Memes aside, what are your thoughts on the writing of Susan Sontag?
In America receiving an NBA was a disgrace.
Her essays aren't bad.
>>9240524
Elaborate?
The first installment of her journals from the '40s to the early '60s is incredible, she was pure /lit/.
A lot of On Photography seems superficial to me.

Damn
Imagine you have a novel that is literaly perfect, and at climactic events you have a page-turn to a two page image graphically showing what you mean in an impactuful way. Would this be looked down upon by literary critics, or would this indeed be a good way of conveying a mental image to the reader?

Which edition of the comedy?

Anyone who wants to talk shit about transmedial works or well-placed pictures in books needs to read some fucking Sebald.
Everyday must be a good day.
If you are sad and see your sky grey,
I've got good news for you:
Jesus wants to be your friend!
Four chan is a place
for people who don't like to be recognized.
Your identity can be him, Jesus,
that's my identity, Him.
Somebody can appreciate my art?
The Romans, of nobility and power.
Strung Jesus up as his fellow Jews cowered
A g-d killed by men, with mother so whorish
But he was loved by them, and at his feet they still worship
Their God of resentment and weakness demands their submission
And in their fear and their meekness they are true christians
My girlfriend's brother wanted me to critique his story. Any opinions? Here's a taste of it, if you want moar, let me know.
>Day 7
>One day randomly a person named Josh was randomly looking online for presents because it was his and his girlfriend's anniversary in 7 days! But. he never knew what to get Tiffany. So he wondered all day long of what to get her and how much to spend because he has never been nice to anybody much just like the people at school he always bullied them except for his friends and her. So after another day of trying to find something for Tiffany he gave up and went on his Email to see if there was anything there for help. Josh logged in and there was! He read it and it said, “new free gift at the heart of the mountain of the town. But there was a cost,” when he saw it said it had a cost he didn’t care so he replied, “I will do your mission for the gift.” The person online who sent him the email replied instantly and Josh saw the subject was a warning so he shut his computer and called all of his friends to come and help him find it. After he called his friends (Mary, Betty, David, and Ryan) all of them agreed to come along with him. They all met up and went on their journey to the present!
Well did they get the fucking present or not.
>Day 6
>While they tried and tried to get to the mountain which they had to go through the a lot of terrain with different biomes. A quarter way through the way Mary started to get very very sick and she had symptoms such as coughing, fever, limbs randomly fall off, etc. The very first limb to fall off were all of her fingers. When this happened she didn’t care so they kept on walking. An hour or two passed and now one of her hands fell off and some toes. Eventually it got to the point when full limbs were falling off like her arms and legs. So she had to go back but one of the symptoms were that she died instantly but it was the rarest symptom and it happened she said, “I think I-” and died on the spot. So after Mary died they didn’t keep going so they just stayed in the desert with a fire and they brought supplies when they called each other such as water and food and sleeping bags. 5 went in 1 died.
Stay tuned and we'll find out if they get the present

Just finished Stoner, lads. Jesus Christ I couldn't take those feels.
>>9240121
>“In his extreme youth Stoner had thought of love as an absolute state of being to which, if one were lucky, one might find access; in his maturity he had decided it was the heaven of a false religion, toward which one ought to gaze with an amused disbelief, a gently familiar contempt, and an embarrassed nostalgia. Now in his middle age he began to know that it was neither a state of grace nor an illusion; he saw it as a human act of becoming, a condition that was invented and modified moment by moment and day by day, by the will and the intelligence and the heart.”
>>9240121
By all accounts he lived a good life. Went to a good school, stayed there for his entire life in relative comfort, exercised some degree of competence in his field.
His family life might have been sad but he still experienced a lot of joy in fatherhood.
>>9240183
He was surrounded by sadness in his life. He could never find love with Edith and whenever he found that with Katherine it was taken away from him. Having Grace being taking away from him and grow farther away from him in front of his own eyes. There were many times when he was unhappy at the university as well. It was his only escape and he wasn't always content there. That's why the moments when he really enjoys teaching are so impactful.
There is also such strong regret at the end until he body and mind aren't bothered to think on it. What if he had been stronger or loved Edith more? Grace's situation is depressing af.
Remind me why Harry Potter is supposed to be bad again? Not a work of art, sure, but it's at least a commendable achievement of fiction. At worst, it's inoffensive.
Because if it's not the greatest achievement of mankind it's total garbage. That's just natural, scientifically logical fact.
>it's inoffensive.
I'm offended by her lack of creativity or imagination.
In the hands of a proper writer, this had tremendous potential. The concept is old and cliched, but with the proper technique and imagination, both of which are absent in Rowling, this could have been so much more than a YA high school drama.
Doesn't matter though, lit would have still shat on it.
What do you guys think of this book?
I never come to this board, and I don't read books at all, but I want to start getting into reading again.
How is Bukowski's poetry?
>>9239977
>I never come to this board, and I don't read books at all
And it really shows lad.
Bukowski is what pretentious plebs read to feel like they have lived.
>>9239982
Thanks, so is everyone on /lit/ so unwelcoming or is it just you?
I'll disregard your opinion since you seem void of anything but hate.
>>9240010
>you seem void of anything but hate.
You're going to love Bukowski.
/lit/, March is wasted fourteen days.
tis
are we killing Caesar or what
After spending10 ten10 SEXY years in Ga(y)ul, FUCKING the barbarians with their legions of spear wielding soldiers, General Caesar brought his boys back to Rome, unprotected. The Senate, and Pompey didn't want to take so many dangerous men inside all at once, and told Caesar to break his little orgy up. Caesar, of course, noticed that Pompey still had his ripped, oiled, glistening soldiers ready to go, and quickly stated "What? Are my men uglier than yours, Great Pompey?" Pompey, queeny bitch that he is, took this for a sign of war, and began preparations. What he didn't account for, however, was the Cock of Caesar, which was so great, so holy, so powerful, that it 1won1 him all his battles, and made him emperor of Rome. Ironically, though his beauty could give others life, his own was taken by jealous senate bitches, envying his beauty and power, and cock. Send this to 20of your NASTIEST gladiators. Get 0 back and you're a real pathetic plebian! Get 5 back and you're a Horse-Cocked Equestrian! Get 10 back and you're a Pussifex Maximus! Get 15 back and you've got a Consul Cunt! Get 20 back and you're Orgasmic Octavian!
Anyone here read this book? Thoughts?
>>9239922
Yes, it was better than i expected even if the entire concept made me feel funny inside.
I cant really imagine a world like that
Reading it now, it's really good
>>9239971
IMO the part when they travel across the ice was the best part for a couple of reasons.
That's when genly really changed and the reader got to experience what he was internalizing.
Tied together at least one short story that I remember. (the guy that killed a son and then arrives at the fathers cabin needing help.
Together we can get it's not only a story flat story about gender, but about acceptance and forgivness.
But when reading other peoples opinions they seem to regard that part as the worst/most boring.
No novel has come close to how brilliant this is
Prove me wrong
>or The Whale
Well which is it?
Reading it right now. Melville's prose is divine. Also, the part at the beginning where Ishmael sleeps with queequog had me cracking up like no book has done for a long time.
>>9239954
>Melville's prose is divine
Divine? As in he puts you in a state of awe, like standing before God himself?
I bet you say "sublime" too, you ass.
