what does /lit/ think about text-based forum roleplaying?
it's how a learned to go from describing subjects or objects in one sentence to being able to write at least a paragraph about the thing in question, if necessary. but i can't say it made me a good writer because i never really developed past some of the people who i was writing with.
it also gave me a home, which sounds lame, but if you remember the ezBoard days of the internet, there was no 4chan/youtube/wikipedia. i still hang out with those people but no one really RPs anymore.
is it worse or better than fanfic and where does it stand in relation to solo writing as a whole? should i continue doing it? (i had some of my best times RPing)
>>8039694
I play around with Dnd to explore themes through improvisational story-telling
Write solo in tandem with your RPing and it shouldn't hurt
Just do it with care
It's a very good idea but I doubt you'll find anyone willing to play with you. I did a lot by email back in 2000 but it's dead, now.
>>8039694
>where does it stand in relation to solo writing as a whole?
It is the slam poetry of co-written digital texts. Full of self-indulgence, narcissism, and power fantasies.
It has the same problems as any collaboration in digital spaces, in that it is very difficult to strike the right balance between quality controls and barriers-to-entry.
i.e. Trying to control people too much will drive them away. But failing to control people at all will leave your project vulnerable to idiots and spoilers.
>should i continue doing it? (i had some of my best times RPing)
If you want to. Just remember that even if you were the best forum roleplayer in the world, it would be pointless for anything other than your enjoyment.
Post them haiku's. No copypasta please.

so i was browsing an upcoming christie's auction of rare manuscripts, and as i was scrolling through the lots of patrishness i stop dead in my tracks like wtf is this shit? can one of u genrefags explain me this? they're auctioning like old shit from Edward Gibbon's personal library and like first edition Mark Twain's and shit, and like some personal papers of some 20th century fag like Hemingway or Kerouac or whatever...and then ... this.
>>8039450
If they're all first editions in great condition and 15 of them are signed by the author, they're worth something or will be eventually.
Those books are fairly popular and may be around to stay as YA fiction.
Christies sells everything, remember jacques is dead and its one of the most beloved series in england, it might not seem like much but to someone its worth something.
Also
>2-3,000
people buy vases from christies as much as sports cars on a weekly basis m8, its really just a tiny fun little auction piece.
>pic related something a little more valuable from a christies acution.
>>8039471
that shit isn't even a generation old yet, the rest of the auction was old musty shit that will fall apart if u sneeze on it and this shit is like some crap that could have been taken off a barnes and noble shelf a decade ago
What are some good books with deeply psychological themes? This includes psychological horror, studies, etc.
What does 'psychological themes' even mean?

The life and works of Sigmund Freud.

When I was in kindergarden me and my dad wrote a poem in some sort of poem competition and won some candy

Chem Eng major, won a uni Shakespeare competition by taking the plot to the crucible and rewriting it using Shakespeare's own lines. I think i used lines from Henry IV and Julius Ceasar the most.
Won it last year, received a $100 gift card to the Union Bookshop. I'm rewriting the Illiad as a family drama, similar to Johnathan Franzen's The Corrections.
Are pronoun shifts really that bad? I've been struggling with the aesthetics and the implied fracturing of a character's thoughts in regards to narrative shifts. Is this very common? Will people misunderstand the conscious disconnection that my character's exhibit when a passage becomes a bit "too revealing" for them? I think it's a great way to deal with writing about mental illness and the disconnect that some people practice in regards to "the person" and the illness.
but apparently that's wrong lmao
c'mon, there's 10 or so meme threads and none of you professors can answer me lmao
>>8038586
Simply by creating an unreliable narrator may better convey a descent into insanity. I think the pronoun shift may turn into too easily of a crutch. The art comes into creating the unreliable narrator's world both being reasonable and disjunct, therefor making the gullible reader fall prey. Look at Lolita for a pervert's empathizable narrator through wit, look at Poe for madness (The Eye, I believe it was called), American Psycho, Fight Club, etc.
Unless the pronoun shift is absolutely necessary, it may be just too cheesey.
>c'mon, there's 10 or so meme threads and none of you professors can answer me lmao
That's only the case because /mu/ and /pol/ is leaking in here. Many of the quality posters are frequenting much less often. Hopefully this board will return back to usual business. Perhaps after the summer plebs leave?
I don't recall seeing pronoun shifts except in free-flowing narration where they go smooth and unnoticed, prose-wise, unless hard looked at
>>8038945
I'm not a quality poster and I'm frequenting much less often so I think you're projecting something here

Hey /lit/, I'm curious. What are the best books covering the Napoleonic Wars?
>>8037903
I heard war and peace is alright but you're probably better off just watching the tv series

There's countless biographies on literally every side. Man you shithead.
Fuck guys like you.

In regards to biography I'd add Patrice Gueniffey's "Bonaparte". Volume 1 is out and it's ~1000 pages, it's Napoleon's early life until he becomes consul in 1802. I think I read there's going to be at least 2 more volumes.
I heard the TV series Roberts did on Napoleon wasn't all that good. However the debate I watched between him and another titled "Napoleon: The Great?" or something like that he did very well, can't remember the word for it but the guy who's supposed to control the debate was a complete idiot and biased as hell but Roberts still held his ground very well.

I hate the fucking world, too many god damn fuckers in it.
Too many thoughts about societies all wrapped up together in this place called AMERICA.
Everyone has their own god damn opinions on every damn thing and you may be saying "well what makes you so different?".
Because I have something only me and V have, SELF AWARENESS, Call it exortenstiolism or whatever the fuck you want.
We know what we are to this world and what everyone else is.
We learn more than what caused the civil war and how to simplify quadratics in school.
We have been watching you people. we know what you think and how you act, all talk and no actions.
People who are said to be brave or couragous are usually just STUPID then they say later that they did it on purpose cause they are brave when they did it on fucking accident.
GOD everything is so corrupt and so filled with little opinions and points of view and peoples' own little agendas and schedules.
This isn't a world any more, its H.O.E. and no one knows it.
Self awareness is a wonderful thing.
