Sage.

It's a very underrated sci fi classic in my opinion, and inspired 1984, Brave New World, and many other dystopian science fiction works to follow.

If reading is not from early childhood an established habit it is natural for people to start reading because we want to reach worldly ambitions. However reading will inevitably turn into a pleasure and if we read the great works of western literature we will soon begin to view literature as one of the highest forms of activities. It is also a solely spiritual activity, it is a way to remove ourselves from our futile search of worldly pleasures. We will find the debates about literature pointless compared to actually reading the books. In the end what someone else thinks has no meaning to you, you know what you think and what someone else thinks is somehow irrelevant. Reading is therefore a solitary activity and it will always remind us that we are lonely being who must make our own path.

Two diaries penned by Anna Nicole Smith in the early 1990s reveal a troubled young woman professing to be deeply in love with octogenarian oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, and often depressed and concerned about her weight and eating habits.
"I've been really stressed out lately and depressed and I can't quit eating. I feel like a pig," the former Playboy Playmate, who died Feb. 8, 2007 in a Florida hotel from a drug overdose, wrote in an entry dated Aug. 16, 1992.

The starlet's journals, made available exclusively to The Associated Press on Thursday, are among several pieces of Smith memorabilia going up for public auction in a few weeks by Heritage Auction Galleries of Dallas.

One diary is a purple and green Hallmark hardbound book that includes a handwritten message on the inside cover: "This diary belongs to Vickie Smith. Do Not Read!"

Smith, whose real name is Vickie Lynn Smith, noted -- in a very freeform style -- the beginning of her relationship with Paul Marciano, CEO of Guess Inc., where she eventually replaced Claudia Schiffer in the company's jeans advertisements.

"O my Gosh!! Paul Marsiano called today to see if I got his books also I'm gonna go to San Antonio to do photo shoot," she wrote on June 23, 1992. "I'm so excited!! I can't believe this. This could be it." The entry ends with five hand-drawn smiley faces.

Two days later she details a trip to a Nieman Marcus store where she bought $3,000 worth of clothing.

"I'm so happy they look great," she wrote. "I hope it empresses Paul Marsiano. ... I'm starving!! I've been starving myself."

By August, Smith revealed a disdain for eating and sex, and growing frustration with Marshall, who was 63 years older than Smith. The two married in 1994.

"I've been really stressed out lately and depressed and I can't quit eating. I feel like a pig. Howard has been buying me som jewelry but he call me 15 or 20 times a day it drives me crazy. I love him but he aggravates me somtimes," she wrote. "I don't no what to do about Paul hes strange guy. I hate for men to want sex all the time."

The entry ends with a large underlined "Chow!"

On June 13, 1992, she wrote that she was hung over and stayed home to watch a movie, adding that she "Took a Zandrex!"

An autopsy report showed Smith died at age 39 on from an accidental overdose of at least nine prescription drugs -- including a powerful sleep aid -- and that there was no foul play.
>>
Her second diary is a much smaller spiral-bound paperback Guess Kids calendar from 1994. The individual entries are not dated but describe her relationship with Marshall, who was ill and died in 1995.

"Hes so very weak and fragile When I touch him Im afraid he might break," she wrote. "If Jesus desides to take him I dont no what I'll do. I love him so much it hurts me to site and watch him when hes hurting I just want to hold him touch him let him no how much I care."

After Marshall's death, the Texas high-school dropout who became a topless dancer took her fight for his estimated $500 million fortune as far as the Supreme Court.

That ongoing battle could make her infant daughter, Dannielynn, very wealthy. Howard K. Stern, her lawyer-turned-companion, and two other men have claimed to be the baby's father.

The auction house obtained the journals from an anonymous German businessman who purchased them and other items on eBay for more than $500,000 several weeks ago.

Doug Norwine, director of music and entertainment memorabilia at Heritage, said the man decided to auction the diaries after securing the publishing rights. Opening bids will start a $20,000, Norwine said, and he expects the diaries to fetch as much as $100,000.

How is it possible that the Elric of Melnibone series always seems to be out of print? I've been trying my damnedest to find ebook versions of the core series and no copies for sale seem to exist on any site that sells to the US.

I eventually gave up on the ebooks and started looking for physical copies, and those are fucking out of print in America too.

My local bookstores don't have them, and the used copies on Amazon (the only ones available) are going for stupidly inflated prices.

I thought this shit was supposed to be extremely popular and influential, like directly inspired The Witcher and SOIAF series levels of influential yet you can't buy them anywhere.

I have them. They *are* enormously influential but they're also terrible. Moorcock's prose style is tedious. Same as Lovecraft; great ideas but bad writing.
>>
Also, Moorcock is still alive and famously a prick about his intellectual property so probably isn't very helpful when people come to him asking to reprint them.

I managed to read a portion of the first one and it's actually because of the writing style that I'm trying to seek the rest of the series out. I usually hate fantasy because the prose always ends up making me feel like I'm wasting my time.

> The Fellowship of the Ring - got right around the part where Frodo moves out of Bag End and to a new smaller house (1/3 of the way in and the book hasn't even fucking started yet) and thought to myself "jesus christ, is the whole book like this?" and never picked it back up.

> The Dark Tower Series - got all the way through to the end of the last book (through awkward dialog, bad story decisions and the completely out of place 4th wall breaking) and the final 100 pages ruined the whole damn thing.

> A Game of Thrones - got halfway through and thought "they're still on the fucking King's Road?" and dropped it like a rock.

From what I read of the first Elric book, Moorcock's style is the polar opposite of Tolkien and Martin - no pointless extra bullshit, no devoting pages and pages and pages to shit irrelevant to the plot, just stripped down and fun to read. The guy that turned me on to the series says this is because the series started as pulp paperbacks.

Why do I lack strong opinions? Are there any books about this feel?

I used to be super /pol/-tier right wing but now Im thinking about viewpoints but I cant really subscribe to any one ideology or fully agree with any one thing. Even individual issues have so many different ways to be looked at
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>9087371
Everything is ideology, which mean that no ideology can be evaluated from an objective standpoint. You should instead think of ideology as a way of making sense of the world and your place in it. So just try different things on for size and see what fits you best. And if after a while it gets worn out, try something else.
>>
start from the ground up.

Ask yourself if there is any one thing that you still strongly believe. Test that belief in all ways you can, not by asking dumb metaphysical questions like 'what is truth' or "who am I to feel strongly about it" but by searching to see if there is any way that the belief is contradictory or can be disproven by data that actually exists

You don't need to subscribe to an ideology or school of thought to have strong organic opinions, and often it only weakens your own moral base. Read Descartes's Rules for the Direction of the Mind and try to discipline your thoughts. Often you can pick up from popular culture and philosophical arguments a sort of malaise and start fearing that there is no way to be self-secure in a belief due to the fact that all beliefs are called into question. This is untrue. Any belief that can withstand questioning is only made stronger. You need to practice questioning your beliefs in a holistic, productive way.

labels are limitations. anyone and i mean ANYONE who describes themselves as /pol/-tier right wing needs to get off 4chan and go outside

Your paradigm is basically egocentric wankery that has zero room for growth via art. Do you honestly believe that all aesthetic enjoyment is qualitatively the same or have you just adopted an easy opt-out position that allows you to put yourself smugly above any effort to overcome oneself and feel good about mindlessly consuming the cultural equivalent of cud specifically designed by a team of very well paid professionals with express purpose to extract money from hapless imbeciles such as yourself? I am sick and tired of this. Every day I come to /lit/, and every day there is at least one thread up with an OP image of an attractive woman dressed scantily and posing seductively. It's probably the same one or two people who do it honestly. Let me tell you something, you faggot pieces of shit who are doing this: you are the poster child for everything that is wrong in literature, art, and society as a whole today. You are incapable of coming up with anything creative, thought provoking, or of substance, and you lack even the smallest modicum of intelligence, so you use "style" and "flash" and pizazz in place of it and to draw attention to yourself, because that's the only way your SHIT "creation" and ideas would ever get seen by anyone. And before you say anything, this has NOTHING to do with the fact that I don't have a girlfriend. Anyway, I will be petitioning the owner of this website to ban your asses, so enjoy being able to post here while it lasts, because it's not going to last long, just like you that one time you convinced an obese girl to let you fuck her.

Tao Lin's Taipei narrated by Kirby Heyborne is a perfect match; I already read the book through once and wanted to just have it on while I commuted and his inflection and manner of dissecting Lin's meandering sentences really made me appreciate the text more than just imagining it read in Lin's typical monotone.

What is the word for getting justice, and then some?

For example, if somebody kills your mother, some would say it is justice to also kill his mother (or imprison him). What if, in response to the death of your mother, you kill his entire family, all his friends and then murder

What is the word use to describe that? Not revenge

I am going to purchase my first philosophy book tomorrow on a trip to Barnes and Noble and am curious as to what might be ideal to buy.
