Finally read The Brothers Karamazov.
While I like it, there is something I don't fully understand. What was the purpose of the whole dying kid subplot?
I think it disrupted the narrative on a very interesting part of the novel, and it didn't any impact on the main plot either, the novel could have been done without it in my opinion.
>>8696348
I havent read it but it seems like meta, or not even.
Just like, yeah yeah all this stuff and drama is happening but dude... kids just are dying and stuff... how sad is that, in relation to everything else... a life with now unknown potential cut short, bummer man.... back to the action Blam! Blammo! BOOMY!
everything ever is meta bro
>>8696348
>disliking the very best part of the novel
I suggest suicide, famalam. Anyway, that segment was a direct response to Ivan's view on child suffering.
>>8696459
Sorry if I may sound dumb, but how exactly is it a direct response?
Ivan's view of child suffering was about suffering caused by others, this was a natural sickness where no one was to blame or forgive as in Ivan speech.
In order to become a great writer, does one have to be eccentric?
>>8696214
>normal people spend two hours a day making up stories
do the math kiddo
>>8696214
Everyone is fundamentally eccentric, authors just require a certain level of introspection and self honesty to reveal it
>>8696214
Not necessarily. Pynchon, Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Tolstoy are good examples of great normie writers.
Saw this at a local bookstore, and thought it looked really interesting. Currently in line with a copy; anybody read it?

Why didn't Frodo just fly the ring to Mordor on the backs of the eagles that ended up flying him out of Morder later on anyway? This seems like a gaping plot hole.
I think I once read someone on here say that it's because the Eagles aren't tame and they basically do whatever they want but you can ask them for help and if they feel like it they will
or something
Why didn't Eru just not be a dick a remove all evil in the world?

I take it back fuck Robin Hobb and soldier's son
Exact same thing the Fitz books did, draw you in with an interesting tale and then descend into misery
>>8689020
Hobb's idea of the hero's journey is one book for introduction and then a descent into misery. It's how all of her series go.
It's not fun conflict, it's just the protag being fucked by stuff they can't control over and over

>How many sides are there?
That can actually affect shit from a distance?
Probably 3, the good "gods" the bad "gods" and Orholem himself.
That are fighting? the Broken Eye group, good "gods", bad "gods", orholem?, Andross, Kip, the broken stone librarians?, etc etc.
They all have their own motives, it's only time that will tell what will happen. Last book might be split, too much shit to resolve in one book.
>It's a fact, I mused to myself, that in societies like ours sex truly represents a second system of differentiation, completely independent of money; and as a system of differentiation it functions just as mercilessly. The effects of these two systems are, furthermore, strictly equivalent. Just like unrestrained economic liberalism, and for similar reasons, sexual liberalism produces phenomena of absolute pauperization. Some men make love every day; others five or six times in their life, or never. Some make love with dozens of women; others with none. It's what's known as `the law of the market'. In an economic system where unfair dismissal is prohibited, every person more or less manages to find their place. In a sexual system where adultery is prohibited, every person more or less manages to find their bed mate. In a totally liberal sexual system certain people have a varied and exciting erotic life; others are reduced to masturbation and solitude. Economic liberalism is an extension of the domain of the struggle, its extension to all ages and all classes of society. Sexual liberalism is likewise an extension of the domain of the struggle, its extension to all ages and all classes of society. On the economic plane Raphael Tisserand belongs in the victors' camp; on the sexual plane in that of the vanquished. Certain people win on both levels; others lose on both. Businesses fight over certain young professionals; women fight over certain young men; men fight over certain young women; the trouble and strife are considerable.
What did he mean by this?
It's just the musings of an immature damaged individual.
