec. 19 the official end of air operations against the Islamic State, also known by the acronyms ISIS or ISIL, in Surt, the group’s coastal stronghold, after conducting 495 strikes against truck bombs, heavy guns, tanks and command bunkers there.

>But the need to carry out additional strikes reflected the resilience of the Islamic State in Libya. While the group was driven out of Surt last month, the Islamic State still has several hundred fighters who have dispersed across Libya and pose a threat to the country, its neighbors and potentially Europe, according to American officials and the Africa Command.

>Jonathan Winer, the Obama administration’s special envoy to Libya, told Congress in November that the Islamic State, as it suffered defeats in Surt at the hands of Libyan fighters and American warplanes, was most likely forming cells around the country. He called on Libyans to unite behind the country’s fledgling Government of National Accord to combat the terrorists.

>A recent analysis by the American Enterprise Institute, a policy organization in Washington, found that Islamic State militants operating as “desert brigades” south of Surt had ambushed Libyan military positions, disrupted supply lines with explosives and established checkpoints on key roads. The Islamic State is recruiting foreign fighters into southern Libya and is most likely relying on the same havens used by Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, according to the analysis.

>The two B-2 bombers flew a round-trip mission of about 34 hours from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and dropped satellite-guided bombs on the training camps, military officials said.

>The metro system and some schools in Italy's capital, Rome, were being evacuated Wednesday following a series of powerful earthquakes that struck the heart of the country.

>An initial 5.3-magnitude quake hit central Italy 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) west-northwest of Amatrice, a town devastated by powerful temblors last year, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

>While the epicenter was 90 kilometers northeast of Rome, the quake was felt strongly in the capital, sending people running from buildings in a panic.

>It struck at 10:25 am (4:25 am ET) at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers and has been followed by eight aftershocks in the same area, including one as strong as 5.7, the USGS reported.

>There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage but firefighters told CNN that heavy snow blocking roads has hampered their initial assessment.

>Around 850 firefighters are engaged but there have been no requests for rescues so far, the Italian Fire Department said in a Twitter post.

>Disaster authorities in Rome said they had been inundated with hundreds of calls from the city.

>Officials have begun looking for cracks and damage to structures in the city, many of them ancient and vulnerable from previous tremors.
Amatrice mayor: 'I have no words'

>Another series of quakes hit the region in October, but the impact was small as most people had evacuated from the previous tremors.

>"I don't know if we did something bad. That's what I have been asking since yesterday," Amatrice Mayor Sergio Pirozzi told the AFP news agency.

>"We have got up to two meters of snow and now another earthquake. What can I say? I have no words."

>Italy lies atop the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it the most quake-exposed country in the Mediterranean.

>Pirates are using the site's video hosting services to host adult videos. And there appear to be very little that Google, which owns YouTube, can do about it.

>YouTube has rules banning both sexual content and pirated videos, meaning that none of the videos should be available on the site. But many pirates have found a way around that restriction, meaning that they are able to use Google's reliable hosting services without having them taken down, reports TorrentFreak.

>Ordinarily, YouTube has a series of controls meant to banish such content. First among them is its Content-ID software, which scans videos and compares it with others to work out whether it includes copyrighted content, but it also uses reports of abuse from users and staff to find out problem videos.

>But pirates are able to get around that by uploading video and not publicly listing it, which means that they can embed it on their own site. That means that it gets served to users straight from Google, but won't be seen on YouTube or by the company's Content-ID system or administrators.

>Since the videos can still be embedded into external sites, pirates and others are still able to host them on their own pages and get the traffic and ad revenue from doing so. But they do not have to pay for the video hosting and can use YouTube.

>The trick is not only being used to host pornographic video but a whole range of content that wouldn't normally be allowed on the site. That includes other kinds of pirated footage, for instance.

>YouTube does tend to take the content down once it has been found, usually by the owners of those videos. But because they are hidden they tend not to be noticed as quickly and YouTube is slower at removing them, according to companies that have issued complaints.

>Google's public transparency report shows that it receives tens of thousands of complaints about people using the GoogleVideo.com domain, which is how the pirated YouTube videos show up to users.
