Start reading short stories. Short and sweet, masterful writing. little commitment.

What does /lit/ read just for fun? Or is it all seriousness?
Lovecraft and comic books
Old pulp noir books too.
>>9085376
Reading for fun is what normalfags do. The only reason a true /lit/izen reads is to feel smug about it on an anime image board.
What's more likely, that someone spends hundreds of hours a year reading things they don't enjoy, and that we shape an enormous part of our lives for the very chance (though it's never actuated because you never meet people who read what you do) to impress people, or that we have fun reading the books we do?
I keep seeing this. Is it any good or is this shitposting?
It's a shitty book but this is /lit/ and all you have to do to convince us a book is worth money and praise is to tell us it's postmodern and has a high page count.

Is it supposed to be like infinite jest?

Don't forget it needs to have a nice book cover for /shelf/ threads.
Horror Thread
Horror in my opinion is one of the most underappreciated genres on the planet. When one who isn't very well acquainted with the genre thinks "horror" they think Stephen King dime novels and the money sponge abortions that hollywood pumps out every week. Personally I think the concept of fear and the unknown are incredibly interesting subjects to read about.
Lets have a thread dedicated to horror as a genre and the geniuses who influenced it. (Lovecraft, Poe, Blackwood, Stoker, Shelly, ect)
Literature Thread
Literature in my opinion is one of the most underappreciated genres on the planet. When one who isn't very well acquainted with the genre thinks "literature" they think Shakespeare plays and the complex works the Greeks produced. Personally I think the concept of good writing is incredibly interesting subjects to read about.
Lets have a thread dedicated to literature as a genre and the geniuses who influenced it. (Homer, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Dante, ect)
Redhook was lovecrafts best short story
king is a long winded hack
House on the Borderland is the best horror story of all time

This is one of greatest works of literature EVER. Prove me wrong.
Yes I'd like to solve
>>9085295
It's a comic book. You might argue for it being the best piece of art, but it is automatically not as good a piece of literature that uses words to do what Maus relies on pictures for.
>>9085309
It is depressing--but it forces you to come face to face with your own mortality.
Let's get one of these thread going.
So, what have you read recently /lit/?

Looking for some suggestions on Samurai books. Fictional or nonfictional i guess. I'm looking to write a script based on them and looking for suggestions on books that shows a good glimpse into what goes on in their lives were like.
I just recently bought this, its been pretty good and insightful so far, but im looking to see if theres something that just helps give more of a focus on samurai lives and what they go through. I'm not even half way through this book so im sure ill get more insight but im just looking to see if anyone has any better suggestions for me to look into.
Thanks in advance.
>>9084966
That's tough because samurai lived differently throughout history.
Book of Five Rings
Tale of the Heike
Just read the Hagakure
For Samurai during the Sengoku/Edo periods, try Shogun for fiction, and Everyday Life in Traditional Japan by Charles J. Dunn for information on their daily lives. (Along with many other citizens like doctors, farmers, etc)
Cleary's Soul of the Samurai, I guess a counterpart for that could also be of use to you.
Hi, /lit/.
First time poster here, looking for advice on good fantasy series. I'm leaning on Malazan book of the fallen, but I'm not quite sure how I'll handle the magnitude of the series. I'd appreciate any recommendations.
read titus groan

Thanks for the suggestion. You don't like talking about fantasy books around here or what?
I used to read a lot of fantasy and science fiction before I got into literature, and Malazan is the only series I will ever revisit. Get passed the first book before giving up, it's absolute shit in comparison to the rest of the series. It's worth reading anon.
There's a containment thread for these questions, I suggest you find it. You won't get any real answers otherwise.

Have you guys read his work? I never saw a discussion about him here...
I've read the Gutenberg Galaxy and understanding media, as well as a few of his essays. He is certainly one of the most original thinkers I've ever read, there's so many interesting thoughts and points throughout his work. His thoughts on electronic technology and its light speed were very much prescient if you just look around what the hell is happening at the moment.
>>9084961
I'm reading understanding media for the second time. It's one of those books that's a consecution of interesting and engaging ideas, like Becker's Denial of Death. I'm surprised /lit/ is not discussing him more.
>>9085023
Each chapter of understanding media has something in it that makes you put the book down and think about it for a while, I think a second read through you will get a lot more out of it because I found I didn't really fully grasp mcluhan's style and his metaphors until i got towards the end of my first read.
What's the best biography/autobiography you've ever read?
Waiting on pic relateds
