Monsieurs and Patricians of /lit/ what methods do you use to improve your vocabulary?

Apart from looking up a specific word while reading - something that annoys as it breaks flow - I use the website Vocabulary . com.

It's very useful and I usually play around five rounds a day, sometimes more if I'm bored.

It's definitely worked for me as I'm seeing more words I never understood and wouldn't have before I started using the website.

There's an app as well which I got for free but I think it's like a dollar or something but it's not needed as the site is free.

Do you think you have a good vocabulary? Are you an autist who uses said vocabulary in every day life or just for writing and reading?

I always read with a composition book that occasionally doubles as a journal. While reading I transcribe any interesting passages, turns of phrase, or words I don't know, and at the end of the week I look those words up and record their definitions.

What if you were to read a book with lots of quaint words? How could you read something like Blood Meridian?

If you read a lot of reasonably literate literature, you will have a satisfactory vocabulary. You may even know how to use it sensibly, but then again you may not. What good is that? "Improving vocabulary" is a gimmick for impressing silly people. There are a lot of silly people in the world. So what? Do you want to hang around with silly people? Oh wait, you're on 4chan. Never mind. Sesquipedalian. Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. Google.

Don't improve your vocabulary. Improve your writing. Improve your life.

Improving your vocabulary is essential for being able to read good literature in the first place and an important part of writing.

You don't just read a book and know all the words, you have to learn them somehow before hand.

It basically relies on your parents speaking to you like a human being and not a baby under the age of 6

It makes writing a lot easier. Fuck Hemmingway. Not everyone wants to sound like a down-to-earth middle-american yuppie

>ah, blood meridian, monsieur? that novel is the sark and chaparral of literature, the filament whereon rode the remuda of highbrow, corraled out of some destitute hacienda upon the arroya, quirting and splurting with main and with pyrolatrous coagulate of lobated grandiloquence. our eyes rode over the pages, monsieur, of that slatribed azotea like argonauts of suttee, juzgados of swole, bights and systoles of walleyed and tyrolean and carbolic and tectite and scurvid and querent and creosote and scapular malpais and shillelagh. we scalped, monsieur, the gantlet of its esker and led our naked bodies into the rebozos of its mennonite and siliceous fauna, wallowing in the jasper and the carnelian like archimandrites, teamsters, combers of cassinette scoria, centroids of holothurian chancre, with pizzles of enfiladed indigo panic grass in the saltbush of our vigas, true commodores of the written page, rebuses, monsieur, we were the mygale spiders too and the devonian and debouched pulque that settled on the frizzen studebakers, listening the wolves howling in the desert while we saw the judge rise out of a thicket of corbelled arches, whinstone, cairn, cholla, lemurs, femurs, leantos, moonblanched nacre, uncottered fistulas of groaning osnaburg and kelp, isomers of fluepipe and halms awap of griddle, guisado, pelancillo: The Post
