>If he’d been born south of the border, he’d be up for a Nobel Prize.
>If ‘The Last Castle’ or ‘The Dragon Masters’ had the name Italo Calvino on it, or just a foreign name, it would be received as a profound meditation.
Is this true?
As a massive Vance fan, I don't think so. He's the undisputed king of pulp and writes with excellent prose. Not Joyce levels of course, but pretty damn up there. But no matter how fun his stories are, they're not on the same level of Faulkner or Calvino.

The comment is from Michael Chabon by the way.
So, my composition101 prof. threw a curve ball - write an essay in 250 words or LESS.
How should I go about writing an interesting, persuasive essay in such few words?
There is no assigned topic. Any advice is appreciated.
>>9945937
Make a first draft, condense it until you meet the word requirement.
>>9945937
I can tell just from reading your post that you're a brainlet and don't belong on this board.
Sage

Sage isn't a downvote, and procrastination is a sign of high iq, you ponce.
Do you place old, used books alongside new ones on your bookshelves?
For fear of silverfishes I've been keeping the new and better editions apart from the rest. I also store them inside a closed cabinet to keep them away from the dust, instead of leaving them with the others on the bookshelf.
Are those good ideas or am I just being autistic?
>>9945900
I do. I feel it kind of breaks up the monotony. But nice ones. And I do have some of my more valued books behind glass, broken up by a nice paperback here and there, some quite expensive for their rarity too!
Fuck Harry Potter
Anybody got any recs that will prevent me from killing myself due to my extreme depression and anxiety attacks? I need to find something that will help me sort through my emotions. I'd prefer fiction, but creative non-fiction works too. Thanks. Pic unrelated.
Probably not. Your anxiety is too specific and personal, there is likely no handrail for this sort of thing.

Literally just stop using the internet and playing games long enough for you to either kys or try new things to find a purpose. You'll be surprised which one you'll drift toward and how you'll feel when you do it. Realize you're delusional and constantly remind yourself anytime you find those anxious thoughts kicking in. Just talk about it with someone, and take the leap of faith that is believing what they say. It's easy to dream of the dirt when you sleep on the grass, Hut building a foundation and a home, and you'll find the sky to be much more inviting.
get a job
Can egoism and becoming unspooked lead you to true happiness?
no.
you spend eternity as an autistic, edgy teenager.
does that sound like happiness?
>>9945847
But 'being happy' isn't! It's a mood. Subject to auto-destruct, sure. Comes and goes.
how fast can you read?
about as fast as I can shit out a stack of flapjacks
extremely slow
as fast as a snail, sometimes faster

I'm 50 pages in this now and does it get any better? Abaddons Gate was fantastic and had some top tier character development and conclusions also bunch of comfy Rocinante chapters. This one so far is just boring shit so far.
>>9945709
No, I hated that book enough to drop the series
Why is this the best version and why is the bible such a good book? iam really enjoying myself reading it in my 20´s with a more educated mind
I mean passages like matthew 10,34 are really good

Umm have you tried to read Ulysses? It's obvious it was never read back before he said "yeah okay it's done. time to get this baby published"
After a day roaming through the bookshelves of the Los Angels library, picking up Hegel and Heidegger cozily at random, I had contemplated briefly the possibility that I was perhaps not cut out to be a "reader". Then at Barnes and Noble I was drawn to a pamphlet sized book with name Epicures on it and revived some hope. But today was interesting. Going through a gift box from the neighbor of old books and magizines I found two copies of Harper Lee's only child To Kill and Mockingbird and holy cow this is a great fucking book, cannot put it down.

My girlfriend of 2 years left me because she chose another way of life
I need good book about finding yourself, or finding happiness. I'm going to give it to her as a gift on her birthday. I don't need propaganda that will make her want to come back to me, just a good god damned introspective book that talks about those things. It will be my final gift to her.

The Bible, KJV
