What was the classical religion of Ancient Rome like, in practice?

Did they literally think Zeus/Jupiter lived ontop of a mountain and threw lightening or was it allegorical? What were the practices? Were there sacred texts or was it more of an oral tradition?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
They definitely believed in the gods, but they weren't really dogmatically faithful as a modern person would understand faith. They believed the gods required certain rituals and respect, but not much else besides that. It wasn't important to spread the word of Zeus or Athena or whatever, as much as it was important to make sure there weren't any dead birds in Athena's temple and that the statues were in good condition.
>>
It was actually a collection of sects focused almost exclusively on making sure that the gods were never pissed off.

What I mean is that in many theistic religions, there's a focus on constant worship, whether the gods were happy or not. In the grecco-roman sects, worship happened seasonally unless you felt the gods were pissed at you and then you worshiped extra hard but, for the most part, you lived your daily life with a belief of the gods and just a general hope that they wouldn't shit on you.

Should I read a bunch of more modern stuff before jumping into Gibbon's Decline and fall? Should I read it at all? Regardless, are there any other works regarding the fall of Rome that are required reading?

Most modern works are influenced by the decline and fall, so you don't need to. However, it is important to remember that Rome never really "fell", it just sort of faded away sometime in the early middle ages.

Is it plausible that another being brought us mathematics long ago? How did we come up with numbers and all the do-hickey symbols that mean multiplication or division or other symbols that have mathematical meaning.

Is that what happened in our history? How can humans have come up with math on their own?

Is it correct that Gallileo was actually anti intellectual in the sense that his proposals did not follow the accepted methodology?
Him being the equivalent of someone today making claims about some field without doing research(as an example)?
The catholic church not supressing ideas(they had no problem with research) but simply following the accepted norms methodologies and standards of accepting new information as correct.
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
No, I don't think so. I'm catholic an agree that the popular conception of the Galileo affair is biased, but in favorite empiricism over scholastic theory Gallileo was not acting anti-intellectually. He was very impolite and hasty but challenging the current academic paradigm because you think it could be more rigorous and grounded in observations doesn't make you an anti-intellectual.
>>
>>563920
But that is only in retrospect since we now think that the modern scientific method is better(and galilleos way of doing things was closer to it).
Imagine these days if someone made claims not based on the methodologies we accept as the scientific method?
Why should the church have accepted his new method? big institutions must be conservative and not jump on any new thing because they risk spending a lot of resources on incorrect rash ideas.

yes. a high-ranking church official even sent him a letter explaining that he was free to continue hypothesising, but he was not allowed to continue claiming that he was right (because he had no real evidence that he was). galileo ignored the letter.

why didn't he have any real evidence? well there's a few reasons. he was claiming that the earth revolved around the sun and basing this claim on observations of the moons of jupiter that he had discovered via telescope.

one problem was that nobody understood how telescopes worked and therefore if what he saw was real. but the big problem was that even if you did believe his discovery was real then it didn't mean that the earth revolved around the sun because moons around jupiter were compatible with the then current model of the solar system (the tychonic model). on the other hand if the earth did move around the sun then all the physics of that time no longer made sense (like, if the earth was moving then why didn't it leave the clouds behind? remember, this is pre-gravity).

Scandinavian countries (as well as Iceland) all abolished slavery before the year 1400 and were quick to institute social democracy. By contrast, many influential fascist thinkers as well as a not insignificant percentage of the Nazi leadership were composed of Southern and Central Europeans. Why is this?

Enlighten me on Musalmiyah, Sajah bint al-Harith and other people claiming priesthood around the time of Muhammad.

Doesn't that show that Muhammad was simply the most successful of many similar claimants around the time of a great social upheaval in Arabia?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>the most successful

No, more like just the luckiest one. The competing prophets of early Islam just show that Muhammed was merely voicing something that was in the air at the time in Arabia.

If you lived in Arabia in the 7th century, and you knew about the Byzantine Empire and Persian Empire being involved in an all consuming war, I figure that apocalyptic screeds about God ending the world very soon will seem pretty convincing. Same thing happened in the nihilistic hell of post-invasion Iraq, that's where ISIS get their popularity from

>I figure that apocalyptic screeds about God ending the world

Arabia was largely spared any destruction. Rather, the titanic war between the Byzantines and Persians caused both empires to pull out from supporting various client petty kingdoms in Arabia. Without their patrons' gold and armies, the old Arab rulers quickly lost their authority. The power vacuum was filled by various warlords who sought to legitimize their power by claiming divine favor.
>>
>>563586
No as Maududi suggested, an ideology like Hegel's (ie History needed a religious social and political reform on the eve of Islam) might have made a change necessary but only God could have produced the specific reform needed.

Besides most of these people popped up after Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and were copying him by trying to perform similar miracles, producing their own holy books in a Quranic style and even trying to gain legitimacy as a partner or successor of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم

An interesting point is that their therewere a few claimants to Messiah-ship before and after Jesus which is an equally interesting question to be investigated.

KIA? Plenty. Assassinated? Well, I can remember General Vatutin who accidentally drove into positions of Ukrainian nationalist partisans with the small amount of people guarding him and promptly got killed but that thing was more of a huge accidental turn of events more than anything as neither party expected the other to be there.
>>
>>563336

Depending on how you define "the field".

Lots of German officers were assassinated in Poland during the WW2 in retaliation for their atrocities. The most prominent was the assassination of SS general Franz Kutschera, commander of all SS units in Warsaw. Kutschera was shot dead together with his chauffeur. It was an utter shock to the Germans because Kutschera was known for extremely tight security measures. The assassination took place within the sealed-off German District, a part of Warsaw for the exclusive use of Germans. A sort of second ghetto, only this one was luxurious one. From then on, the German terror was much smaller simply because they knew they weren't safe.

To put it into perspective - killing Kutschera within the German district would be an equivalent to Iraqis killing a top US general in the middle of Green Zone in Baghdad.

Religion can really draw people to the single-mindedness and selflessness that can make living communally work well. Not only having the idea of something bigger and more important than one's self to guide you, but living in a small enough community to affirm that those around you feel selfless as well sounds like a perfect way to live. Of course, not everyone can live like that but still...

Hope you find success in wherever you feel called.
