A lot of the reviews I'm reading seem to really pan (once again!) AMD's reference cooler provided by the RX 480, generally they seem content enough with performance but thermal throttling seems to be a constant issue that pretty much torpedos OCing on reference boards.
My question is this; WHY? Why, when AMD must have had numerous engineers doing QA/QC would they equip the cards that their flagship series was going to be judged on with garbage coolers that were loud, inefficient, and din't allow OC headroom? It makes no sense, at the least why don't they do a limited run of RX 480's with beefy all copper 3rd party coolers for evaluation?

What is everyone complaining about again? To get this kind of performance for $230 is a fucking BARGAIN.
This is exactly what I was hoping the card would deliver.
And keep in mind we're dealing with a reference card here that will only get better with aftermarket brands, driver optimization and upcoming DX12 games.
As far as I'm concerned AMD delivered fully with this card, it has now surpassed everything else as THE card to buy in the midrange sector.

The performance summary:
1- Tom's put this card as below the GTX 970 and R9 390, but not by much.
2- TechPowerUp and Anadtech and PC Perspective and Hexus and HardwareCanucks and KitGuru put the card at slightly above the GTX 970.
3- LegitReviews and GamerNexus and HardOCP puts the card on par with the GTX 970.
The details:
1- All reviews mention that the cards does considerably better on DX12, where it can beat the GTX 980, never mind the 970.
2- The reviews unanimously praise the card's power consumption
3- Most lament the temps of the reference cooler.
4- Most of the reviews note that the reference cooler does well on the noise, which is something to note, considering the horrible reference coolers of AMD's 290/290X cards.
5- Overclocking results are mixed, with some reviewers getting up to 10% OC, and some getting barely 2%.
Overall:
I would say this was a good launch for AMD. The card is (on average) is very slightly above the GTX 970/R9 390, and cheaper. Once non-reference versions are out, with better temps, this should be a great purchase.
