>space opera has been revived and made literary
>fantasy has been revived and made literary
Big mecha fiction when?
>>9589635
Examples of what you're talking about? Afaik those genres have just kept right on going (no revival needed) with only the occasional very rare literary work.
>>9589641
Space Opera was pretty well dead by the 60s
Sure you had some hold outs like the mote in gods eye but that was pretty crude throwback stuff
It really picked up in the late 80s/90s and has exploded since the 00s
Ian M. Banks and Alastair Reynolds would be good examples
>>9589641
The New Wave period was something of a doldrum. I'd consider the "revival" of the 90s to be a return to form, and I don't see any evidence that the modern incarnation of the genre is "literary" in a way that it wasn't previously.

Yo James 2, 14:28 Ya' dig?
Yo But someone will say, “You gots faif an' ah gots werkz.” Show me yo' faif apart from yo' werkz, an' ah by muh motha fuckin werkz will show you muh motha fuckin faif. You believe dat God iz one; you do well. Even da demons believe, an' shudder. Do you wants ta be shown, you senseless nigga, dat faif apart from werkz iz barren? wuz not our ancestor Abraham justified by werkz when he offered his son Isaac on da altar? You see dat faif wuz active along wif his werkz, an' faif wuz brought ta completion by da werkz. Thus da scripture wuz fulfilled dat says, “Abraham believed God, an' it wuz reckoned ta him as righteousness,” an' he wuz called da nigga o' God. You see dat uh nigga iz justified by werkz an' not by faif alone. Likewise, wuz not Rahab da prostitute also justified by werkz when she welcomed da messengers an' sent dem out by another road? fo' just as da body without da spirit iz dead, so faif without werkz iz also dead don't make me shank ya!

Trus God, an Do Wat He Say
14 Eh, my bruddas an sistas! So, wat? If one guy ony say he trus God, but he no do wat God say, you tink dass nuff fo da guy get outa da bad kine stuff he awready stay in? No way! He ony trussing God wit his mout! 15 If get one brudda o sista dat no mo clotheses an no mo food fo eat every day, 16 an den you go tell um, “Aloha! Come, get warm, an eat up.” But you no go give um notting. Latas wit dat! You guys know dey need all dat kine stuff fo dea body. Wass up wit dat? 17 Same ting, if somebody ony say he trus God, but same time, he no do notting, da bugga no trus God fo real kine, he ony mout.
18 But somebody goin say: “You trus God, but I do plenny good tings.”
I goin tell dat guy: “Eh! How come you tink lidat? You no can make proof dat you trus God, if you ony talk, but you no stay do good tings. Ony get one way you goin know dat I stay trus God -- wen I stay do good tings! Den you goin know fo shua dat I trus God. 19 I know you believe get ony one God. Good den! But da bad kine spirits believe dat too. Az why dey stay scared an shaking all ova! 20 Wot! You not tinking! If you trus God, but den, you no do good tings, az wase time. I gotta show you, o wat?
21 “Abraham, da ancesta guy dat all us Jewish guys come from, he wen do wat God wen tell him, wen he wen put his boy Isaac on top da altar fo make sacrifice to God. Az why God wen say, ‘Dis guy, he get um right wit me.’ 22 You no can see? Abraham wen trus God, an he wen do someting too -- he wen put Isaac on top da altar. An da tings he wen do wen help him fo trus God all da way. 23 So dis wen happen jalike da Bible say: ‘Abraham wen trus God, so God wen make Abraham get um right wit him.’ An God wen tell, ‘Abraham, he my friend.’ 24 Az right, yeah? Now you can see dat not nuff fo ony trus God an no do notting. You gotta go do someting too, if you like God fo say dat you get um right wit him.”
25 Same ting wit Rahab, da kine wahine from befo time dat take money wen she fool aroun. Wen she wen let da Israel army guys hide her house, she wen tell dem fo go back one diffren way so dey no get kill. She wen do someting right. Az why God wen say she get um right wit him.

this guy - what you think?
loved most of his work but a couple ended up being incredibly boring (incandescence im looking at you)
Egan, like the best of science fiction, is too smart for /lit/. And he's definitely too smart for /sci/.
He's very negative--his characters are almost all unlikeable--and not particularly concerned with the plight of the common man, though perhaps his themes circumvent such a lethargic and parochial view of life.
>>9587964
>As of 2015, Egan lives in Perth. He has been active on the issue of asylum seekers' mandatory detention in Australia
fuck off we're full
reviving this thread
i just finished distress and i loved it but i feel as though the last chapter could have been left out completely. it's a little too utopian.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/14/opinion/in-defense-of-cultural-appropriation.html
>The controversy began when Hal Niedzviecki, editor of Write, the magazine of the Canadian Writers’ Union, penned an editorial defending the right of white authors to create characters from minority or indigenous backgrounds. Within days, a social media backlash forced him to resign. The Writers’ Union issued an apology for an article that its Equity Task Force claimed “re-entrenches the deeply racist assumptions” held about art.
Lolwut? A white writer can only write white characters then? But won't that be reinforcing the cultural status quo or whatever?
The whole idea of cultural appropriation as a bad thing is retarded.
It honestly frightens me that "cultural appropriation" has been gaining traction. Culture is not owned. Culture reproduces, culture reinvents, culture grows naturally. Culture is not created in a vacuum, surely people know this. How can this intellectual dishonest be so widespread? How can these censors not see they are The Bad Guys?
i'm a fucking white man and wrote a book where one of the characters is a native american woman
whenever i get around to getting it published i plan to give zero fucks about such things
>look up some top selling adult books on amazon
is this proof we are degenerating?
>implying companies dont just pay to be put on the "best selling" page
>implying it wasnt mostly wives that bought this book, half of them ironically

coloring books are an easy way to meditate. if you can't understand the market there, you're degenrate

why does no one who says they meditate actually know how to meditate? fuckin' christ
I hate reading books. I've never finished a book in my life (other than those I was forced to read). I get no enjoyment out of reading. I think this might be because I've never taken the time to find a good book.
Give me the best book ever written, that will inspire me to read more.
>>9638609
if you read the best book ever written first, why would you read anything else afterwards? the joy of literature is at times, the pursuit of this greatest text.
but if you insist, my diary is that which you seek.
The Art of The Deal by Sun Tzu.

Try reading a short story you can find with a quick google search first. Go google "I have no mouth and I must scream" and go read that. Read the whole thing and then come back to this thread and tell us what you thought about it. I'll be waiting right here for you. C'mon, go read it. Not tomorrow, not later, not next year. Right now. Go.
Where should I start with Voltaire? What are some of your favorites /lit/?
>>9638398
Candide of course. This is one of those p obvious questions.
I rather like his little histories, and the letters from England, bet FP is the correct P.
I'm reading Candide right now, so I'd say start with that. Probably helps to understand the context though, so don't skip the introduction of whatever edition you get. It's really funny btw. If the beginning feels repetitive, just keep going, it gets more interesting after about the half way point
What are some books like the story of Spec Ops: The Line? I know Heart of Darkness is the obvious answer but I was thinking of psychological stories about soldiers in more recent (post WWII) wars or at least in very morally grey outlook.

Are they any grim dark-esque post apocalyptic novels? how women (and men) deal with rapes, going back to a barter system, eating your own children etc. basically everything the walking dead isn't. Yes I know it sounds edgy but my dick is wet for that kind of stuff.

Cults
Do they interest anyone else here?
It's a beautiful combination of rhetoric, psychology, and fiction.
There are so many good books on the subject too. Both from ex-cult members, but also professionals about certain parts of what makes a cult.
Also, I made a discord with this topic in mind
discord.gg/cRj4f4w
So as a thought experiment, how would you create and sustain a cult yourself? What aspect do you yourself deem the most important?
when you realise cults are basically self-help groups the mystique dies fairly quickly.
>>9637416
It's not 'just' self-help groups.
There is a difference between a benign book or yoga center, and then international cults that convince people to work for the cause 80hours a week, for less than minimum wage.
>>9637434
Ask yourself what spurs a man or woman to commit themselves to such a cause? It's rarely a fervent belief, but a resignment from personal responsibility.
