hello William Tavares
>As an advisor, I've found that one of the highest-leverage activities that I do with my students is guiding them through the intricacies of command-line bullshittery. There is simply no substitute for sitting down with them one-on-one on their laptop and walking them through all of the arcane commands to type, what they each mean, and how to interpret the bullshit output that's barfed out to the drab terminal. (Senior professors usually have postdocs, research scientists, or older students train the new students. But I just started this job, so it's only me right now!)
>Throughout this entire ordeal where I'm uttering ridiculous epithets like “git pipe fork pipe stdout pipe stderr apt-get revert rollback pipe pipe grep pipe to less make install redirect rm rm ls ls -l ls tar -zxvf rm rm rm ssh mv ssh curl wget pip,” I keep reassuring my students thatthis bullshit is not intellectually interesting in any way ... it's all just a necessary upfront tax required to enable them to do the actual interesting research.I've engaged in so much command-line bullshittery over the years that I can confidently assert how uninteresting it all is. It's simply an obstacle to overcome before one can get real work done.
B-b-but /g/ told me that the command line was an intellectual activity!!!1

CLI is the best part of *nix. At least if you're using bash.
So? If you're too retarded to use a CLI why not make a GUI wrapper for whatever programs you use? Quit your bitching and do something productive.
Command line is not an intellectual activity at all. It's actually SIMPLER to use than graphical user interfaces in many areas. It's just that to anyone who hasn't used it, it seems like wizardry.
is anyone here Comptia A+ certified? how hard is the exam?
Pretty easy.
Easy
>>57757189
It's not hard at all but it does require you to read the course material
Something like 50% of the class failed the first exam attempt though.
the absolute madman

>have had 3 contracts at $600 per one
>all baby boomers age 60+
>act like I'm a freaking wizard genius
>they don't know how easy it really is
>wondering if I should keep going or not
>wondering how many people are able to make their own websites now
Should I continue putting time and effort into getting web design jobs? I've been trying to figure out if the average person knows how to make their own website or not. So far, I've seen that many Millenials know how to make their own, but the age 32+ demographic do not know how.
Some millennials have also told me that they have no idea how to make a website. How many people do you think know how to make their own websites?
>>57756970
well I mean if you have money coming in from it for little real work then I don't see why you wouldn't continue. especially since it's the kind of thing that's easy to do as a sideline.
And yes, most people of all age groups are clueless about it. Most people not only don't want to learn things but actively avoid doing so, and Windows, Mac, and commercial software all tries very hard to cater to that mindset.
Its easy for people who poked around with tech stuff as a hobby in their youth. Since even if they don't know how to set up an http server, for instance, they know what an http server is, they know what they would search for to learn how to set one up, and they find the process at least somewhat interesting, instead of being a vile, difficult chore between where they are now and the goal of having a website.
>>57757138
not OP but $1800 for two months is not very good money. Sideline I get, but I'm pretty sure OP wants to know how to make this a real business.
Also I want to know about this too. With the proliferation of things like Square Space or any of the other ones out there, what contracts can a one man shop really get and how? I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have been successful doing this in the last 2ish years
As long as you have clients and can stay profitable, I don't see why you should stop.
I've been thinking of starting a similar service, but I don't really know where to begin or find clients.
>successfully removed malware all by myself
what are your greatest tech feats /g/?
I installed Gentoo. I suggest you do it as well.
>successfully removed malware all by myself
No you didn't.
My first laptop. Some cheap 15 pounds Asus. Paid for it all by myself and kept it functional for over 7 years via various nigger rig repairs. Final stage included screen from another laptop that didn't fit the lid and had to be held in place via duct tape and powering CPU fan from USB - yes that means having cable connected to USB port leading back inside the body. The "tan" of the first degree burn it gave me is visible even today.
isn't this that memepad you keep talking about

>The overclocker Nam Dae Won has Delidded an AMD AM4 CPU, revealing that the CPU uses solder or liquid metal as its thermal interface material.
Over the past few years deliding CPUs has been popular amongst overclockers, removing the IHS (integrated heat spreader) improve heat transfer between the CPU and your chosen cooling solution. This method has been particularly popular on Intel's LGA 115X series CPUs, which use thermal paste to connect their CPUs to the IHS instead of solder or other more thermally conductive materials.
It looks like AMD's AM4 CPUs will be using a high-quality thermal interface material, which means that mainstream users will likely see no benefit from de-lidding their CPUs.

Enjoy your shit TIM, intelfags!
why wasnt this always standard practice
I remember using a credit card and a small flathead screwdriver to de-lid my K6-2 back in the 90s
>>57756676
cheaper to glue on a slab of iron with some thermal paste than soldering it
also pretty hilarious intel doesnt do this on $500-1500 cpus
