The real cause of twenty-first century man's plight is not the overdevelopment of reason or abstractness at the expense of instinct and imagination. The real cause is the universal human neurosis, which is in turn a result
of repression. Repression is a purely internal process: the true sequence is from self-repression to social repression. This self-repression is a result of that anxiety which accompanies the prolonged and helplessly
dependent infancy of the human species. Anxiety, which centers around the infant's feelings for his parents, leads to instinctual repression on the part of the infant and so to a loss of man's original instinctual unity. Life and death instincts now appear, at war with each other, and forcing man into the individual and collective neuroses of history and culture. The solution is simple: the total abolition of repression. Man must destroy his Apollonian ego, the ego of form, reason, and civilization, and create a Dionysian or body ego, "which stays in life, which is the body, and seeks to transform it." The result is to be a new man. Genital man is to become polymorphously perverse man, able to experience the world with a fully erotic body in an activity that is the equivalent of the play of childhood and living in a world that is without history or culture.
