Why was Mithraism so popular among Roman legionnaires specifically?
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Hard to say, since we don't actually know what Mithraism was.
>>
>>1929404
It was a warrior religion, by killing you reenacted the killing of the Bull by Mithra, basically Mithraists saw themselves as gods fighting the darkness as well as initiates, it must have been pretty attractive for warriors who fighted ceaselessly.

We know it; we have hymns, a lot of stone inscriptions, as well as description from the christians.

>We know it; we have hymns, a lot of stone inscriptions, as well as description from the christians.
That doesn't really give us the substance, especially since, presumably, the Christians writing about it weren't initiates.

What the fuck were their problems?

Why were there no crippling diseases transferred from the New World to the Old World colonists?

Why were all the worst diseases found in the Old World and absent in the New?
24 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Syphilis
>>
>>1929370
Close proximity to domesticated animals and large populations led to a huge amount of disease developing
>>
There were some bad diseases that got transferred over to the Old World, but the reason the Old World wasn't as horribly impacted was because people living there had stronger immune systems due to how interconnected they were. Through extensive land and sea traderoutes, China, Western Europe, and everywhere in between had essentially been connected on a microbial level since the days of the old Silk Road. The higher average population density of the Old World also created easier breeding grounds for bacteria, and thus required strong immune systems for any of the people who survived.

Do any of my ranger bros know how to make a bow?

Like if you travelled back in time hundreds of years ago, where would you begin to make a bow as close to modern as possible?

I've always wondered about this. I figure that bows would be the only rational go-to weapon that any time-traveling castaway would try to make.

What do people mean by meaning (in life)?

I see this shit alot, but I don't get it.

Is it the same thing as purpose? I thought any philosophical view gives you a purpose, either to fuck, be at peace, try to find the truths of the world etc. etc.

Maybe I'm retarded but please try to explain it to me.

When you're born, you're told you're put on here for a specific reason, whether it be out of destiny, because the deity you love and fear decided to, because it was your calling, or because you had a duty to love your fellow man, take over the world, etc. and as you grow, you're slowly stripped of your illusions and your beliefs begin to be taken away from you.

My interpretation is that meaning is purpose. Think of the phrase,
>what is the meaning of this?

A car has meaning. We gave it meaning. A car's meaning is to transport something from point A to point B. What's our meaning? What's our purpose? WHY were we born? To do WHAT?

So they can be used interchangeably?

According to this chart (please don't laugh) meaning is associated with religion and politics, so what makes those things have meaning as oppose to Buddhism and absurdism?
>>
>>1929230
My question really is what is the difference between the two words since they obviously can't be used completely interchangeably

He was Great because he build up the country that defeated the Teutonic Order and pretty much subjugated Ruthenians.
It was his economic genius that helped Poland rebuild and wage war against Teutons.

He probably had a lot of bastard children, too bad the Piast line ended.

It seems like such a trashy thing to do. Bad health, no will power, smell terrible. But here is the Tsar of Russia lighting up another stick of tobacco for those sweet, sweet dopamines.

chemical addiction =/= simple enjoyment or psychological addiction, nicofag.

That's completely natural.

It's addiction onset by specific chemicals like nicotinoids, amphetimines, opioids that I'm talking about.

However in our modern world, antisocial behaviour and manipulative behaviour is scorned and looked down upon.

Hi people of /His/. I just started reading the Constitution of my Country and I found this article. Can human dignity and general interest coexist? Isn't avoidable that general interest will in any moment obliterate some human dignity?

>>
>>1928837
Does your Constitution also have in it articles that definitely suspend the exercise of some rights for the general interest, like mine does? As in natural cataclysm cases or martial law? I'm a law student
>>
>>1928837
Remember, not suspend the rights themselves, but only the exercise those rights and freedoms

I'm just starting out with Lingvist to learn French (for basic neuroplasticity, additional future potential lines of communication, being able to read more patrician books, etc.), but I can't get over how absolutely dumb the pronunciations are. How does anyone understand anything in that language when half the words are pronounced the same and half the letters in a word aren't pronounced at all?

Maybe if I understood the historical precedent for how their language works, I'd be better equipped to learn it.

French pronunciation is way more logic than the english one. If you are struggeling with french pronunciation, try to listen to a lot of french native speakers. Watch french movies, radio programs and youtube channels. A historical approach won't help you here.
>>
>>1928756
Is it closer to 'standard black english' then, where words don't necessarily need to be conjugated? Because there've been a ton of verbs already that are identical-sounding no matter the conjugation.
>>
>>1928733
French is the biggest muh heritage language ever. Half the letters are just there because it was written like that in mommy Latin. That being said, pronunciation is very regular and I cant think of any exceptions. As for the verbs, context is everything.

What were the U.S justifications for the Spanish American war? I've heard differing opinions but I was taught in school that the Spanish were oppressing the Cubans, and that the U.S went to "liberate" them. Is this true? Were there other reasons?

Hey /his/, I'm doing a presentation on Voltaire for school and I want some good info about him. Are there any cool Voltaire-themed activities or other things to put in the presentation?

I've already done a mini-biography of his life and his work, but I have nothing too attention-grabbing. Is it possible to make this thing interesting or is it doomed to be just another presentation about some French guy who didn't like the church?
