I have always been interested in this type of weapon from the dark ages; not because they look nice, but because I have always wondered how you should properly use it and in what situations they have an advantage.
The thing that has always bothered me is that you are supossed to use it both handed and therfore it leaves you with no shield to protect you. Yes, you can still use the sword to block attacks, but the incoming hit must be comming from a somewhat specific angle and it must not be that heavy. (This means maces and spears will fuck you up).
Also, swords are meant to kill you by slashing or stabbing you, so why make it heavier and therefore slower?
The advantage I can see to this weapon is that you have an advantage in range (unless you are fighting a spear) and you have a middle-ground between a sword and a mace.
Maybe it soldiers in horses could have taken advantage of this? But then you would have to use only one hand making the handling quite hard.
So /k/, what do you think?

Nah. It requires a single shot weapon, that's super limiting. It'd be way easier to just carry enough ammo to supply yourself in muh SHTF. Carry common calibers and you're still set to trade/pickup. Ultimate "do-it-all" survival rifle would probably be an AR-15 with an extra drop in .22lr bolt. Carry some heavy 5.56mm for game, some cheap 5.56mm for general use, and .22lr for light small game.

I'm going to Air Force BMT in a few months and I'd like to prepare in any way I can. I know I'll have to qualify on the M-16 and the M-9. If I can get an expert rating and the small arms ribbon while I'm there, so much the better. I've never fired a gun in my life. How much training do you think I'd need to do before hand to get a leg up on this?
