Did the ancient Israelites take the bible literally?
They did whatever the rabbis told them to do.
>>1682678
To be honest, most ancient Israelites probably couldn't read. The Hebrew word-root קרא
simultaneously means "read" as well as "call" or "shout". The ancient Israelite conception of reading seems to be less "sitting at home with a book" and more "reading to other people".
So probably not. They probably didn't even really have a conception of "the Bible", just a plethora of holy teachings from their holy men, which are drawn from a body of holy books, some of which were generally agreed upon, some of which weren't. Much later, you get the enormous arguments over proper canon you see in the Gemara, but I doubt that those kinds of debates started then.

The ones who take the bible most literally are actually protestants
The more you strive from the original teachings the more literal you take the bible basically
Best history on Germanic tribes, ancient Germanic peoples, especially in and around the region that became modern Germancy (but anything is fine).
I'm look more for overview/survey works with a broad scope, but narrow works dedicated to a single people are welcome.
PS if anyone has insight into the southern part of the region that was Germania, where people have tanner skin, brown hair, etc. I'm very interested in that.

>Germania by Tacitus
>The Barbarians Speak by Peter Wells
>The Roman Empire and Its Germanic Peoples by Herwig Wolfram
>Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum by Adam of Bremen
>Ecclesiastical History of the English People by Bede
I'm sure there's more, but obviously take Tacitus, Bede and Adam of Bremen with a pinch of salt, they are all unbelievably out there in some of their statements, and everything should be seen as suspect. Wells' book is a little dry and repetitive, but it makes a really interesting point of the interactions occurring on Imperial frontiers. Also his assessment of the archeological record is quite interesting. Wolfram's by far is the best book I've read on the subject
I would argue "no"

Are jews an ethnic group or a religious group?
>>1682575
Both. There are secular Jews who still identify as Jewish even though they are physically European.
Both. Even as a religion, Judaism has always been mostly ethnicity-based. Centuries of living among other cultures and maintaining that identity also helped to solidify that ethnic identity.

shouldn't ethnic jews be much darker?

Does postmodernity seek to create a single homogenised society?
From what I've read it seems to. It asks us to think globally and act locally - to consider issues personal to us, and abandon big narratives such as religion and political ideals because they have no single end point. No rational conclusion. Postmodernism seems to ask us to be pragmatic - to focus on making our realities more comfortable in an ever changing world which will not adhere to laws or ideals.
If it does seem to point towards a homogenised society - doesn't that leave us open to intervention by idealists? Such as violent religious intervention?
Come on, I know some of you out there have studied this stuff.
>I know some of you out there have studied this stuff.
Or perhaps not

I don't know enough about postmodernism but if it's anything close to modernism it can fuck off.

I remember the cold war campaign giving USA an OP mission that let them take over China and cockblock the USSR from most of Asia.

Ah yes, good times. But nothing beats nuking the USA to oblivion and capturing France as the USSR to knock NATO out of the game and prompt a desperate peace deal from the Americans

Today I met with my undergraduate advisor to discuss my major, or lackthereof. I still haven't declared anything. For the past two and a half years I've taken six courses per semester across a wide variety of fields. Mathematics, thermodynamics, film analysis, fiction writing, philosophy, middle eastern history, native american history, linguistics, german language, cognitive psychology. Whatever seemed interesting I'd take it. I aced every class that I didn't drop, always for being too boring.
My professor said, "What the hell do you want to do, though?"
I said, "I don't know. Go to the woods. Write stories and paint. I like animals. Maybe I'll adopt a raccoon or something."
"But realistically," he said, "What do you see yourself doing five years from now?"
"I don't know. Why would I care about that? If there were something I wanted to do five years from now, why don't I just start doing it now?"
"That's exactly my point. You need to find something to focus on, and start focusing on it now. With a job market like this, you need at least a year's worth of internship to get hired at any decent company."
"I refuse to work for any company."
"What?"
"I will not work any job where a manager dictates what I may do and how I may do it, and I refuse to take any managerial position. I work alone, on my own terms, at my own pace."
"The real world doesn't work like that."
"Fine. I have no interest in the real world anyways. I think I'll go into the woods after all."
Dumb spook could barely even speak. Not that I would have cared what he had to say. I was already writing my manuscript in my head while filling out the forms to drop out of that spookhouse.
What was his endgame?
To become a God, and he did.

To mix the folklore of the rural mountainous peoples with communist ideology, all centered around himself as the godhead backed by the Soviets. He was closer to a Jim Jones than a Lenin, and he liked it that way.

Why did the u.s. immediatly side with britain in ww2? Why was it so late to the battles?
The US intervened because Japan and German declared war on them.
Before that, the prevailing sentiment is that the Americans should just stay out of European troubles.
It wasnt ready for war and would get btfo lime italy.
Now its always ready for total war due to M.I.C., which keeps all military factories on life support.

They ignored german requests for sanctions against britain and froze japanese assets. They were begging for entry.
Do you people only read about history for fun or the vast majority of this board are history/humanities students? I'm studying STEM but I really enjoy history for some reason. I believe it is because after a while you get that people were always the same and if given the chance they would procrastinate like we do today. It is a very common idea today that we should aim to be a superman and we should feel guilt for wasting time, at least it's common between my peers. Also people in the past had problems and poor conditions of living, like we have today. So history can make you feel less alone in the world and prepare you for the worst (losing parents, losing job, diseases).
Sadly I have very little time for reading and I would like to write a bit more because I feel it is good for keeping information. Do you feel like reading is enough or writing is necessary? do you try to reenact history for better understanding?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a34dP9NCwjw
I don't have costumes or money to buy old things, nor I live next to nature to go camping or hunting so I'm limited to trying old recipes from his channel. To keep my reenacting cheap I've been playing with fasting too. Any other (cheap) ideas to help learning and take the most from my readings? Currently I'm at feudal Europe (900-1400) and next year I'll learn about ancient Egypt or ancient Africa.

I read for fun, and for research purposes for my comics (mesoamerica related). I'm gonna learn how to sow though, so I can start making actual costumes and get in touch with some weavers in Mexico. I do drawing reconstructions of clothing, but I want to move to making them irl too.

Did Catharism arise independently, or was it born from contact with Bogomilism, which itself was influenced by Paulicianism, which in turn was born from a mixture of Marcionism/Manichean thought and even some other Gnostic schools?

The theory that european dualist religions are related to the iranian / manichean basin have pretty much been debunked.

Are there any PhDs and postdocs on this board? If so, I have some questions:
>Is it worth embarking on a PhD?
>Is it as isolated, stressful and depressing an experience as it's made out to be?
>Have you taught, and if you have, how was it?
>Have you published?
>Current candidates: will you stay in academia? Postdocs: are you still in academia?

Not OP, but I had a Psych professor who's PhD group disbanded after he'd completed, but before he presented his thesis.
The printed copies he had made are sitting collecting dust and he's not even thinking about trying again for a few years as it'd mean he'd have to rewrite at least half his work to present it to another group.
Shit sounds sucky. Personally, I think I'm happy with my welding job. Benefits, good pay, union + OSHA compliance works to my benefit I guess.
Depends on how much you want it, but it'll probably suck pretty bad.
