13 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>

I read it. I was pretty neutral about it.
>>
What does /lit/ think of Palahniuk in general?

Like most people I became too cool for him but I liked his stuff when I was in high school.
>>
>>7868561
Probably my favorite by him.

'The Pale King' by David Foster Wallace
>>
A seriously unfinished work by a great author who was a pretty immature writer for most of his career who showed immense promise of a potential masterpiece with The Pale King but unfortunately ended his life before he could finish it (potentially knowing he never would be able to, anyway).

was it good?

Opinions on this trilogy.

Do you think this is good literature regardless of its best seller status and popularity?

Why is thic considered a great book? It is shite compared to 1984. Or is it acclaimed for the same reasons as Siddharta - for its simplicity?

I think it's because of effectiveness to transmit an idea, I remember that our teacher in middle school made us read that, I understood the danger of retards pretty quickly.

I believe that middle shcool is a good time to read it, however it seems to me that the greatness of it is exaggerated a bit.

Seconding Pär Lagerkvist. The Dwarf is fucking masterpiece.

The Long Ships (Röde Orm) by Frans G. Bengtsson is also essential reading.

Aniara by Harry Martinson is great if you're into epic poems.

Can you critique this?

The leaves were green splashed with gold; the sky was baby blue, and clouds as if snow was floating above the world. The sun lit up the world like a candle lights a room and revealed it’s mix of bright greens, yellows and blues. Every now and then, the still warm air was interrupted by a generous cold gust of wind coming from the East. The field was clean and trimmed. If a person were to rub their foot on the grass, they'd hear a soft squeaking noise as if it was a polished wooden floor. Deep down in the oceans, coral reefs glittered with fantastical array of colors; deep reds, bright yellows and passionate pinks, like a bouquet that spreads throughout the world.

The author is so unobservant and narcissistic that he didn't even post in a critique thread that he'll never write anything of value. Kill yourself/10

Why do mythological origin stories so often include a "decline of man"? Hesiod's five ages, fall of man in Genesis, the Yugas in Hinduism, etc.

What's the psychology behind these stories? In virtually all of them the decline is irreversible, so it's not some sort of aspirational thing to make people think things can be better. What's the societal benefit to the veneration of an imaginary golden past?

Hey /lit/

I'd like to find good books with a little girl protagonist. I'm not really sure where to ask, and to not appear creepy I ask you, here. I like fantasy and sci-fi (trash tier?), but any book will do, as long as it's enjoyable.

Try Momo, by Michael Ende.
>>
Taming Riki is an excellent, underrated bit of fantasy fiction. aimed at younger readers but enjoyable for all imho. little girl protagonist is lovely and whimsical and intelligent
>>
>>7867720
For good, historical moe, try Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Dear /lit/

What defines god-tier literature? God-tier writing mechanics? Stories capable of entertaining the masses? I feel it is easy to define a "good book" as one that I enjoy, but is it more accurate to define a books worth by its ability to teach, or bear significance on the world?

I found pic related highly entertaining though lacking in many manors.

hey /lit/, i own this copy of gravity's rainbow. haven't started reading it yet. ive heard about the errors in this publication. should i sell it to my local used bookstore and buy an older copy? how bad are the mistakes?

Man how the fuck does a big publishing company actually fuck up a book like GR lmoa
>>
You cant get rid of it dude. Not only is it riddled with errors, but its cursed. I tried to chuck mine out the window and it came boomeranging back inside and flew rigut back into its place on the shelf
>>
>>7867475
The mistakes are inconsequential and few, and from context, you can work it out if you're not retarded. People need to stop losing their shit over this as if it destroys the coherence of the whole book.

About two months ago I started reading consistently, but I still read pretty slowly. Are there any tips you guys can give me on how to read faster. Is the best thing to do to just keep reading consistently.
13 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>7867346
Reading speed is largely genetic, just learn to be comfortable with your current rate and use it for pacing purposes.
Don't be fooled by speed-reading tips or techniques they're scam designed to sell a lot of worthless media, also delete this thread before anyone comes here and starts making "recommendations" based on their own inner sadism.
Keep reading though.
>>
Reading is done when the eyes pause over text. With your eyes paused you can read 3-4 words at once, more if you're talented or practiced. So you can break up a line into 2-3 eye movements and go down the page like that.
>>
Reading slowly is better than reading quickly. If anything, those who read quickly should try to slow down.

“As I say at the beginning of my workshops, 'Everything I say here is a lie -- bullshit, in other words -- because anything that you put in words is not experience, is not the experiment. It's a representation -- a misrepresentation.”

Remember the motto passed to us (from G.C.C. via S.S.C.U.): "Cosmic Love is absolutely Ruthless and Highly Indifferent: it teaches its lessons whether you like/dislike them or not."

― John C. Lilly

Anyone on /lit/ familiar with John C. Lilly and his work? He seems to me like a person who saw beyond the illusory nature of language, noting how it could never fully explain the truth of the cosmos. Nature is, as he words it, indifferent and ruthless. And yet we are a society that operates on ideological discourse, making all these various meanings that have nothing to do with nature.

Interview of Lilly here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVf81iwSXT4

Tedious, to be honest.
>>
>>7867294
Have you ever taken acid?
>>
>>7867298
As a matter of fact, yes. I just have the presence of mind to look at the experience critically afterwards.
