Why the hell is it still considered acceptable to make fun of the retarded in Children's literature? For examples, look no further than "The Dumb Bunnies" or the classic "The Stupids Step Out". How is this OK?

They are not mentally handicapped, they are just idiots. Everyone knows it's not ok to be an idiot.
>>
>>9596683
What's the difference. If it were just one idiot, I might see your point, but in both of these cases, it's a whole FAMILY of idiots, suggesting that the stupidity is some sort of inherited genetic condition and therefore not really their fault.
>>
>>9596664
the childrens books are highly moralists. they try to tell you not to be this stupid.

Will pic related prove to be a challenge for someone whose English isn't his first language?

I'm curious too, how hard will this book be to read for someone who doesn't read often?

Wallace likes to play with the English language a lot by making up words and using nouns as verbs and combining them and so on. I don't know how well you understand English, but if you know enough and are mildly clever you should have no problem.
He's not hard to read at all from a syntax or grammatical standpoint.

I'm looking for a story/short story I read ages ago. All I remember is that its set ambiguously but there's these villagers or townsfolk and they shun this guy and beat on him and basically treat him like trash because he has wings and basically it was revealed that he was an angel sent from god in the end but they didn't let him speak.
I'm interested in reading this again but I can't find it. Can anyone help me look for it?

This has to be the best contemporary book I am yet to read. Absolutely fantastic. Reminds me of Turgenev and Chekhov in many ways. I have read most of the modern Nobel Prize in literature winners, and this is the one which deserved it the most.

What did you think of it /lit/?

I have it still in my shelf waiting. Thanks for reminding tho. Thought about reading David Grossman next but might switch to Alexievich cause of your post.
>>
I became aware of it after it was short-listed for the Baillie Gifford Prize (formerly the Samuel johnson prize). I intend to buy a copy of it soon and am very excited about it.

>an on-topic post about a book that isn't spoonfed to college kids as part of their curriculum.

I don't mean this in a bad way...but are you new here?

if so, please stay

what was your favourite part of the book?
>>
>>9596257
>what was your favourite part of the book?

I can't really come up with a specific part, but the deep and profound suffering which was inflicted to entire populations of the Soviet Union is nothing like which has ever happened. What I really loved was the positivity which the people who lived through Socialism had. Even when starving, exploited and silenced they looked to the future. It's a triumph of the human spirit... or something along those lines.

>look up what the best Islamic/Arabic novels are
>they're all from Africa
>virtually nothing from the actual Middle East except 1001 Nights

What went wrong? The Middle East is a shithole right now, but so is Africa and that didn't stop Africa from producing great literature.

Hey /lit/, could you help me with some good quotes about the concept of Europe being a cultural centre for all the art, or like it being the main judge of any artistic work?

Working on a short story right now that plays with the idea

Why do people do this? It's not that conservatives are going to jump on the theatre wagon as soon as they hear of badmouthing of jews on stage. But why are they going out of their line to blatantly cut the parts they don't like and change the tone of the play completely to their own end.

When I went to High School, one of my assignments was, "Write an alternate ending to The Great Gatsby"

Out of fear of crushing children's creativity, we don't teach deference to the masters anymore. There's this idea that all ideas are equally important and equally valuable

So of course these assholes grow up thinking that of course they're smart enough to tamper with Shakespeare

oh come on, OP. anti-semetism is not acceptable in 2017, and some boring play by some DWM (dead white man) isn't sacred, it needs to change with the times, and in 2017, that shit is NOT OK

I thought this was pretty vacuous, which is disappointing because I love her nonfic. It's a caricature of the "ennui novel" and its particular ironic tone sets it up to be exactly the thing it's trying to criticize. BEE and Nathaniel West did it better.

>>9595344
Nathaniel West's "Day of the Locust" and Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep" are essential LA-core.

Is the field of ethics a scam?

How can you even defend objective morality?

Is everyone wasting their time coming up with contradictory lists of arbitrary rules?
9 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
If someone wants to autistically create some sort of ethical system I don't care at all. Feel fucking free.

But yes OP, there are infinitely many possible ethical systems. Why is the idea of an "objective morality" even taken seriously? Dishonest and financially (and attentionwise) people, such as taxpayer funded (or book sale funded) academics. Or maybe many years ago it was dishonest and authoritarian religious people

Do you find that your writing style, discipline, or quality changes depending on whether you write by hand, on a computer, or by some other means?

For example, when I write on my computer, the words of course fly, but I feel I may get too verbose and wordy. By hand, I of course pause more.

While I've been traveling, I've been writing on my phone with a handwriting app and a stylus, which is almost like writing by hand, but it is a little slower and more cumbersome, and I feel less free as I would on a keyboard.

I've also considered as an experiment using voice-to-type.

Bump, and here's some more motivation to enter the thread, you depraved animals.

Hey /lit/

I want to learn about god and write my own handbook on how I would define God.

I'm currently in a bible study and they're only read the bible.

I'd like to find God, however I find it difficult because these people pray to him so God will help them with their studies or give them guidance in how to be productive.

It just seems like crap.

I believe there is a God, but I want to understand better!
