I'm about halfway through with Infinite Jest. It's pretty good. I have no qualms with the text itself insofar as I interpret it. Then I go and see what DFW actually said about it, how it's supposed to be all sincere and unironic and shit.

I'm not seeing it. The tone, the structure, the absurdity, the cynicism - it all reeks of irony and postmodernism. Some of the stuff, if written from a sardonic perspective is quite humorous, but if it's meant to be taken at face value, then it's just straight up bad autistic writing. Okay well not just "bad writing" - more like "writing you'd have to be as autistic as he was to take completely seriously"

It seems more like Mr FW had a bone to pick with irony, but then absolutely failed at providing anything but. Am I wrong?

you are right. anyway, i think he donĀ“t consider IJ sincere.
>>
>>8698828
It's definitely what he seemed to consider his schtick to be. Is there any reason to believe IJ had a different intent?
>>
>>8698777
IJ is full of the pain that you feel when you've lost the ability to be completely sincere in your expression. It's a humorous book but he's trying to make a sincere statement about literature and the dangers of alienation when you lose the faith in language.

I preferred Oxford. I don't think it's that big of a deal though, translation quality isn't as important if you're not dealing with something written in meter.

I recently picked up most of Bellow's works - Herzog, Ravelstein, The Actual, Seize the Day, Adventures of Augie March, Bellarossa Connection, Humboldt's Gift - I've already read Seize the Day. Is there any recommended order with which to continue?

what the hell you're bumping lmao
>>
I'd start with Middle Bellow, move on to Late and skip his early stuff entirely. He hits his stride with Herzog, which is a more compact and better statement of his concerns than Humboldt, though you should absolutely read the latter. Mr. Sammler's Planet is pleasingly cranky, as is The Dean's December. He sort of gives up on plot toward the end, but compensates with wisdom and beautiful clarity.

Prior knowledge of Delmore Schwartz and John Berryman will enhance the experience of reading Humboldt.

In sum: Herzog -> Humboldt -> Sammler. If you like those, give the late stuff a try. His letters are also fantastic and possibly a better gateway into his work than any novel.

thanks for this. been meaning to read Bellow after devouring Roth years ago but never got around to it. maybe after i'm done with what little i have left of Faulkner.

There isn't enough information given to be 100% certain most likely (2) is the patrician choice. The greatest novel would surely be based off one of the greatest lives, and life in its entirety is more immersive than a novel alone.

The only way (1) would be superior is if the author had a greater life than the subject. But why would the greatest novel in history be based on a comparatively reprehensible subject? It's unlikely.

>A good book is like a good friend

When did you realise that literature is a faggoty hobby coopted by attention whorish Buzzfeed tier women who use it as a status symbol and as a way to attract beta orbiters.

I think I'll just read the bare minimum amount of books.

This book worship masks the fact that reading takes time away from working your way out of wageslave bitch status. Of course if your a woman then that doesn't matter but can you seriously defend reading in this day and age. You literally can't.

What gets me is all of these girls who make videos about all the dozens of books they've bought, and then at the end of the month they've probably read like 2-3 books in total. Why have a youtube channel about books if you don't read them?

Pic related, she hardly reads anything.

I just read Oedipus Rex for myself, and it got me wondering: How much of Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colones and Antigone was taken directly from the original myths the plays are based on, and how much did Sophocles add on his own? It seems characters like Teiresias originally had nothing to do with Oedipus' story. Trying to find more background information on the characters often lead me to sites discussing the characters in the context of the Theban plays.

Not entirely related, but considering you've read it recently, what connection did Kreon and Teiresias have? I can't remember what it was exactly, and I was wondering cause I've just read Antigone. What profession did Kreon have in Oidipous Rex?
>>
>>8698384
No connection, really. Oidipus had sent Kreon to hear from the oracles how he could handle the plague which was ravaging Thebes. Teiresias just happened to be the oracle closest to Apollon, so Kreon brought him to Oidipus. Since Apollon is the god behind the entire mess in these plays, they spoke with Teiresias whenever they needed to consult the gods.

Kreon became Oidipus' brother-in-law, so he's just helping Oidipus as an adviser, I believe.
>>
>>8698336
Those three shouldn't be read as a trilogy as they weren't written and performed as one, like Oresteia was for example. They were written as much as 20 years apart. As for Oedipus before Sophocles, try Iliad XXIII 676, Odyssey XI 271, Pindar, Olympian II 72

Could Dorian Gray be read as a metaphor for modern NEET culture?

>Lord Henry represents anons online, feeding the NEET poisonous ideas and memes without caring about the outcome
>Basil is the NEET's parents and everyone else who has reason to care for him
>the painting is the NEET's deteriorating irl self while he pursues meaningless pleasure through online activities
>Sybil represents the NEET's inability to form relationships with women, as he is used to jacking it to idealised waifus and frogposting
>the murder of Basil is the pain the NEET causes his family
>in the end the NEET tries to abandon his toxic lifestyle and form relationships with people, but realises that he is incapable of this and kills himself
23 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Thats pretty interesting actually. How does basil creating the painting fit into this?
>>
>>8698264
The NEET's parents and friends created an ideal image of him, being handsome and happy and having an education and job.
>>
>>8698256
No, because you're operating under the premise that Dorian himself had no hand in what he became when in reality, he knew what he was doing all along. To say that Dorian Grays is analogous to the NEET is to say that DIO is the posterchild of the hikkikomori. In short, you're an idealistic idiot
