Is post structuralism dying? Will anyone remember Lacan and co. in 50 years?

I think it suffers from its most virulent adherents currently being online activists, clickbait journalists, and actresses who are only on TV for their looks.

The reaction on the other hand is massive and entrenched, and it only occurs within western culture.

They are exactly on par with Lacan, Derrida, Foucault and other luminaries. Not their fault the state isn't funding their tantrums.

Lovecraft or bust. Full sized novels make it impossible to cultivate suspense. Suspense it of the utmost importance in horror, but it must be cultivated and unbroken.

I always end up writing anything in the worst possible way. It's not so much about using big, obscure or technical terms as it is about never coming to the point. After several edits, I can 'skim' 80% of it and bring down to two lines what I first didn't quite say in a few paragraphs.

I want brevity and clarity as a way of writing. How do I nurture this?

>Inb4 'Write/read more' is not enough. Also, not being clear makes me feel it affects how others see me.
*Btw, it's taken me 16 minutes to complete this post, 13 of which I've just been re-writing.

Bumping for interest.
I feel the same way as OP, and I'm not sure I appreciate the English language enough to write with actual elegance yet.

You're spending too much time editing what you had written probably because you care about the aesthetics of your prose.

Why did Orwell hate the Irish so much?

>W.B. Yeats once said that a dog does not praise its fleas, but this is somewhat contradicted by the special status enjoyed in this country by Irish nationalist writers

>ORWELL was a socialist tho!!!

Orwell went to Spain to fight for his most deeply held belief, yes. Unfortunately, that belief wasn’t socialism but the nastiest, most puerile of the tribal hatreds English babies learn in the cradle: anti-Catholicism.

The revolution in Catalonia was unlike any other socialist rebellion before or since. Its fury was reserved for priests, nuns, churches and monasteries, and the anarchists Orwell loved were famous for inventing new ways to kill clerics. That’s what drew Orwell to Catalonia: the chance to help the men who were disemboweling priests in Barcelona and winding their guts around the altars. At last, a chance to smite the bloody Papists, the whore of Rome, Eric Blair’s oldest and dearest hate. Not since Cromwell had an English Papist-baiter had such an opportunity to torment the filthy priests. Naturally, Orwell was on the first ship he could catch. It wasn’t about socialism, it was about the chance to kill “a stinking RC” (Orwell’s description of Wyndham Lewis).

The Celtophobia starts in the very first line of 1984, the famous opening: “It was a cold, bright day in April and the clocks were striking thirteen.” Oh the horror of the continental (Papist) 24-hour clock.

O'Brien is the villain, Oppressing innocent Englishmen.

Monsieurs and Patricians of /lit/ what methods do you use to improve your vocabulary?

Apart from looking up a specific word while reading - something that annoys as it breaks flow - I use the website Vocabulary . com.

It's very useful and I usually play around five rounds a day, sometimes more if I'm bored.

It's definitely worked for me as I'm seeing more words I never understood and wouldn't have before I started using the website.

There's an app as well which I got for free but I think it's like a dollar or something but it's not needed as the site is free.

Do you think you have a good vocabulary? Are you an autist who uses said vocabulary in every day life or just for writing and reading?

I always read with a composition book that occasionally doubles as a journal. While reading I transcribe any interesting passages, turns of phrase, or words I don't know, and at the end of the week I look those words up and record their definitions.

don't be one of those idiots who just carpet-bomb a hundred different magazines with a single submission.

the first step should be to actually READ the magazines that publish the kind of writing you're interested in so you know what the market expects.

How old were you when you gave up on that backlog that would take you years to read - or at least on the underlying assumption that piling up the titles of books you'll have at some point read could bring you anything whatsoever?

How do I do it?

Guys, intellectually I'm all spooked out. I can't stand philosophy because of all the unfalsifiable garbage. Many fields like economics etc are just applied common sense and stamp collecting. I see novels as nothing but entertainment despite pretentious people claiming life / philosophical insights and tonnes of people will consider you a disgusting plebeian if you don't initially read shitloads of boring as fuck canon novels.

I think I am painfully adapting to the idea of the Internet age / information overload by abandoning any pretension that I can be an all rounder or even dilettante in everything. There are ten trillion books called "Introduction to [broad and important field]", even if you only have one of each field.

History is similar to novels. Shitloads of reading along with a shitload pretension thrown on top telling you that you truly cannot no nuthin unless you have an in depth understanding of the Greeks / Romans / Christianity / USA / WW1 / WW2 / financial systems / or shitloads of other topics I can't stand it. And then there's current events. I don't care about climate change, outer space, inequality, China, the EU (as long as it doesn't stir up too much shit), applied psychology, the education system, diversity (as long as people aren't treated badly), Russia, South America, refugees, nutrition, mental health, and more. Admitting just one of these would make me an iredeemable idiot, no doubt.

Has anyone else had similar thoughts? The spooks are powerful and must be removed but their removal leaves your mind in a promordial state that is more susceptible to spooks than before.

So, basically, you are having a fit because you can't be a polymath? Just read and learn whatever you like. There's no deadline to meet and no final exam. I think the elitism many people on this board exhibit has had a bad influence on you.

Hey /lit/ I'm kind of new to reading recently and I'm thinking of trying this as my next book.

Has anyone read it? What are your opinions on it?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.

I wouldn't recommend this for someone new to reading. Some of the greatest books, filled with life and virtuosity of style, will be a struggle to read. Not to say that you can't finish the book, but why turn what could be a great joy into a chore? Read things from the lit startkit and other such books, build up your skills, and come back when you are more experienced.
