Pretty sad, wasn''t?
What did you make of Strugatsky bros comparing artifacts of western influence to the alien artifacts of the Zone?
I don't think the translation carries the last part very well either: supposedly in Russian Red says "free" like a fishmonger shouting out prices, and not "free" as in "liberty".
I thought that Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy would just be some quirky, hipster, Wes-Anderson-tier bullshit but it turned out to be pretty clever and original.
What does /lit/ think of "Seveneves" by Neal Stephenson?
>>8411253
>Neal Stephenson
>Audiobook
>A faggy trip code
what the hell are you doing
>>8411275
trolling your ass...heh...nothing personnel kid
I've read "Snowcrash", "The Diamond Age" and "Cryptonomicon", in that order. I'm used to Mr. Stephenson's rubbing his reader's face in "lel so random" factoids (e.g. The Agent and its use as a term in fencing) and other unappealing features of his writing. I'm finding that I have no desire to continue with "Seveneves" early on in the book (the world leaders just announced the predicted end of the world at Crater Lake).
I'm wondering what you guys thought about this book.
'Franzen has taken the somewhat inaccessible avant-garde concerns of writers like Don DeLillo or the David Foster Wallace of "Infinite Jest" and placed them in the context of a mainstream novel about *family* and how it prepares you to function (or not) in the larger world.'
Has anybody here read it and care to share whether they thought it a worthwhile read?

It's well written and all, but it's graceless. It just feels like the author cares more about "exploring the great issues of modern American life" or some crap that impresses critics than about writing something unique and entertaining. I hear it's much worse in Freedom.
You know what? The Simpsons is arguably the great American novel. Franzen doesn't care about his characters enough, and he surely doesn't care enough for the full range of American experience.
>>8411207
someone post that review of this book

Anyone up for a discussion on lgbt characters in books? Characters we assume are gay, homoerotic subtext in books, books about same gender romance, maybe some gender related stuff, etc.
I'm trying to get into pre-20th century works with lesbian themes myself. I'm bored of everything gay being post-1960s.
Sexual identity was made up several decades ago
>>8411142
This. Identity politics is bullshit.
>>8411142
Okay? But same gender attraction has existed for millenia. That's what the thread is about.
What's the essential horror reading?
Lovecraft and Poe's short stories.
King in Yellow.
Jekyll and Hyde is gr8 though I'm not sure if it's horror.

Do people honestly react like that in burgerstan? Must be nice being able to tell who's worth talking to and who isn't so easily.
>>8410809
they look at you like the picture i have uploaded
>>8410809
Yes. Also, people bully you if you get good grades and try hard in school. It's not a very intellectual-friendly place.
Why do I like this book so much? Do people here still hate on McCarthy fans? I've been gone for a few months.

Can anybody redpill me on Terry Pratchett's Discworld series?
It recently came to my attention that my mother was a big fan of the series, despite her apparent disdain for most fantasy. She never understood the popularity of the Tolkien fantasy universe, or why harry potter was as big as it was, etc. which is just confusing to me now that I have learnt this.
From my understanding, the series is more comedy focused? Though the fantastical elements seem pretty 'out-there'. Am I alone in seeing this as strange?
>>8410599
Started as a straightforward parody of D&D-style generic fantasy, developed its own setting, still with lots of comedy and genre parody. Sense of humour is a lot like Douglas Adams but with more heart and less brain.
>>8410599
The redpill is accepting that it gets samey after two or three books, specially between same protagonist entries.
Rincewind in Australia. Rincewind in China. The Egypt one lacked Rincewind, but it could have been Rincewind There too.
Still entertaining overall I guess.
You should read the first few, they're decent (for comedic fantasy). It gets a little stale later but it's a fun ride at first.
Is LoTR worth reading if I don't give a shit about high fantasy like dwarves and elves? I heard the books are pretty good as explorations of good vs evil.
>>8410593
Just watch the films.
>>8410608
The films are shit. Just read the books.
>>8410593
the books are great for grade/middle schoolers. ASOIAF is better for adults.
So, yesterday I ordered the Camp of Saints by this old salty fuck here. I picked up the name somewhere here, and just ordered it without further research.
Now that it's on its way to me I looked up some reviews and it seems that it's far more controversial and allegedly very popular among the neo-right.
I'll still read it but I have to admit that I was kind of shocked to learn that I ordered such a book "by accident".
Anybody read it, or got some stories to share about other rather controversial books?
And to think I've ordered it very much on purpose but still haven't read it yet!
>>8410566
why? Didn't you like the first few pages or did you not start reading at all?
>>8410485
I got quite interested in WW2 history when I was a kid and got my mum, who was a university librarian, to bring me home a translated copy of Mein Kampf. Got some odd, inquisitive looks from my primary school teacher the next day.
