Imagine you have a novel that is literaly perfect, and at climactic events you have a page-turn to a two page image graphically showing what you mean in an impactuful way. Would this be looked down upon by literary critics, or would this indeed be a good way of conveying a mental image to the reader?

Plenty of quality editions of classics have some artwork in them. There's literally nothing wrong with it. I have an edition of the Divine Comedy with a lot of William Blake's illustrations in it, and it's a nice addition
