What 12 books should a British person read if he is a very paranoid British person who worries that other people will call him a pleb? He just wants this paranoia to fucking end. He sees literature as entertainment but is tormented by pseudo intellectuals whether he goes and he cannot remain an honest man of taste. He is a paradoxically a very inexperienced yet very weary young man.

Brothers Karamazov
A tale of two cities
Great expectations
War and peace
The republic
Origin of species
Moby dick

I've narrowed it down to those plus I'm looking for 6 more. I put origin of species there only because it's one of the few books I took to my new flat.

There will always be intellectual blind spots that someone could use against you if they wanted to.

My friend has a geography phd- he is not well read at all but can draw a near-perfect world map from memory. How well could you do it? It would make you look stupid if you forgot the Korean peninsula, or got the scale wrong.

His sister is a chemist- do you know the entire periodic table? It would be embarrassing if you couldn't name at least 60 elements, right?

Read what you like, and focus on how you feel rather than playing by someone else's definition.

Keep if British my good man

Complete works of Billy Shakes
Paradife Loft
Canterbury Tales
Heaney's Beowulf
Tom Jones
Middlemarch

I'll probably self-publish a novel soon.

Any good ideas on how to shill about it and actually sell it? I'm not much of a marketeer myself. Any writers here can give tips and tricks for non-writing stuff?

find some crap DIY book online (there are many), set up a wordpress blog and an Amazon affiliate account, flog the thing via both Createspace (paperback) and Kindle (ebook).

the hardest part is marketing the thing, not writing it or self-publishing.

good luck!

Very few people here have read multiple Jane Austen books, senpai.

you'll most likely think all of her work is at least decent

i think her posthumous work falls off a bit so i'd save that for last if you end up liking her that much. i'd probably recommend emma next

What are the shorter /lit/ recommendations?
I travel a lot and prefer reading things that I can finish within a few sessions. The Stranger for example. What are some must-read 200 pagers?

What is some essential Puritan literature? Not only theologically, but also in a more general sense (novels, poems, ect.). I am more interest in developments in New England, but any is fine. I think it is a very interesting and often misconstrued movement.

Jonathan Edwards. William Haller's The Rise of Puritanism, and Perry Miller's The New England Mind and The American Puritans are some good ol' books to set you right.
William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation is a very good read, surprisingly. Miles Standish? Bad. Ass.

I'm currently 2/3 of the way through the Guermantes' Way, the Moncrieff translation. To put it into really simple terms: read it if you want to have truth bomb after truth bomb dropped on you about yourself, society, and life, and you want those truth bombs to be packaged so beautifully that even if you don't understand them at first, you will enjoy the journey. Don't read it if you want a story.

It truly feels like the wiser father of Joyce's Portrait.

>"Mum," Harry said. "If you want to win this argument with Dad, look in chapter two of the first book of the Feynman Lectures on Physics. There's a quote there about how philosophers say a great deal about what science absolutely requires, and it is all wrong, because the only rule in science is that the final arbiter is observation - that you just have to look at the world and report what you see. Um... off the top of my head I can't think of where to find something about how it's an ideal of science to settle things by experiment instead of arguments -" His mother looked down at him and smiled. "Thank you, Harry. But -" her head rose back up to stare at her husband. "I don't want to win an argument with your father. I want my husband to, to listen to his wife who loves him, and trust her just this once -"
>Harry closed his eyes briefly. Hopeless. Both of his parents were just hopeless.

Hey /lit/ what are some books about/ that stimulate critical thinking

I feel like I somehow lost that ability along the way
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Foucault might do the trick. Reading his books and some Sartre when I was in h.s. stimulated my ability to I guess deconstruct.
>>
>>9593743
Reading Sartre just made me bitter and negative rather than skeptical. I'm still recovering.

Focault may well be worth a try though
>>
>>9593743
What sartre did you read. I've read the short essay EIAH and might read one of his books. Everything he said in EIAH seemed pretty obvious and basic to me (no one designed you, so you create your own rules for yourself), but maybe that's because I grew up in a post-existentialist world...? I wonder what he wrote that would inspire critical thinking

A lot of it was inspired by Arab influences coming from Spain. This style was very influential in the Languedoc region (langue d'oil ), and spread to other parts of Europe (minnelied). It mainly focused on love (platonic and vulgar love).

I'm quite fluent in high medieval German troubadour songs (minnelied), so if you want I can pass you a bibliography

Here's an example:

Under der linden
an der heide,
dâ unser zweier bette was,
dâ mugt ir vinden
schône beide
gebrochen bluomen unde gras.
