I'm not looking for poet recommendations, but are there any books on HOW to write poetry? I missed out in college since I didn't take any poetry classes. Now that I have time, I want to learn.

Share any books that helped you/a good starting point.

If you need a book you'll never know, simple as that. It's not something you are thought
>>
>>8054231
Ok.
>>
>>8054229
If you can't learn from reading poetry then why bother? You'll never get good. Just read and try to copy what you like.

I'm thinking about writing a short sci-fi story about bitcoin mining and my character created an amazing algorithm to optimize mining but I can't seem to have ideas for the algorithm. Could someone help me?

You shouldn't write about topics you are not knowledgeable on.

Somebody with a doctorate in it will inevitably crawl out of the woodwork to personally call you stupid in public.
>>
>>8054154
You know you don't have to come up with the algorithm itself, right? Just bullshit with technojargon. You're writing a story, not an academic paper.

If you can't even bullshit with technojargon, then you need to do more research else it'll just be NCIS-tier

http://culture.vg/features/art-theory/on-the-genealogy-of-art-games.html

Nobody will read this but this internet eccentric wrote a really fucking great essay on this subject.

To paraphrase what I remember from it: Has art peaked? No. Have certain art forms peaked? Yes.

How can you look at Shakespeare or Ulysses and compare that to current literature and think anything other than a decline has happened? Or Beethoven and Mozart with current music? I know you'll say that we're comparing the best of the past with the average today, but he gives solid reasons why and how the cultures of art forms decline, meaning that new Shakespeares are not possible within those art forms.

If you are one of those people who insist that Tracey Enim's unmade bed is on par with Michaelangelo's David, you will dislike the essay. If you wonder why an opinion like that could be taken seriously, read the essay.

Classical music (notated for performance by orchestra) has became outdated.
We shouldn't downplay their compositional talent, but we should acknowledge that unless you are making music with the final recording as the piece itself, you are missing out on an entire dimension of musical expression.

>We Write Together (7 Short or Long Paragraphs Each)

You're waking up to the sound of gulls that squawk up above, in a sky your tired eyes conceal.

A cool breeze passes you, highlighting your front-half is sprinkled wet.

You head feels as light as feather, and your body is floating on water.

“This is the moment that you've all been waiting for!”
A loud male voice is broadcast over speakers some distance ahead, as thousands of people cheer.

Your eyes glint open to blue and yellow, slowly seizing the glare of daylight.

The colours are put in their places, into a sky that shimmers and onto the brilliant Sun that rules there; and they put you in your place as the world becomes clear. You're afloat in an ocean, not so far from land.

You push down your legs to meet sand, and you look across clear water, the way that the cheers came from.

The purple air rushes clear.
Thin strands propose their contents briefly, but firmly. A soft warm flow begins. Familiar. Yet, not always. A visitor.
>>
You see over the tops of tropic trees and small, wood shacks, a stadium that's larger-than-life; a sandy beach that's a swim away welcomes you.

A galore of strange, colourful orbs, race to the sky from the open roof of the arena.

You look down at your reflection to your hazel eyes that are adorned with palpitations that look like black branches. Your hair is short black, with a messed-up fringe. Your stern nose is barely broken, and your strawberry lips are apart, as you take in this moment.

You pull your hands above the surface. Your palms are soft and pale, and the tips of your fingers are pink and rounded from nails chewed away. You look at your thin, toned forearms; and the veins that run like rivers across your skin.

Yes. Orlando Furioso is godly. The Song of Roland is short and sweet. Amadis and Tirant lo Blanch (which Cervantes actually likes) are both nice, too.

Didn't read El Cid yet :( .

Using a fake name, of course, which in reality, is part of my hebrew name.

I picked up my 20-somethingson, David,at themetroa few weeks ago. After he got into the car, heput out his hands towards me, and asked:
“Do you likethis color?Kind ofadeep purple. I get a lot of compliments on it.”
YES, DAVID WEARS NAIL POLISH; BRIGHT, GLOSSY, FREQUENTLY CHANGING COLORS, NAIL POLISH. AND IT DOESN’T BOTHER ME. IN FACT,I LIKE THE DEEP PURPLE SHADE.
When David first told us he was gay in his junior year in high school, my husband and I were somewhat surprisedbut when we thought about it, it began to make sense. At first I worriedabout the increased chances that he would develop AIDS and Iwas concerned about problems he would likely face being acceptedas a gay man in the less tolerant world we lived in a decade ago. But the gay part? We had an inkling. O.K., more than an inkling. (and what parent doesn’t?).
As an avid reader and news-watcher, I did havesome knowledge of the evolving gay community.I was aware of the AIDS crisis in the 1980’s, I remember when Barney Frank became the first U.S. congressman to come out as gay in 1987 and when in 1989 a New York Court ruled that it was legally possible for a same-sex couple to constitute a family.
But when our teenage son told us he was gay, my personal knowledgeof what it meant to be a gay man was, unfortunately, tainted by popularmedia stereotypes which told us that most gay men:
* dressed impeccably
* were extremely neat and well organized
* often chose interior design or hair styling as their professions
* had high pitched, effeminate voices
* liked to gossip
* had many women friends
From time to time, in my son’s late teen years, I honestly wondered if maybe he had been mistaken as to his sexual identity. After all, he was incredibly sloppy, his bed room was knee-deep in dirty clothing and he was completely disorganized.Heplanned to major in chemistryand disliked idle chatter.
But the years passed,as he grew into his 20’s,he stayed just as disorganized andmessy, with a fervent dislike for doing laundry–and he remained gay.
He is comfortable with his own identity. And because he is so comfortable, we are too. He has patiently explained that what I first thought I knew about gay men wasall wrong.

And finally the media has caught upa bit. Wehear about gay football players and (sometimes) see gay men whodon’twear stylishclothing.
Unfortunately, it still makes the news when a gay man isthe first in his field or profession.
Earlier this year, when our synagogue, Temple Sinaiin Washington, DC, hired a new rabbi who happenedto be gay, it became a news story in the WashingtonPost.
“RABBI ADAM ROSENWASSER RECENTLY BECAME THE FIRST RABBI HIRED TO FILL A MAJOR PULPIT IN WASHINGTON WHO IS MARRIED TO SOMEONE OF HIS OWN GENDER. BUT HE DOESN’T LIKE TO FOCUS ON THAT. ‘I’M GAY, BUT I ALSO LIKE TO SCUBA DIVE AND PLAY GUITAR.’“(AUGUST 8, 2014)
Sonow we all know that some men who are football players, some whoare messy and some who are rabbis, can all be gay. And that the fact that they have sexual partners of the same gender is not what defines them.
And there are somemen who wear nail polish. And change colors frequently, and with great pleasure.
But I draw the line at mint green. Adays ago David showed me his latest color, his nails were mint green.Reminded me of medical scrubs, bad memories. Better to go back to the purple or maybe try a new shade, I suggested, how about deep pink?
David looked up at me as if I was crazy, “Mom, I am not that gay”.
O.K., so I don’t totally get the gay male thing yet. But I accept it, and I accept him, purple nail polish yes, mint green no, his color choices don’t define him either.
