Do you think interstellar colonists in the future are going to call the stars and the planets by the names that we've given them? Recently the IAU has been naming stars and exoplants and I'm curious if the colonists of 47 Ursae Majoris in the 26th century are going to call the star "Chalawan" and the planets "Taphao Thong" and "Taphao Kaew"
What do you think?
>>1689084
Almost all the stars we know of just have catalogue numbers. The very small number with actual names will probably keep their names
>>1689089
The ones with ancient names like Sirius or Procyon, sure, but what about the new names related to mythologies and civilizations that the colonists couldn't give a fuck about?
>>1689100
>The ones with ancient names like Sirius or Procyon
Thats all of them

>Never yet has there been an overman. Naked I saw both the greatest and the smallest man: they are still all-too-similar to each other. Verily, even the greatest I found all-too-human.
you obviously haven't read any nietzsche so idk why i'm replying to this
You're both in over your heads.
>>1688925
just because i'm bad at expressing myself doesn't mean i'm wrong
Overman concept is simple, it's the above-human, improved-human, better-human, or human-to-come
I cringe when:
>People think Neitzsche thought himself the Superman
>People think Neitzsche saw any particular race of humans as the Superman
It's about improving the human and thus producing a creature that is better, like breeding different improved species of dogs.

Why is this so controversial? Are Australians all communists or something?
Unfortunately yes
>Elements of the Australian military and secret service go behind the Governments back and work with the US to overthow Allende.
>Whitlam finds out.
>Threatens the US he will shut down Pine Gap for the treasonous actions of elements of Australians defence/intelligence community.
>US get a CIA shill into position of Governor general.
>CIA shill works with the Liberals to block supply.
>They kick out what was a very popular Government that was threatening a more neutral stance because of the actions of elements of Australias defence community who have more loyalty to the United States than Australia.

If he was so popular and wronged, why didn't he win the election?
Why is it the Catholics got so paranoid about laity reading the Bible, whereas the Orthodox continued to translate it any urge readership?
>We prohibit also that the laity be permitted to have the books of the Old or New Testament; we most strictly forbid their having any translation of these books.
The Church Council of Toulouse 1229
>No one may possess the books of the Old and New Testaments, and if anyone possesses them he must turn them over to the local bishop within eight days, so that they may be burned.
The Church Council of Tarragona 1234 AD
I know some Catholics feel like there was good cause for this, and that people reading the Bible is what started the Reformation. I have a different theory, though: I think banning the Bible is what made people think the RCC wasn't following it and had something to hide, and that's why you had all these Protestant interpretations of Scripture.
It also feels like the almost kitsch vibe of the Catholic Church today is a reaction to how much the RCC has screwed up and done awful things in the past, and now they are trying to appear friendly and kitsch at all costs, and it comes off as, well, fake.

>Bible is translated to fucking death from hebrew/aramaic to greek to latin.
>A lot of the original message couldve been twisted via lost in translation.
>Lay plebs want to translate it in their shitty languages.
>Original message gets lost further.
Quran logic basically.
>>1688563
The Greek and Latin translations were both done out of the Hebrew. The New Testament was originally in Greek, and the RCC didn't even read it in that, they translated it into Latin. Translating it from Greek into another tongue wouldn't distort it anymore than translating it into Latin.
>>1688563
They translated it directly from the original languages
Why did it take until 1492 for a European to decide to just sail into the ocean and see what's out there? And then everyone else followed Columbus' example and Europeans had almost all of the world's coastlines mapped a few decades later. But Europe had ships capable of crossing the ocean before 1492, so why didn't anyone before Columbus just decide to go see what's out there?

>Vikings aren't European
Vikings did it first
Why is pagan philosophy called "philosophy", but Christian philosophy (except for Kierkegaard) is almost always "theology" instead of philosophy?
For instance, why is it that when Aristotle makes the Unmoved Mover argument, it's called "philosophy", but when Aquinas makes the same argument, it's called "theology"?
"Theology" used to strictly be a mystical term that meant direct experience of the divine, like the art of prayer and all that. Now it's just used as an umbrella term for all Abrahamic philosophy. A fine distinction that started during the Age of Reason, I guess to cut Abrahamic religion out of the philosophical dialogue.
>>1688508
Medieval European authors are considered part of the history of philosophy even if they didn't classify their own writings as philosophical.
>A fine distinction that started during the Age of Reason
The distinction between philosophy and theology actually emerged with the rise of universities in the 11th and 12th centuries. Philosophy was taught as part of the faculty of arts while theology had its own faculty.
>>1688508
Pagan philosophy = mythology
>>1688508
Because the nature of the philosophies between the two time periods are different. The points of view as well as the purpose of thought are different.
Pre-Christian philosophy questions the nature of man and the world without religious introspection.
Post-Christian/Medieval philosophy, like Aquinas for example, is very much based on the idea that Christian belief is a fact and the philosophy is thus centered on humans and the world in the context of Christian truths. That's theological.
Still, as >>1688587 pointed out, they are considered part of the history of philosophy.

Tell me why this guy is evil
>evil
Do I need to say it?
Anyway, he's controversial because of shit like encomienda and his generally brutal treatment of natives. A lot of people grew up in school with him just being "that guy who discovered america" and then they find out all the cuntish things he did and it surprises them, so they feel a bit deceived.
>A recently discovered report by Bobadilla alleges that Columbus regularly used torture and mutilation to govern Hispaniola. The 48-page report, found in 2006 in the state archive in the Spanish city of Valladolid, contains testimonies from 23 people, including both enemies and supporters of Columbus, about the treatment of colonial subjects by Columbus and his brothers during his seven-year rule.[79]
>According to the report, Columbus once punished a man found guilty of stealing corn by having his ears and nose cut off and then selling him into slavery. Testimony recorded in the report claims that Columbus congratulated his brother Bartolomé on "defending the family" when the latter ordered a woman paraded naked through the streets and then had her tongue cut out for suggesting that Columbus was of lowly birth.[79] The document also describes how Columbus put down native unrest and revolt; he first ordered a brutal crackdown in which many natives were killed and then paraded their dismembered bodies through the streets in an attempt to discourage further rebellion.[80] "Columbus's government was characterised by a form of tyranny," Consuelo Varela, a Spanish historian who has seen the document, told journalists.[79] "Even those who loved him [Columbus] had to admit the atrocities that had taken place."[79]
He was a savage tyrant even by medieval spanish standards. Bartolomé de las Casas was so horrified by the treatment of the natives in Hispaniola by Columbus son that he became a friar.
The world has grown complacent once again. How do we orchestrate another great war to shake it out of its apathy?

Fun fact the first romans was ruled by kings who was black. Tarquinius superbus the last black king of rome was overthrown by the whiteys who ruled rome for a couple of centuries. Until sulla the great black general overthrew the whiteys and exterminated them in the social war. Now blacks was running rome again and a whitey wasnt seen in the region again until it was sacked by alaric and the whiteys eventually killed or sent the black romans to africa. Julius caesar was black
