So, you're in a large store like walmart, and you suddenly realize you are going to be teleported to the time of the Roman Monarchy. You can grab a couple things before you go. What do you take and why?
OP here, I'd take as much aluminium foil as possible because at the time that shit was super hard to get.
A Tablet, then they worship me like god

How can free will exist if God knows everything you do before you do it?
If God doesn't know everything, how is he omniscient?
How does someone knowing what you will do in any way negate free will?
>>799618
>How can free will exist if God knows everything you do before you do it?
Same way free will is compatible with when our own imperfect knowledge.
Pic related: If I successfully predict someone's weak trolling tactics, does that mean that they were not free in their decision to shitpost?

God doesn't exist.
Also free will is a meme.

Why is Asian mythology so fucking weird? I'm inclined to agree with Hegel the more I read about Asian religion: it's all just lost in a sea of abstraction where the indeterminate universal is replaced by determinate quantities that fail to rise to the levels of sublime beauty attained in Western religion. This is probably because Westerners care more about religion than Easterners do, just as a consequence of monotheism.
>The Roman and Greek pantheons weren't gods fucking with mortals and doing petty shit.
>>799519
>sublime beauty attained in Western religion
Which is?
Please tell me. Last I heard the West is worshipping some Eastern God.

>This is probably because Westerners care more about religion than Easterners do, just as a consequence of monotheism.
That's why Europe is being kucked by Muslims right now?
Why was modern antisemitism created in France?
Because the Jews caused the French Revolution
>>799321
"Anti semitism" has existed as long as the Jews have existed.
>>799321
Because the French got a bug up their ass about creating a society of free, equal frenchmen out of a nation where only a small minority spoke French, and the Jews were a fly in the ointment.
can we predict anything interesting from knowing the starch staple of a culture
>>798890

So they say that Satan is very deceiving. So what if he deceived all of humanity by writing the bible and pretending to be God? What if the real God's plan was to stay secret until after death to bring everyone to hell, which is the actual place of paradise, but because Satan has deceived us, he tells us we want to go to heaven, which is actually a place of torture?
yeah dude. WHAT IF
>>798801
How do people explain tnat part about nonchristian virteous people going to hell anyway?
Did Mohammed exist?
>>798455

But he was no illiterate like Muslims like to think.
>>798455
Sure, there are non-Muslim eyewitness accounts of him.

>muh genocide
>>798446
Declared total war on the World for muh lebensraum and revenge for WW I when in 1939 they had more land than in 1914. They got austria, they got bohemia, almost all of versailles punitive measures were abandoned. They did know where to stop.
If Germans were civilised people and not barbaric teutons appeasement would've worked.
How can you tell if you're a reprobate? (in the Christian sense)

Pitch a show, movie, play, book, game, or whatever else that will bring historical themes, people, culture, or events into popular culture. Something that resonates with normal people and not just autists on 4chan.

Why the fuck would you spoil a perfectly good historical subject like that?
>A spy thriller set during the Napoleonic/French Revolutionary Wars
You get sent back in time. The Roman emperor's chariot goes past and the emperor is one of those crazy ones who kills people for the bants.
Luckily his smartest advisers are with him. They are the smartest Romans alive. If you impress them then they'll tell the emperor to spare you. You have 60 seconds to impress them with your 2000 year advantage but they have to find it believable. What do?
Normal mode: You speak Latin and have a stick to write in the sand.
Hard mode: You can't speak Latin and you have a stick to write in the sand.
Extreme Hard Mode: You can't speak Latin and have nothing to write with.
Draw may waifu in the sand.
The will be so awestruck that I will be given a Triumphal return to Rome.

Draw a map of the Mediterranean (a very basic but recognizable design that they could understand it to be).
Using Christianity as an example, whether or not it's actually happened yet, use symbols to display the spread of a cultural ideal throughout the Empire, complemented by charts to show the conflict between the different levels of Roman society and how it contributes to said idea's spread.
How familiar were the Romans with algebra?

How do we promote an understanding of the humanities among laypeople?
Do pop historians help?
>>797576
We can't. The modern society is one of simplicity and clarity. No one can focus on anything for too long because they'd rather be enjoying other pleasures, and even then they'll go off again soon.
Not only do pop historians not help, but that's why they exist. They simplify history to such an extent that it's easy and clear to understand without any controversy or intrusion necessary, so the people can get the satisfaction of believing they've learned something without actually putting in the effort for it.
>>797683
This. All pop historians do is give uneducated people a smug sense of knowing the "real" history behind something, and it's always based on gross oversimplification. See: Jared Diamond and John Green.
>>797767
Jared Diamond is certainly a pop historian, but his work would be fine, though admittedly pretty low-tier, for the academic environment had the pop histories not jumped on his work simply because he tried to explain as many things as possible throughout history, meaning you only had to read one guy and feel like you know everything you need to.
Why did socialism never catch on in the American South? The main reason that the South got completely fucked over before, during, and long after the war with the North was that the Southern agricultural, individualist economy couldn't compete with the production levels of the Northern industrial, capitalist economy. So why is it that Southerners historically seem to be much more geared towards capitalism historically, even though it was the system that ended up rendering their way of life outdated and degraded?
Precisely because they pretty much had to get dragged kicking and screaming into capitalism. They had to adjust to that before anything, let alone go Red.
