Doris Lessing would be considered one of the greatest modern writers if not for sexism in the industry. Same for Margaret Atwood.

She gets a shitload of respect though, Atwood I mean. I like her writing but it seems disproportionate to how good her stuff actually is. Then again I'm in Canada so they probably hyper focus on her because we have like 4 writers in our entire history that mattered

What about Murnane?
He's not very famous but he's good.

Why is that? Even New Zealand has Mansfield and a few others.

is Farley Mowat considered good?I hate him

Lessing gets a ton of respect, at least in academia. Her not crossing to the mainstream is nothing to do with sexism, and everything to do with her being a bit too intellectual for the general reading public.

Mavis Gallant is Canadian and she should matter. One of my all time favorite short-story writers. But, she doesn't pander to the high-minded liberals like Atwood, and even wrote an empathetic short story about how post-WWII French people can end up aligning themselves with the far-right.
nice discusion about the book, assholes
