Were you born in the Age of Exploration, which course and/or education would you pursue?

Either into the Empty Quarter or the American frontier.
Reaching the Poles were the true golden age of exploration, but I ain't dealing with all that ice and shit.
>>
>>576674
I honestly dont think I'd do any exploration at all.
I am into history, and have spare money, but I never traveled to see Rome or Vienna or Istanbul, despite being near them.
I can go visit any of the old european towns for the weekend, and choose not to, for years now.

I like lazy history. Sitting at home in front of the PC history, or reading in bed history.
Not exploration, and not going outside. There are bears outside. And immigrants.

Can art be saved?

Art doesn't need saving.

Modern art is quite nice. Don't like it? Then enjoy other kinds of art that's still being made.

is social beauty standards a meme?
I agree that they vary, but not to any significant degree, it seems to me that most core values are pretty damn consistent and all claims otherwise are rather unscientific extrapolations based on little evidence.
40 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Taste is taste and can vary wildly but underneath whatever social constructs of beauty exist (for example, in several countries blackened teeth were considered a beautiful trait for women) is the dick and the lizard-brain doing whatever the fuck they want which is why it's as easy for an Emperor to get a diamond-cutter from some bright-eyed peasant girl bending over in a field as his extensive stable of literally the best pussy available.
>>
It's hard to say. For a good chunk of history people were looking to a past definition of beauty (see: Renaissance, Romanticists, etc), so we would need to look at what the original definition was and how that came to be. If we, for example, take Grecian standards, there wasn't nearly enough food to be obese, so their definition of beauty is skewed compared to our modern lifestyle or standards. If you break it down further to "just skinny people", there are a wide number of different types of beauty in your image, noticeably facial structure, skin tone, social class, and beliefs.

Point being, your initial claim that beauty standards have been consistent is, at best, grossly disingenuous and lacking context.
>>
My personal observation was that beauty is like a materialization of something that is symbolic, emotional and practical in which the exact identity or emphasis of those essences are constructed by individual and groups from their own experience and reflections. Just like how certain social issues may be more important or relevant to a number of people and lesser so to others, it is practical and ideal to strive to act towards the resolution of those issues. So yes, I think I'm putting more emphasis on superego than id in Freudian term when it comes to beauty and thus it should be divided into groups of people who had similar standard of beauties and their common social or personal characteristics. Speaking of which, I'm not very familiar with studies on beauty, so is there any interesting reads relating to this?

What was the exactly point in which the Soviet Union become an oppressive regime?

Was it during the October Revolution?

The disbanding of the Constituent Assembly and the quelling of Kronstadt?

Stalin's rise to power and the NEP?

It's formation
>>
>>576047
The failure of the German revolution managed to bring out all of the 'conservative' elements of the political field in the USSR and facilitated Stalin's rise to power. I would argue that it was this that marked the transition to a deformed workers state, which would then transition to a state capitalist nation after Stalin's death.
>>
>>576078
I should add that the USSR was equally doomed to authoritarianism by the civil war and foreign intervention occurring at the same time as the failed German revolution.

Why was this defence not accepted at Nürnberger Trials?
After all, if you disobeyed orders in nazi military, you would get executed, and somebody else would obey these orders, meaning you died for nothing.

Nope. This has been proven many, many times to not be the case.

1. "JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS" IS NOT A JUSTIFICATION FOR ANYTHING.

2. THE "NUREMBERG TRIALS" WERE A FARCE.

What was worse: Europe's rape of the Americas? Or Europe's rape of Africa?

Europe's rate of the Americas, by a vast margin.

The colonization of Africa was not only pretty peaceful but also resulted in unprecedented improvements in every aspect of life all across Africa. Whereas the colonization of the Americas was very underhanded and brutal.

If by rape you mean building cities, roads, hospitals, schools...

Anybody else feel guilty for the burning of Persepolis by Alexander the Great even though you're not Greek or Macedonian, but because you're white?

Because I kind of do.
26 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
This is bait, right?
>>
Not sure if bait or not. To answer your question: no, I have no guilt when it comes to the actions of others of my race. I don't see the point of feeling guilt for the actions of others simply because you share the racial make-up of the perpetrators. Why feel guilt for things you did not commit?
>>
>>575662

Also Alexander was a Macedonian Greek, IE not white.

Suppose in some distant forest lightning strikes a dead tree, resulting in a forest fire. In the fire a fawn is trapped, horribly burned, and lies in terrible agony for several days before death relieves its suffering. So far as we can see, the fawn’s intense suffering is pointless. For there does not appear to be any greater good such that the prevention of the fawn’s suffering would require either the loss of that good or the occurrence of an evil equally bad or worse. Nor does there seem to be any equally bad or worse evil so connected to the fawn’s suffering that it would have had to occur had the fawn’s suffering been prevented. Could an omnipotent, omniscient being have prevented the fawn’s apparently pointless suffering? The answer is obvious, as even the theist will insist. An omnipotent, omniscient being could have easily prevented the fawn from being horribly burned, or, given the burning, could have spared the fawn the intense suffering by quickly ending its life, rather than allowing the fawn to lie in terrible agony for several days. Since the fawn’s intense suffering was preventable and, so far as we can see, pointless, doesn’t it appear that … there do exist instances of intense suffering which an omnipotent, omniscient being could have prevented without thereby losing some greater good or permitting some evil equally bad or worse?
