There seems to be some conception that STALKER was vaguely inspired by Roadside Picnic, but I don't see it. Maybe in name only. Roadside Picnic did inspire a film entitled Stalker, though. It's in Russian. (You can find subbed DVDs on eBay)

As for books: Maybe McCarthy's "The Road." There's no killing of radioactive mutants, but it's still very post-apocalyptic.

Metro 2033. There are some pretty cringeworthy parts, but it's overall pretty good.
