So, basically, you are having a fit because you can't be a polymath? Just read and learn whatever you like. There's no deadline to meet and no final exam. I think the elitism many people on this board exhibit has had a bad influence on you.

I wouldn't recommend this for someone new to reading. Some of the greatest books, filled with life and virtuosity of style, will be a struggle to read. Not to say that you can't finish the book, but why turn what could be a great joy into a chore? Read things from the lit startkit and other such books, build up your skills, and come back when you are more experienced.
