My hard drive stopped reading/writing. It spins up and detects, but if I try to access any files it just hangs forever. Disk activity goes to 100% but read/write is 0kbps. Disk check and such just hang and never return anything.

How fucked am I?

if not, try to run a SMART test from BIOS. Sounds like your HDD is fucked though, unfortunately.

sounds like the major announcements are
>OS X => macOS
>Siri SDK
???

so i'm not excited. i really hope they announce hardware, but it doesn't seem likely. still, the rumors around hardware are pretty cool-sounding. USB type C in the MBP, for one thing. and monitors with integrated graphics cards for another (if you think about a dedicated card for just one monitor, you might be able to scale down the needs quite a bit, so we're hardly talking about adding a GTX 970 into every monitor/price tag).

i figured out how to drive 4k monitors for my laptop on my own, though, so i'm not that invested in a "retina desktop monitor" solution. it would just be nice to see something reasonably forward-thinking, especially since we have absolutely nothing on the horizon to actually push 5k or 8k graphics at 120Hz (maybe compressed, but certainly nothing uncompressed). integrated graphics cards might, conceivably, open the door to the solution to that problem.

>i really hope they announce hardware,
didn't they stop doing that a few years ago?

I don't give a flying fuck about another iphone but I really want to see external gpu support that isn't limited to apple meme displays

I want them to update the mac pro too but I don't have high hopes considering apple's track record of neglecting anything but their phones - maybe now that iphone sales are slowing they'll remember that they still make computers

Will we get proper bionic eyes in the next 30 years? Id settle for 720p 30 fps

>I'd settle for 720p 30fps
if you were only able to register changes in the visual landscape that happened for 1/30th of a second or longer, you'd be functionally disabled.

The same is arguably true of whatever the closest analog for "720p resolution" would be of eyesight acuity.

Unless you have literally several genetic disorders, your eyesight is currently leaps and bounds ahead of digital imaging in basically every dimension.
>>
>>54991753
however, In the land of the blind the guy with 720p 30fps eyesight IS king.
>>
>>54991703
There was an experiment with a blind guy like a year ago and while he could actually see with it, it was like 16x16 in a few shades of grey and they had to take it out again after a few days.

So.. maybe.

Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

It's that time of month again, pacaur refuses to update packages:

What does the error "no results found for dependencies)" mean? It just throws that and exits.
I assume it's something related to ZFS packages, but I don't want to reinstall them manually every time kernel updates. Any way to prevent that?

· The "stable" distribution contains the latest officially released distribution of Debian.

The current "stable" distribution of Debian is version 8, codenamed jessie.

· The "testing" distribution contains packages that haven't been accepted into a "stable" release yet, but they are in the queue for that. The main advantage of using this distribution is that it has more recent versions of software.

The current "testing" distribution is stretch.

· The "unstable" distribution is where active development of Debian occurs. Generally, this distribution is run by developers and those who like to live on the edge.

The "unstable" distribution is always called sid.
>>
I'm curious, for a first distro, could anyone here sell Ubuntu (even without Unity) over Debian Testing? Heck, what even are the reasons to not use Debian Testing?

I'm thinking of getting a 480 and then upgrading to a 490 when it comes out. Or if the 490 fails, potentially a 1080 when prices drop
