Does anyone have experience with the Echo or Echo Dot?

I am looking at getting my mother a christmas present and she has expressed an interest in one of these. She is a teacher and wants to use it in her classroom. She's pretty big on writing tech grants and gets a lot of them... she had some of the earliest activ boards, and her class has ipads for everyone, and stuff like that. She'll try most any new technology that comes along, as well.

She hopes that she can set timers by voice command, ask simple questions (temperature, weather, ball game scores), and use it for assisted reading with her weaker students with ebooks.

Is there a way to lock voice activation at range so she can power it off remotely, and kids won't wake it up during testing or quiet periods?

Does it activate among a wide range of voices? As in, would kids be able to make queries of it? She seems to think it would be nice for random trivia questions and things like that.

Is it reasonably durable? This is for an elementary school, I have every expectation some tardlet would knock it off a shelf or something.

Can it be networked to multiple speakers? Her room has surround sound speakers throughout.

Is there an advantage to buying the larger unit if you already have speakers you can dedicate to it?

Is the microphone good enough to pick up in a reasonably noisy classroom?

Thanks for any input you might have.

I honestly don't know how well it would work in an educational setting. Buy one and try it out. Worse that can happen is that your mom uses it at her house.
>>
Google Home with chromecast audio allows you to group seperate speakers together and sync them.

should I bother learning cobol? is it simply an ancient relic of decades past that happens to still be in use today (and will eventually get phased out) or is there still a legitimate reason to know the language?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>57760977
Supposedly there are ancient banking systems running on it, and if you know it maintaining those pays well, but I wouldn't know for sure.
>>
>>57762798
This is what I have heard, but I get a surprising amount of mixed messages about it
people saying it'll be phased out with time and others saying it'll be a veritable utopia of opportunity because companies won't want to migrate because the systems work so well and everyone who knows cobol is rather old on average

I realized offline backups are "pointless" if some nigga stole them or my home burn so I need to store one in the "cloud" too

Is acronis encryption safe enough or should I use something else?

I could just create 1TB TC volume and store the backup inside but its a fucking bother, if acronis can't be trusted, any backup software with safe encryption?

>>
>>57760944
Those are pretty farfetched senarios. Home burning is unlikely and "some nigga" isn't going to steal your external hard drive.

Duplicity and Duplicati are solutions you might be interested in for backuping up to AWS and the like. It encrypts before upload so the cloud providers cant read your data. Expect to pay like $20 a month i'd expect.
>>
>>57760944
It's safe enough.
>>
It's not the ``cloud''.
We call them offsite backups. ``da cloud'' is one of those options.

Picture this: You got all your hard drives. You put them in the safe deposit box at the bank. You've got off-site storage. Great. It lasts about 5 years because the magnetism wears off over time.

Businesses use stuff like Amazon Glacier. Big businesses roll their own in-house version of the same thing.

looking for an external SSD / hard drive to store all my music, movies, media, etc...

would like it to be always connected to my computer, so basically always on

what would /g/ recommend for an all-day on external drive (SSD or otherwise)?

>pic related was what i was looking into, don't care if it's portable.. it's just going to stay on my desk all day

Go for an internal then, retard.
>>
>this many bumps

welcome to /g/ friend!
this should have gone on /sqt/, and this is a slower board

anyways, i know this is going to be vague as hell, but buy literally any 1tb external hdd

i know some brands are better than others and etc, but just about anything from any manufacturer will give you at least 3 years of worry free use. i wouldn't buy an external ssd though, i don't know if it would be able to handle that many reads/writes.

if you go with the ssd and you are just going to write onto it and fill it over time, i'd say do that for the silence and speed.
if you are going to be constantly deleting and rewriting, go with an external hdd

>>57760764
You could get any 2.5" and a USB to sata adapter/enclosure, or an m.2. sata SSD and a m.2. to USB enclosure.

They are moving away from the mainstream. They are going to milk thier users to death for as long as they can before they try and innovate again. They have done this before and while in the short term it works in the long term it's not great for business.
>>
They should. Steve might have been an asshole with an ego the size of Russia, but he saw shit that other people didnt. Tim "i love dongles so everybody must love them too" Cook has no idea at all what to do.
>>
>>57760388
No, they'll put up a struggle and kick the whole way down. In the end they'll be another Blackberry. Normies are livid over the headphone jack and dongle thing. A family member of mine who is a macfag had a bitch fit over "slide to unlock" missing in iOS 10. It's a shame really. I'm posting this from a 10 year old Mac. Apple used to be so good.
