Who else here learning other languages?

I've been trying to teach myself some latin. Mostly reading, I don't see myself ever needing to use it in day to day language
Also the idea of me trying to engage in conversation with someone in Latin makes me feel nauseated.

What are you guys all learning?

Don't start with Aeneid, or latin poetry in general, this shit will fuck you up. Read simple things like historical documents or The Bible

Learning Greek currently, I got
https://www.amazon.com/Learn-Ancient-Greek-Latin-Language/dp/0715627589

It's a really great book that introduces things wonderfully, especially for a language nothing like English. He does a good job of joking around a bit as well to keep things from getting dry and setting it down.

He made one for Latin as well, maybe you should check it out.

Don't worry, that image is what I hope to aspire to read, i'm just reading children's books in latin at the moment.

Cheers man, do you think buying a professionally compiled book is better than trying a scattered resource method online?

Are you reading Gravity’s Rainbow? Have you started and then stopped out of frustration, confusion, laziness? Have questions about the plot, themes, context, references? Want input on interpreting a specific\section of text? Think the book is a big bullshit meme? Think Pynchon is for hipsters? Haven’t ever touched the book but are curious?

Well, then this is the thread for you! I will field any questions you have and share with you all that I know about this fascinating, beautiful, and terrifying work.

I haven’t read GR in a couple of years, but I’m about to start another read through. I’ve read the first 200-300 pages many more times than I’ve read the last 400 or so. There are probably about 40 pages of really, really difficult material, some of which I still can’t parse, but I’ll give you my impression of whatever. The best thing you can do is to jump in and feel like you’re drowning. I first peeked at the book when I was 17/18 and didn’t finish it till I was 25/26. Also, make sure GR is your first Pynchon novel; don’t try and “ease into it” with 49 or Vineland.

I will accept nothing less than the total conversion of the browsing population.

How'd he fit through the toilet?
>>
I ordered some weeks ago and it should arrive soon
I will read it in english even tho it isnt my native language, first big novel I will be reading not in my native language
I dont know anything about STEM and it seems like the book is full of that
Overall it seems like it will be a pain in the ass to read, but I want to get the memes and I like to have a challenge, reading just whatever you enjoy is for neurotypical normies

Any tips?

Toilets were a lot bigger back then. Most people don't realize that.

That passage is also metaphorical hallucination in which Slothrop conceives of his prewar life, his drafting, his deployment, and that final bit I'm really not sure about.

It's solipsistic and cartoonish. Vividly western and American. But it doesn't really fit with how the preceding fantasies.

It's not easy going. Kind of sears something into you and is very intensely emotionally and even physically painful to study. Just attempting to really get your head up into Kabbalah, for instance, at all (and you never 'master' anything, by the way, but strive to undertake some small fraction of a journey) literally hurts your brain... and it feels wrong somehow, like it's remapping the codes of reality for you at such broken down level that it feels sacrilegious, and probably is.

The real significance is that it's about, through practice and study becoming more actively aware of the inner life (not in terms you can really intellectualize this, but it's slowly achieved through contemplation of the metaphors and mysteries it uses and personal growth, in a painful and poetically systematized way). 'Magic', as an intent for this stuff, is crass by the way and incredibly damaging because it's a cheap and cowardly attempt by more wayward types to attempt to game these traditions somehow.

I've had an ongoing study for a long time that began in more loose and playful dabbling in consciousness and then a much more intensive study later on. At this point I don't believe that a relationship with God or any advantage spiritually is gained through esoteric practice, but that salvation is free, and while I'm still interested and kind of dip my toes in the esoteric, it's in more of a passive way just in that I experience reality from that perspective so everything operates from there, but I'm no longer intensely studying it.

My view... it's not for everyone, and probably not advisable at all. Will more likely than not really corrupt you. Just look at occultists these days after all. Largely VERY damaged people.

If you're interested in non-corrupted mysticism, if it's actually for you and not just some thing to fuck around with, I'd say go for Orthodox Christianity. It's the same Mystery knowledge take on things but without the corrupted theology.

This is actually a really good recommendation. It does what it says on the tin, and it works.

People criticize it for being sleazy and manipulative. Firstly, this is often exaggerated. It's basically just a guide to social interaction for autists. Secondly, it doesn't purport to be a moral guide to good relationships. It says right in the title that it's about winning friends and influencing people. If that's what you want to do, the book is foolproof.

Discworld's probably the comfiest fantasy series out there, right up there with Lord of the Rings. I don't think enough of /lit/ has taken the time out of their ***patrician reading schedule*** that they should to check it out, so I figured I'd start this reading group.

We'll be starting with Wyrd Sisters. It introduces a lot of unfamiliar concepts and characters of Discworld with a familiar story: it's a lampoon of Macbeth. From there, we'll read Guards, Guards!, Pyramids, Moving Pictures, and Reaper Man. This is so we can go back and read the first five books of the series more comfortably: they're great novels, but they're very much Pratchett's juvenalia and as a newcomer they're not the best entrance into the Discworld series. After that, we'll more or less read the series in order of publication supplemented with short stories and other media.

Alternatively, we could just go in order of publication and see how Pratchett's writing style and taste evolves over the course of those first 10-12 books, but seeing as I'm really trying to turn you guys onto Discworld I wouldn't recommend that. It's up to you guys, really. I have reading schedules for Wyrd Sisters and The Colour of Magic (the first published novel) planned whichever one you guys choose.

One final thing: We'll be taking periodic week-long breaks so you guys can digest other books, but these weeks will have supplemental material, as I mentioned before.
